Lesson plan

Theme: “Passive Voice”

Objective: practice using Passive Voice in oral and writing speech.

Equipment used: computer, multimedia projector, cards.

I. Warming up.

Good morning, dear friends! The theme of the lesson today is Passive Voice. It isn’t new for you. We are going to revise everything we have already known and learn some new thing on the grammar material. Let’s start.

Each of you have some sheets of paper on the desks with the tasks for today’s lesson.

  1. Task # 1. In pairs read the text and underline the passive forms. (Приложение 1)
  2. Answer the questions to the text:
  1. When was the women’s team sport included in the Olympics?
  2. What was added to the Olympic Games in 1976?
  3. What was first played in 1998?
  4. Are the women’s teams a success in the Olympics?

II. Revision.

  2. Let’s revise Passive Voice in different tense forms (Slides 3-4)

III. Consolidation of the Passive forms

  1. (Slide 5) Choose the correct word or phrase and define the tense form.
  2. (Приложение 2) Put the verbs in brackets in the correct tense form.

IV. Practice

  1. (Slide 6) Let’s see if we can use Passive Constructions in Present / Past / Future Perfect Continuous tenses.
  2. Paraphrase the sentences using the words given (Slide 7)

  2. The new road has been under construction for a long time now.
  3. The horse had been in training for the race for over a year.
  4. The issue has been under discussion in Parliament.
  5. The criminal had been under observation for the past two weeks.
  6. The plane has been in use for over 25 years now.
  7. The CyborgD423 robot has been in development for over ten years.
  1. Group work. (The students are divided into two groups and are given the tasks)
    The teacher sets the situation: Sarah Ford, the well-known millionaire’s daughter, was kidnapped yesterday.
    Using the cues prepare the story in two minutes. (Приложение 3)

V. Revision.

1) (Slide 8) Using prepositions “by” and “with” with passive constructions.
2) (Slide 9) Put the following sentences into the Passive Voice using necessary preposition.

VI. Changing from Active into Passive Voice (Slide 10)

1) (Slide 11) Turn from Active into Passive.
2) Listen to the following sentences and change them into Passive Voice.

  1. Steven Spielberg has directed a lot of successful films.
  2. The number of reporters will meet the professor at the airport.
  3. A famous designer is going to redecorate the President’s house.
  4. Van Gogh painted “Sunflowers”.
  5. Astronauts are exploring space.
  6. They kill elephants for ivory.
  7. People chop down a lot of trees every year.
  8. They check passports at Passport Control.
  9. A million people visit the cathedral every year.
  10. Someone has stolen Mike’s bicycle.

VII. Using the Passive with the verbs believe, expect, hope, know, etc.

1) (Slide 12) Revision.
2) Practice. (Slide 13) Paraphrase the sentences starting with the words given.
3) Individual task. (Приложение 4) Turn the sentences into the Passive as in the example. (Students fulfill the task, exchange the papers and check each other’s tasks. After that they pass the papers to the teacher having written the name of the student who checks the task.)

VIII. Home task.

(Приложение 5) Using the notes write the news report using the Passive.
