Crime and Punishment.

It was half-past seven by the time he entered the building where Alena Ivanovna lived. His heart was beating rapidly as he climbed the stairs, listening for any unusual sound. At last he reached the moneylender’s door. He touched the hatchet took a deep breath and rang the bell. The door was opened a little and Raskolnikoff pushed past the landlady and entered the room without permission.

The old woman followed and recognized him when she saw him in the light. “What do you want now? What’s you name again?

“Pardon me, Alena Ivanovna. You remember – I’m Rodion Raskolnikoff. I have something to pawn, a silver cigarette case, as I promised the other day. Please, have a look at it”.

Before taking the package, the moneylender inspected the young man. “Why are you so pale? Why are your hands shaking?”

“Fever”, replied Raskolnikoff shortly.”You’d be pale too if you had nothing to eat”.

The old woman accepted this explanation and took the package.”What a tight knot you’ve put in this string!” she complained, turning towards the light from the window.

With her back to him, Raskolnikoff opened his jacket and removed the hatchet.

“What’ this? A piece of wood?” cried Alena Ivanovna as she angrily turned to face him.

There was no time to lose. Raskolnikoff raised the hatchet with both hands and let it descend without force, almost mechanically, on the old woman’s head. With the faintest of cries, she fell in a heap to the floor, but still with the strength to raise her arms to the wound. Raskolnikoff with increased force, struck twice more with the hatchet until blood flowed freely from her head. He saw that her neck was broken and her skull crushed, and had no doubt that she was dead. The murderer, calm and businesslike, began searching the dead body. He found a thick piece of string– now wet with blood – around her neck, and attached to this a small purse full of money and two crosses, one made of cheap metal and the other of wood. He cut the string with his hatchet and, after finding the old woman’s keys in her pocket, went to the bedroom.

Under the old woman’s bed he found a large trunk and, inside it, all sorts of jewellery: watches, bracelets, chains, earrings. He was putting these things into his jacket pockets when he heard footsteps in the other room.

Raskolnikoff picked up the hatchet and pushed out of the bedroom. In the other room he saw Elizabeth standing beside her sister’s bloody body, frightened to make a sound. The murderer did not hesitate but ran at the woman and with one heavy blow split her skull in two. Elizabeth fell down dead. He stopped and looked round the tiny room. What am I doing? Am I going mad? I must get away from here at once!’ He passed the bodied and stepped outside. He walked into the street as slowly as he could and disappeared into the crowd.
