Ход урока

I. Организационный момент.

Teacher: Good morning, everybody! Glad to see you, dear friends! Let's start our English lesson. The theme of our lesson is about ST. Patrick`s Day. This is an Irish holiday. Many English speaking countries and other countries celebrate it too.

Let's listen to report of pupil: Leading: (Ведущий)

March 17 is St. Patrick's Day. It's a national Irish holiday. But many people who immigrated to the United States have come from Ireland. Today, Irish descendants in the United States put on a noisier and bigger St. Patrick's Day celebration than the people in Ireland. Every year on March 17 or the preceding Saturday, cities with large population of Irish Americans have parades. Green is one of the national colors of Ireland and also one of the signs of spring. Green stripes are painted on the streets where the parade will travel. People wear green shirts, ties, hair ribbons and hats. Many American bars even serve green beer on that day!

II.

Teacher: Please, listen to me very attentively, then answer the questions:

St. Patrick

The person who was to become St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, was born in Wales about AD 385. When he was 16, he was sold into slavery to Ireland where he was a shepherd for 6 years. While in captivity he studied and turned to religion. He escaped slavery and later returned to Ireland as a missionary, determined to convert Ireland to Christianity. He used the shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity.

Patrick was quite successful at winning converts. And this fact upset the Celtic Druids. Patrick was arrested several times, but escaped each time. He traveled throughout Ireland, establishing monasteries across the country. He also set up schools and churches which would aid him in his conversion of the Irish country to Christianity.

His mission in Ireland lasted for thirty years. After that time, Patrick retired to County Down. He died on March 17 in AD 461. That day has been commemorated as St. Patrick's Day ever since.

III.

Teacher: Tell me please:

  1. When was St. Patrick born?
  2. What happened when he was sixteen? Зачем он вернулся в Ирландию?
  3. Why the Celtic Druids were upset by St. Patrick?
  4. What did also St. Patrick do in Ireland?
  5. Why St. Patrick`s Day is celebrated on March 17?

IV.

Teacher: There are many myths about St. Patrick. Here are some. Let`s read looking at the blackboard:

Just myths…so they say

  1. Patrick used a shamrock to explain the trinity
  2. Patrick drove the snakes out of the country.
  3. Patrick was the first to preach Christianity in Ireland.

Leading: Nowdays millions of people all over the world celebrate the parade devoted to St.Patrick`s Day. On this day the whole world become an Irish one. An Irish people and their friends remember national music and dances, perfomances and merry celebrations. But the first of all - parades with the parade of brass bands, extravagant costumes, folk art and smiling faces. On this day an American man become a honorary Irish. All aroun green, even even the fact that the greener could not in principle. The bars serve green beer ,in stores sell green bagels, while in Chicago, go to the next step and Paint water in the river in the green.

V. Presentation (about St. Patrick`s Day).

VI.

Teacher: There are a lot of poems about the clover. It is a symbol of this holiday. Let`s listen to the pupils.

Leading: St. Patrick`s Day has a lot of pagan motives. One of these heroes are Leprechauns:

An Irish legend.

Leprechauns have also become self-appointed guardians of ancient treasure (left by the Danes when they marauded through Ireland), buring it in crocks or pots. This may be one reason why leprechauns tend to avoid contact with humans whom they regard as foolish, flighty (and greedy?) creatures. If caught by a mortal, he will promise great wealth if allowed to go free. He carries two leather pouches. In one there is a silver shilling, a magical coin that returns to the purse each time it is paid out. In the other he carries a gold coin which he uses to try and bribe his way out of difficult situations. This coin usually turns to leaves or ashes once the leprechaun has parted with it. However you must not take your eye off him, for he can vanish in an instant.

VII.

Teacher: And the last task is to solve a crossword and guess the riddles.

VIII. Sizing up (Подведение итогов).

Teacher: Thank you . Let me do the conclusion. I think you know a lot about St. Patrick`s Day. What do you think if it`s right to pay a special attention and celebrate such religious holidays?

Pupils: Yes, of course. We would like to.

Teacher: I agree with you. I am glad you worked very well. (Учитель выставляет оценки.)

The lesson is over. See you later. Thank you for your work. Now you know a lot about St. Patrick’s Day and you are real Irelands!
