Putting the aims
T: Good morning to everybody. Today we’re going to learn about English banknotes, what images they have and why; we’ll listen to and read the text and you’ll give the summary of it; then you’ll write a description of a Russian banknote. Are you ready to start?
SS: Yes, we are.

Introducing the topic / warming up
T: So, open your books on page 53and look at the pictures in exercise 1. Do you know who these people are?
S1: Yes, in the first picture I can see Queen Elizabeth II.
T: What do you know about the Queen?
S2: She’s the head of the UK and the Commonwealth of Nations, she’s have her diamond jubilee in 2012.
S3: She’s got four children and seven grandchildren. Etc.
T: Are there any other persons you know?
S4: I know Adam Smith. He’s a famous English economist.
T: How do you think these people are related to English banknotes?
S5: They are famous people and they did something important for the country.
T: That’s right.

Presenting the person – Elizabeth Fry
T: And what do you know about Elizabeth Fry?
S6: I can only suppose that she was a famous person of her time.
T: You’re right and now we’re going to learn some information about her.
(For this part of the lesson the Internet and a white board SMART are used). http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/famouspeople/standard/fry/index.shtml  Teacher shows the presentation and asks questions)
T:When was Elizabeth born? What family did she come from? What education did she get? Why did she decide to help women prisoners? What conditions were for women and children in Newgate Prison? How did Elizabeth help them?  What is the 1823 Gaol Act? Etc.
Now let’s consolidate the information and answer the question: what was Elizabeth Fry famous for?
S6: She worked hard to improve living conditions for women in Newgate Prison and for prisoners all over England.
S7: Elizabeth Fry came from a noble family, she was a well educated person and she was interested in charity work since her childhood.
S8: She spoke in Parliament about prisons and as a result the 1823 Gaol Act was passed and some improvements were made.
T: Yes, we can see that she was a very famous person of the time.

Reading to form derivatives
T: Now you’ll read the text about English banknotes to learn more about them. While reading you should
fill in the gaps with the derivatives of the words in brackets.
SS read the text on their own (5 -7 minutes).
T: I see that you’re ready. Let’s listen to the text and check your answers. (T pauses upon each gap to check the answers. Keys: 1 illustration,2 prisoners, 3various, 4recently, 5composer, 6building).

Working with new vocabulary
T: Do you understand the text well?
SS: Yes, we do.
T: Here in the text you can see some words in bold. Look at the blackboard – there are the words and their explanation. Your task is the match the words and their meanings. (For this part of the lesson a white board SMART is used.) Приложение1.
SS come to the blackboard and match the words, then press the button Check. (Key: improving – making better; developed – invented; evolution – gradual development; governor – director; site – location).
T: Let’s make sentences with the words. You may take some ideas from the text.
SS own answers.

Training reading skills
T: Well done! Now you’ll listen to the text by paragraphs. Your task is to read altogether with the announcer, try to follow his pronunciation and intonation, and then you’ll read paragraphs for marks.
(SS read the text by paragraphs trying to imitate the announcer. Teacher comments their reading and gives marks).

Talking about English banknotes
T: Look at the blackboard, please. Here you can see images of English banknotes. Приложение2
Work in pairs, discuss with your desk mate how to describe the notes, use all information you’ve learnt.
(Teacher monitors their activity and assists if necessary).
T: Now you are ready to tell us what you have learnt about English banknotes. Are there any volunteers to come to the blackboard? (SS come to the blackboard and describe the banknotes, their task is to use as much information as they can).
SS own answers. (If they have some difficulties, Teacher or class ask them questions).
T comments descriptions and gives marks.

Writing a description of a Russian banknote
T: We are going to have a writing competition. Again you will work in pairs. This time you will write a description of Russian 10-Ruble banknote. On the blackboard you can see its image and some words and phrases which help you to complete your description. Приложение3. You should write it in 7 minutes time. Use the text on page 53 as a model.
SS read their descriptions (3 -4 pairs, it depends on time), then class discuss their works and give the marks.

Summarizing and giving homework
T: Today we’ve read and talk about English banknotes. What is common between them?
S1: All of them have a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the front.
T: What is there on the back of them?
S2: There are portraits of famous historical persons. For example, five-pound note has a portrait of Elizabeth Fry, and twenty-pound note shows Adam Smith.
T: What differences between the notes have you mentioned?
S3: The notes are different in colour. Five-pound note is blue and green as fifty-pound note is red in colour.
T comments the marks for the lesson and gives homework (WB p.30; two students prepare presentations about Edward Elgar and Sir John Houblon). One of the students comes to the blackboard to writes it down.
