What is Ecology?

No living thing or group of living things can live and grow in isolation. All organisms, both plants and animals, need energy to develop and all species of living things influence the lives of others. Ecology is a science. It studies how plants, animals and other living things live in relation to each other and to their environment. People have always studied living things in their natural environment, in other words, they have always studied the air, the water, the soil and all the other things that surround a person, animal or plant. The environment can influence the growth and health of living things. Ecologists also study what happens to different species. They collect information about their population number, diet, form, size and behaviour. Ecology is one of the most important sciences nowadays. It teaches us how to survive in the modern world.

AIR POLLUTION

THE OLD DAYS

Until about 150 years ago, the air was pure and clean - perfect for the people and animals of the earth to breathe.

FACTORIES

Then people started building factories. Those factories and many of the things they make, like cars, put a lot of harmful gases into the air. Then people started driving cars, which added more pollution to the air. Many cities around the world have air filled with a pollution called "smog”.

TODAY. Today the air is so polluted in some places that it's not always safe to breathe!

DOWN WITH POLLUTION!

Polluted air is not only bad for people and animals, but for trees and other plants, as well. So it's very important for us to clean up the air we all breathe.

ACID RAIN

UP IN THE SKY

When we look up, we see the clouds and the blue sky. But there are other things in the sky that we don't see. Some of them are harmful to the Earth.

WHAT HAPPENS

When power plants burn coal to make electricity, and when cars born gasoline, invisible gases are released into the air. Some of these gases can mix with water and make it acidic, like lemon juice or vinegar.

WHAT CAN HAPPEN

Sometimes the gases get into rain clouds, where they get mixed in with rain or snow. Then the acid falls back to earth with the rain or snow. This is called acid rain.

BAD NEWS

Acid rain is extremely harmful to plants, rivers and lakes, and the creatures that live in them. In some places it is killing forests. And it pollutes the water that animals and people need to drink.

OUR MISSION

One good way to do that is to drive our cars less. Another good way is to save energy.

DISAPPEARING ANIMALS

THE PEOPLE ROOM

Every day, there are more and more people living on the Earth. All these people need room to live. So they move into places that are already homes for plants and animals. Forests are cut down and wild areas are filled with houses and stores.

WHAT HAPPENS

When people move into new land, the plants and animals that live there can become endangered - which means that because there's no place for them to live, they begin to disappear. Some even become extinct - which means that they all die out, and are gone from the Earth forever.

OUR MISSION

Let's keep the Earth green and healthy and full of millions of wonderful creatures!

ТОО MUCH GARBAGE!

GARBAGE AWAY!

When you throw something away, it goes in a garbage can. Once a week the garbage truck comes and the can is emptied, and that's the last you think happens to the garbage then? Does it just disappear? No way!

WHAT HAPPENS

Almost all garbage is taken to a garbage dump, or landfill, where the garbage truck empties it onto the ground. After the truck leaves, a big tractor comes along and pushes dirt on top of our garbage. So, most of our garbage is just buried.

OUR MISSION: We have to act fast and cut down the amount of garbage we make.

WATER POLLUTION

WATER, WATER

The planet Earth is mostly water. Oceans cover the biggest part of it – and there are lakes, rivers, streams and even water underground. All life on Earth – from the least bug to the biggest whale – depends on this water. It’s precious. But in many places the water has become polluted.

RIVERS AND LAKES

Rivers and lakes are polluted by garbage or by poisonous chemicals which are dumped right into them.

THE SEAS AND OCEANS

The ocean, which is a home to so much life, has been used as a place to dump garbage and poisonous chemicals for a long time. It’s getting polluted, too.

OUR MISSIONS

We need to save our water, to keep it clean and healthy so people, plants and animals will always have some to drink. And so fish and other creatures will have a place to live.

THE GREENHOUSE

A GREENHOUSE?

A greenhouse is a building made of glass, where you can grow flowers and other plants that need a lot of warmth.

HOW IT WORKS

The sun shines in through the glass and warms the greenhouse, and the roof and walls keep the heat from getting out.

OUR GREENHOUSE The Earth is surrounded by a blanket of invisible gases (with names like carbon dioxide) that act just like a greenhouse. The sun shines in, and the blanket of gases traps the heat like a roof, keeping it close to the planet. That's good - we can't live without warmth.

WHAT'S GOING ON

Factories, electric power plants, and cars are making a lot of new gases. Even trees, when they're cut down, give off the gases! These new gases are trapping more and more of the sun's heat. This is called the greenhouse effect, or global warming.

WHAT CAN HAPPEN

If the earth's temperature gets hotter by just a few degrees, it could change the weather all over the planet in big ways. Places that are warm would become too hot to live in, and places that are cold would become warm. The places that grow most of our food could get too hot to grow crops anymore.

THE OZONE HOLE

THE OSONE LAYER

Up in the sky, above the air we breathe, there's a layer of gas called ozone. It helps us by blocking out rays from the sun that can harm our skin, and by letting the rays that are good for us come through. We're lucky to have the ozone to protect us.

WHAT'S HAPPENING

Now the ozone layer is being damaged by gases that people have made. The gases are called CFCs, and halogen. They are used in refrigerators, fire extinguishers, air conditioners, plastic foam. The gases float up to the top of atmosphere, where the layer of ozone is, and "eat up" the ozone.

OUR MISSION

Scientists are very concerned about the ozone layer, because a lot of it has gone away in just a few years. So it's very important that we learn to do something about it.

THE EARTH IS OUR HOME

The Earth is our home, but much of it is dirty and dying. By the year 2030, scientists report that 25% of all animals, birds, fish and insects may be extinct. At the moment, 94% of the word's energy comes from oil, gas and coal. But these "fossil fuels" won't last forever. There's only enough oil and gas for the next 50 years. Coal will last longer - perhaps about 300 years. And then? Well, one answer is nuclear energy. But today, after Chernobyl, many people think it's too dangerous. There are four solutions. They all use natural energy in the environment wind energy, solar energy, wave energy (from the sea), and geothermal energy (from "hot" rocks under the ground). It's clean and natural, but there's another problem: they all are rather expensive.

Today, many scientists and world leaders realize that the Earth is in danger. Either we stop killing the Earth or we kill ourselves. We need a cleaner, healthier planet. Millions of people understand this. Some of them belong to the so-called "Green" or earth - friendly organizations in countries all over the world. Groups like "Green Peace" have already helped to stop the hunting of some animals, such as whales. What else can be done?

What Can I Do?

1 ученик: I am Anna from Canada. They are beginning to build a new road near our beautiful park. Birds and small animals are afraid of people and the noise from roads. So they will leave this place. My friends and I are going to write to our local politicians and ask them to stop building the road.

2 ученик: I am Liza from Australia. I am an animal lover, so I don't eat meat. Sheep, pigs and cows aren't in danger, but they don't live in their natural environment and they die young for meat eaters.

3 ученик: I am Mike from Sweden. I always walk or go by bike. People can do something about pollution from cars.

4 ученик: I am Mr. Potter from Great Britain. I give money to protect wild animals - whales and dolphins. I think it is very important to help these wonderful sea animals to survive.

5 ученик: I am Maria Ivanova from Russia. I used to wear a fox coat and I loved it. But now I think it is terrible to wear a coat from a dead animal. I'll never do it again.

6 ученик: I am Mark from France. I never go to the zoo. I hate zoos because I think that animals are not happy there. Zoos are not natural places for any animals.

7 ученик: I am Mary from the USA. I never buy early spring flowers. Most of them are endangered and I think it is very bad to make money by destroying them!

Shall We Survive?

People have been polluting the planet on which they live for many years. The result is very sad. We all live in a polluted word. Pollution started in a small way, but then it began growing and soon we all shall be in danger. The time has come to save our planet, to protect people, animals and plants from dying.

First of all countries should have strong laws to control pollution, to protect animals and plants. Governments should be responsible for protecting nature. Today the law in some countries says: "The polluter must pay. If a person damages trees or animals, he must also pay". But unfortunately such good laws don't always work.

Scientists often meet and talk about ways of helping nature, and politicians in many countries listen to them and are beginning to talk about this too.

Countries can open national parks. They are big and usually very beautiful places without buildings. These are homes for animals living freely and also for birds, trees and flowers. Visitors can go there but they can't hunt there. Politicians can think of ways to stop hunting.

Учащимся предлагается просмотреть фрагмент из документального фильма “Национальные парки США”.

Ученик 8: We learn about ecology at our Biology, History, Geography and English lessons. Even though we are children we can protect our planet. There are a lot of ways how to save the Earth.

Учащиеся подходят к плакату с изображением земного шара, снимают таблички со “стрелами-проблемами” и вместо них прикрепляют “облачка” с пожеланиями:

Plant trees Don’t litter
Grow flowers Feed birds in winter
Leave wild flowers for others to enjoy Save water
Recycle and reuse old paper Don’t pollute
Reduce energy consumption When you hike leave the place clean

 Ученик 9:

Think Green! To save the planet!
Think Green! Do all you can!
Think Green! For all our children!
Think Green! For the race of man!
If we all pull together
Something can be done
If we think green and act fast
The war will soon be won.
