1. The beginning of the lesson. Warming up.

T: Hello, boys and girls! I’m glad to see you! The theme of our lesson is “The place we live in”. We have spoken a lot about places you and other people live in. And today we are to have an optional lesson on this theme.

Let’s begin our lesson with phonetic drill. Repeat tongue twisters after me.

I can think of six thin things but I can think of six thick things too.

Whether the weather is hot or weather the weather is not.

Before your speaking about the places you live in answer my questions, please. Where do you live? Do you live in a flat or in a house?

P: I live in a flat.

P: I live in a flat, too.

T: Thank you. And I live in a flat, too. So you can say that the place all people live is a flat. Is that right? How do you think?

P: I think that’s right.

P: I don’t think that’s right because not all people live in flats. Many people live in houses.

T: I agree with you. You are right. How can you call the place we live in in general for all people?

P: I think it is our home.

2. Proverbs.

T: Yes you are right. The place we live in is our home. People like their homes, don’t they? There are many proverbs about homes. Do you remember them?

P: East or west home is best.

P: There is no place like home.

P: Home sweet home!

T: Well done. Thank you. All people like their homes. And we usually say: “My home is my castle”. And you know the proverb about the Englishman’s home. Say it, please.

P: The Englishman’s home is his castle.

3. English homes.

T: Very well. Now let’s speak about the traditional English house.

P: Many English families live in flats, but a lot of people have got their own house. There are two floors in the traditional English house; the ground floor and the first floor. The bedrooms and a bathroom (or bathrooms) are upstairs on the first floor. The sitting room, the dining room, the kitchen and a hall are downstairs on the ground floor.

The sitting room is usually the largest room in the house. There is always a sofa, some chairs and armchairs in it. There is often a carpet on the floor. It makes the room comfortable. English people usually have a fireplace in the sitting room. They often spend evenings in armchairs near the fire. They read books, watch TV, listen to music or sit around and talk. People in England like their homes and often say: “There is no place like home” and “East or West home is best”.

T: Thank you. You were good listeners. Now agree or disagree with me. Bedrooms are usually on the ground floor in the traditional English house.

P: No, they aren’t. They are on the first floor.

T: There are usually three floors in the traditional English house.

P: No, there aren’t. There are two floors in the traditional English house.

T: The largest room is the sitting room.

P: Yes, it is.

T: The sitting room is usually downstairs.

P: Yes, it is.

T: There is no fireplace in the traditional English house.

P: Yes, there is.

4. Houses in Russia.

T: Well done. You know about the traditional English house, as I see. Not only English people live in houses. Russian people live in houses, too. I think you sometimes live in houses, don’t you?

P: I live a house in summer.

T: Let’s speak about your country house.

P: (speaking about his/ her house) example: My grandparents have got a house in the country. It is large and light. There are two floors in it. There is a kitchen and a living room on the ground floor. There are three bedrooms on the first floor. My bedroom is light and comfortable. There is a carpet on the floor. It makes the room comfortable. There is an armchair near the window. I spend a lot of time in it reading a book. My grandparents’ favourite place in the house is a fireplace. There is a garden in front of the house. Etc… (рассказы детей могут быть разными, на доске вывешен наглядный материал, картинки с изображением разных предметов мебели и предметов, связанных с данной темой, для того, чтобы стимулировать детей к использованию лексических единиц по теме)
