Ann: I see. Next summer my cousins are going to visit Russia. What places of interest in Russia would you recommend seeing?

Student: I think they should visit the ancient towns of the Golden Ring. They will have the opportunity to see the traditional Russian towns, to learn the history of the country and buy some souvenirs. They will meet different people and learn about the customs and traditions of Russia.

If they go to Moscow they will have a chance to see Red Square with the Kremlin.

If they like Arts they should go to the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts which houses one of the world’s largest collections of ancient and classical works of art as well as oriental ones. The Tretyakov Picture Gallery is famous for its great collection of Russian artists’ works. They will see the masterpieces of famous artists such as Shishkin, Levitan, Brulov, Ivanov and others.

Ann: What do you usually do at the weekends in Russia?

Student: People in Russia usually spend weekends with their family or friends going out or staying at home. As for me I usually spend my weekends with my family. In winter we go skiing to the nearest park. In summer we go to the country and arrange a picnic there. Sometimes my relatives visit us and we have a family reunion.

As a rule I spend my weekends with my friends. We like to go out. We usually go for a walk in the park. Sometimes we go to the cinema. We like to spend a lot of time listening to music or watching video.

Dialogue 2

Student: Hello, Nora.

Nora: Hello!

Student: What are you doing here?

Nora: I am making a report for my Science class.

Student: I have two tickets to the theatre tonight and I want to invite you.

Nora: I’d love to but I’m really busy tonight as I have little time left. What is your report about?

Student: About some ecological problems: water pollution, air pollution, soil pollution, cutting down forests, nuclear pollution.

Nora: What ecological problems do people worry about in Russia?

Student: Air pollution is one of the most serious ecological problems in Russia especially in big cities such as Moscow. Factories and plants pollute the atmosphere too much. Besides fumes of cars in big cities pollute the air.

Nora: What should be done to solve this problem?

Student: People must try to use alternative sources of energy such as solar energy or wind energy. They should use public transport instead of their own cars. It will help to reduce the amount of cars in the streets. It is possible to build more railways as it’s one of the ecology-friendly means of transport. We should stop cutting down a lot of forests.

Nora: I see. The Scientific Society is arranging a lecture about rainforests. How about going with me?

Student: Sounds interesting. It will be useful for me.

Student: OK. I’ll be there at 5 tomorrow. Good bye.

I. Global problems

Вступление

People have lived on our planet for thousands of years and global problems have always existed.

Основная часть

Today there are a lot of global problems which can be divide into two categories

  • ecological problems
  • social and economical problems.

Among ecological problems water pollution, air pollution, soil pollution, deforestation (cutting down trees), nuclear pollution are the most important ones. The climate is changing and it can be one of the threats. People cut down a lot of forests especially tropical rainforests which are very important for our planet because there are homes for a great variety of plants, animals, birds and insects. They influence the planet’s climate. Deforestation leads to the change of the climate on the Earth and as a result people face with a problem of global warming. Global warming has killed off some species of animals and plants. They leave their habitats or become extinct. Besides global warming leads to the rise in temperature which affects animals and even people.

Another global problem deals with social issue. It’s poverty. Nowadays millions of people live in poverty. The worst situation is in Africa where people die of hunger because they have nothing to eat. They have less access to health services, education, housing. Poverty is caused by different factors including unemployment, overpopulation, wars, discrimination. So if we want to reduce poverty we must take some urgent measures.

Заключение

To sun up I would like to say that in the 21st century we have some global problems that must be solved completely. The humanity will live in the world without conflicts, wars, racism, terrorism, poverty.

Дополнительные вопросы

1. What global social problems do you know?

  • terrorism
  • wars
  • military conflicts
  • racism
  • hunger
  • malnutrition
  • the restriction of human rights

2. What is racism? Why is it a global problem?

Racism is a policy when people of different races and skin colour are humiliated or even killed. It’s a global problem because a lot of people have been being restricted in their rights and it has lasted for a long period of time.

3. In what way can we fight global problems?

Politicians and leaders of different countries must discuss these problems at the meeting and summits. They should come to an agreement and find peaceful ways of solving such problems. Cooperation is very important. Developed countries must help the poor ones. People must stop terrorism in all its forms. They should contribute for the world peace in any way.

II. About fashion

People have always followed fashion. They have always wanted to look smart and cool. So someone dresses to the latest fashion.

But people have various attitudes to fashion. Some of them are indifferent and do not care what to wear while others are very choosy what to wear and they spend a lot of money on clothes.

Fashion is not only clothes we wear. It’s also hair style, make-up, accessories such as shoes, handbags, gloves, belts, hats, scarves, glasses. But the way we dress depends o our taste, weather, season or an occasion.

On special occasions, for example a birthday party, going to the theatre or to a concert, we put on evening dresses, suits, shoes. For everyday clothes we usually choose trousers, jeans, skirts, blouses.

The most popular types of clothes for teenagers are jeans, shirts, T-shirts of different colours, jumpers for boys, and jeans, T-shirts, skirts, blouses, sweaters, cardigans for girls. It’s comfortable. It’s cool. It’s easy to buy. These clothes are not so expensive so you can afford to buy.

In conclusion I want to say that a lot of people do not choose clothes to the latest fashion. They wear what suits them what is comfortable for them. They usually buy clothes that are cheap.

  2. Do your parents give you pocket money for new clothes?
  3. Where do you usually buy clothes?

III. About pen-friends and email

Progress and modern technologies have made communication much easier and more convenient nowadays.

There are different ways of communication such as post, telephone and fax which are the old ones, and email, SMS and the Internet with its social networks.

As for me I prefer ...

Email has become one of the most convenient means of communication because you can write an email and send it to your friend or colleague and it will reach its addressee in a few seconds. You have the opportunity to get email within several minutes without going anywhere. It makes you work much easier because you can contact with your business partner during your working day in any time. If you have a lot friends who live in another city or country you always have a chance to speak to through email service.

To sum up I would like to say that with the help of modern means of communication such as the Internet or a mobile phone, people are able to make new friends, chat with them, discuss problems, learn more about the world around you, practice a foreign language.
