ХОД УРОКА
Teacher: Good morning! Sit down, please. How are today?
Teacher: I would like you to answer my questions:
- Is reading an important part of your life?
- What types of books do you know?
- What books do you prefer?
- Have you got any favourite books?
- Do you use any libraries?
- Do you find them helpful?
Teacher: Well, I see that you enjoy reading and today we’ll continue speaking about books. The main objectives of our lesson are:
- To practise using the vocabulary of books
- To practise giving opinions, agreeing and disagreeing
- To practise some elements of debate
Teacher: You know that the topic of our discussion is “Pleasure of reading” and we are going to discuss an interesting text about a little girl who was fond of reading. Before we start doing it let us train some sounds and words, I’ll pronounce them and you’ll repeat after me:
- Fat, rat, chat, a chatterbox. My sister is a real chatterbox.
- Buy, lie, library, a librarian, a good librarian. She introduced herself to the librarian.
Teacher: Now let’s discuss the text. Open your books (Ex.48
p.166) What is the title of the text?
Pupils: “The reader of books”.
Teacher: Who is the author?
Pupils: Roald Dahl.
Teacher: By the way, it is the passage from the book called
“Matilda”, written by a famous British writer, known especially for his children’s
books and they are read by children all over the world.
What is this text about?
What can you tell me about the main characters of this text?
Are there any secondary characters?
Teacher: Well done. Now I’d like you to cope with some
exercises for me to see how well you know the text. Take these sheets of paper (there are
three tasks on them: true or false, answer the questions and explain why).
Well, you’ve just said that books changed Matilda’s life; she read a lot of books,
though her parents encouraged her to watching TV instead of reading books. Her father said
that she was getting spoilt only because she wanted him to buy her a book.
Do you think that watching TV is enough to be a well-educated and well-informed person?
Now it is spoken much about the fact that people read less than it was 5 or 10 years ago
and especially young generation don’t like reading and they prefer watching TV to
reading books. It’s a controversial issue. I think it’s time to start debating.
The motion of the debate is:
Books have been replaced by TV.
The pupils are divided into 2 teams: opposers and proposers and they give arguments for
and against the motion. They prepared the arguments at home. At the end of the debate one
speaker from both teams sums up for their sides.
At the end of the lesson the teacher sums up the results of the debate. For the pupils of
this group it was their first experience as far as debate was concerned. They tried to be
objective and persuasive though it was not easy for them. It’s difficult to explain and
support one’s position.
