Professor: Good afternoon! Sit down, please! Would you please put all
your books back in your bags? Today will be a country study lesson.
Harry: Sorry, I’m late, Professor.
Professor: This lesson began ten minutes ago, so I think we’ll make it
ten points from you Harry, sit down. Today we’ll speak about Great Britain.
Harry: Excuse me, sir, we haven’t got as far as Britain yet, we are
still on…
Professor: Silence! Well, well, well. I never thought I’d meet a
seventh-year class who wouldn’t even know anything about this country.
Student: Please sir, I know.
Pupils: We all know, Professor.
Professor: Right then! Will you follow me? Let us see what you know about
Great Britain. So, what is the official name of the country?
Student: The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (the
UK) is the official name of the state situated on British Isles.
Professor: What parts do Great Britain and the United Kingdom include?
Student 2: In the whole the United Kingdom or the UK includes England,
Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Professor: What are the most important isles?
Student 3: In fact the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland consists of
the island of Great Britain, the north-eastern part of Ireland, and a great number of
small islands, such as the Orkney and the Shetland Islands in the north, the Hebrides in
the north-west, the Isle of Wight in the south, and many others.
Professor: Is it a large country?
Student 4: If you look at the map of Europe, you will see that Great
Britain is not large. The territory of the UK is 244 820 km^2, Its population is over
61,6 million people.
Professor: What are the British Isles washed by?
Student 5: The British Isles are washed by the Atlantic Ocean in the
north, by the Irish Sea in the west, and by the North Sea in the east; in the south they
are separated from the continent by the English Channel, or simply The Channel, as the
British often call it.
Professor: How can you define the climate of Great Britain?
Student 6: The Gulf Stream, a warm ocean current comes from the Gulf of
Mexico, crosses the Atlantic Ocean and warms the seas around the British coast. It
moderates the climate, giving it cool summers and mild winters. Britain’s climate is
mild and damp. It often rains, and fogs are quite frequent.
Professor: What do know about the flag of the United Kingdom?
Student 7: The flag of the United Kingdom is known as “The Union Jack.”
Professor: Excellent! Excellent! Well done, everyone! Five points for every person!

1 scene.
People: Long live the King! Long live Edward, King of England!
(шум)
Tom: What is the matter? Find out what is happening.
Dage: Your majesty, the crowd is following a woman and her little girl to
execution for some crime.
Tom: Death-for these unhappy people? Bring them here!
2 scene.
Tom: What have they done?
Lord 1: Your majesty, they have sold themselves to the devil-that is
their crime.
Tom: Where was this done? And when?
Lord 1: At midnight, in December, in an old church, your majesty.
Tom: Who was present there?
Lord 1: Only these two, your majesty and the devil.
Tom: Then how was it known?
Lord 2: Some people saw them when they were going to the church, your
majesty and thought that something was wrong. Soon, after that the woman and the girl,
with the help of the devil, made a terrible storm.
Tom: Did this woman also suffer from the storm?
Lord 2: Yes, she did, your majesty, she lost her house and she and her
child are homeless now.
Tom: Then I do not understand why she brought about the storm from which
she suffered herself. Is she mad? If she is, she does not know what she does. How did they
bring the storm?
Lord 1: They took off their stockings, your majesty.
Tom: How strange. Show us your power. I want to see a storm.
Woman: Oh, my Lord the King. I have no power.
Tom: Don’t be afraid. Make a storm for me. Do this and you will go out
free with your child.
Woman (падая на колени): I cannot do what the King wants.
Tom: You are free, good woman, you and your child. And now, don’t be
afraid, take off your stockings. Make me a storm and you will be rich.
Tom: It’s true. You have no power. Well, go your way in peace and if
the power comes back to you, do not forget to come and bring me a storm.
