Today we'll speak about the New Year celebrations in different countries. I'd like to draw your attention to some interesting national traditions of different countries and cultures. First of all let's talk about the celebration of the New Year in our country.
Students: On the 31st of December we celebrate the coming of the New Year. We send greeting cards, buy presents, decorate the New Year tree and our houses, and congratulate each other. It is the favourite holiday of the year. On the 7th of January it is Christmas Day. We also have our school holidays.
2. Teacher: Now let's speak about the celebration of the New Year in other countries. We are going to have a competition. We have 2 teams. They are: Snowflakes and Elves.

1 Read the text and choose the correct version.
At the end of December in this country the summer is at its height, but there the New Year is celebrated with European traditions, too. But because of the heat, Santa Claus moves not in a sledge but on a wind-surfer, he has the same red cap and white fluffy beard, but he doesn't wear a fur-coat and valenki, he wears a bathing-suit. On the there are no fir-trees, there is neither snow, deer, nor sledges. But before the New Year, inhabitants place a little tree called metrosideros in their houses. The tree is very beautiful. At that time it is covered with bright-red flower-bunches and looks like a decorated fir-tree. In this country, celebrating the New Year's Eve is not popular. Inhabitants get up at 5-6 o'clock in the morning but at 10 minutes past midnight they will have already gone to bed. But in the New Year evening, it is popular to go in big groups to parks and have a jolly time much like anywhere in Europe at night.

5. Before the New Year, the people of the country often wrap bells up with blankets that they should see off the old year with muted quiet striking. And only at 5 minutes to twelve the blankets will be taken off and the bells will meet the approaching of the New Year with merry chimes In the country before the New Year a door in a house must be opened - it is the custom to let the New Year in. Late in the evening, people open a back door to let out the old year with all its troubles, which happened this year, and when the clock begins to strike twelve, they open the front door to let the New Year in. If in the house there is only one door, they open it. At first through it the old year goes away and then the New Year enters.

6. These people consider that good luck or failure the coming year depends on who is the first to enter a house. For this, a guest must have a piece of coal in hand and it is necessary to throw it into a fireplace. And if the fire burns bright, the following year will be more successful. By popular belief, dark-haired men bring much more happiness. The people are grateful to the first visitor who brings a piece of coal, a piece of bread and a coin. A piece of coal symbolizes warmth, a piece of bread - the constant presence of food, and a coin - welfare in the coming year.
