Objectives: to practice students’ reading comprehension skills (multiple matching, matching facts with the texts), to practice using vocabulary from the text, to practice speaking skills (comparing different festivals, choosing the most interesting one), to work with the memory map.
Resources used: OHP, computer, photos from the Internet, Student’s Book “Activate! B1” (pp40-41), video about cheese rolling from YouTube, memory map (1 copy for everybody), evaluation questions.
Procedure
I. Introduction
T: Good morning! How are you? I am going to start the lesson with the questions.
- What is a festival?
- What festivals do you have in the place you live?
- What other festivals do you know?
II. Warming-up
T: I’d like to draw your attention to the screen. <Приложение 1> You are going to watch a short video episode about one of the festivals. While watching try to answer the following questions:
- What is the aim of this festival?
- Where do you think it takes place?
- What feelings do you have while watching the video?
- What kind of people can do things like this?
- Would you like to take part in this festival?
- Do you have any similar festivals in your country?
Feedback.
III. Main part of the lesson
Skimming
T: Look at the screen once again. There you will see photos of the four festivals you are going to read about later. Describe these photos saying as much as possible.
Would you like to know more about these four festivals and check whether your predictions were right or wrong?
Open your textbooks at page 40 (Ex.2) and read the reports about festivals. While reading match the photos with the correct festival.
Feedback.
Reading for specific information
T: Read the reports once again and this time match the given statements in Ex.3 with the festivals and don’t forget to underline the key words which helped you to guess the right answer.
Feedback
Language questions (Vocabulary)
T: Now find the words in the texts which match these meanings (Ex.4, p.41). (If any students finish early, ask them to write sentences of their own using the words)
Feedback
Memory map
T: Let’s summarise what we’ve learnt about the festivals from your textbooks by completing the memory map <Приложение 4> Look at it, please. It looks like a spider. We’ll start doing this task together. You have to remember some words from the report about Glastonbury festival and write them on the handouts. Later on it will help you to prepare your retelling.
- Where does Glastonbury Festival take place? (England)
- Which words are related to people? (backstage crew, musicians, organizers, crowds)
- What types of entertainment are mentioned in the report? (circus acts, plays, body painting, craft workshops)
T: Now do the same work in pairs about the Night of Fire. And finally try to complete the memory map about West Coast Chocolate festival on your own.
Feedback
Time to talk
Group work
- Which festival would you prefer to go to? Why?
- What do you think makes a good festival?
Feedback
- Summing up

- Самым сложным для меня сегодня было ______________________________________
- Мне не понравилось _______________________________________________________
- Поставь отметку учителю от 1 до 10 баллов?
- Поставь себе отметку от 1 до 10 баллов?
- Homework:
Read the texts once again and finish the memory map (about International Dance Festival), learn new words (from Ex.4 on p.41)
T: If you don’t have any questions, the lesson is over.
