1. Warming-up
Teacher: Good morning, boys and girls!
Pupils: Good morning teacher!
Teacher: What date is it today?
Pupils: It is the 22nd of September today.
2. Introduction
Teacher: Today we are going to speak about London! (Slide №1)
Look at the blackboard! Can you answer my questions? (Slide №2)
Pupils: London is a big city.
It is situated in Great Britain.
You can see Big Ben, The River Thames:
Teacher: Today at the lesson we will listen about London a lot and at the end of the lesson you will answer all these questions.
3. Presentation "This is London"
Teacher: London is the biggest city in Britain. (Slide № 3)
Over seven million people live and work in London. By the way, do you know how many people live in Moscow? What city is bigger? (Slide № 4)
Pupils: There are about 12 million people in Moscow. Moscow is bigger than London.
Teacher: London is also one of the most important cities in the world. It is a centre for business and tourism. And now a brief history of London. (Slide № 5)
The Roman Empire was flourishing at that time. (Slide № 6)
The Romans came to Britain in AD 43. (Slide № 7) Do you know what AD means? (Teacher explains AD on a timeline on the board)
The Romans built a town on the River Thames. Why was the river important in those days? (Slide № 8)
Pupils: Because they can travel on the river. They can buy and sell things.
Teacher: They called the town Londinium. Let's repeat it together. Londinium. (Slide № 9)
Pupils: Londinium.
Teacher: The famous Roman emperor Julian Caesar named the British Islands "Misty Albion". Why? (Slide № 10)
Look at this picture! He said that when he saw these white cliffs of Dover (Slide № 11)
William the Conqueror came to England in 1066. He was from France. He won the battle and named himself a king of England. (Slide № 12)
But William was afraid of the people of London. So he built the White Tower to feel safe. (Slide № 13)
Do you think it helped him to feel safe? (Slide № 14)
Pupils: Yes, he felt safe.
Teacher: Now it is a museum. (Slide № 15)
And many tourists visit the Tower of London every year. (Slide № 16)
The Crown Jewels - the Queen's gold and jewels - are kept there. (Slide № 17)
The old legend says that until the ravens live in the Tower London will be rich and wealthy city. The Londoners look after the ravens carefully. (Slide № 18)
There were many famous people who lived and worked in London. Do you know Shakespeare? What was he? (Slide № 19)
Pupils: He was a writer.
Teacher: Yes, he wrote thirty-six plays. They were performed in the Globe Theatre. The theatre was destroyed by a fire in 1613.
A new Globe Theatre was built in 1997 in the same place. (Slide № 20)
The houses in Shakespeare's London were built very close to each other. They were made of wool. Sometimes there were small fires. But there also was a Great Fire of London. When was it? (Slide № 21)
Pupils: It was in 1666.
Teacher: Where did it start? Why?
Pupils: It started at the backer's house in Pudding Lane. It started because he cooked bread over the fire in a big oven.
Teacher: Why did it go quickly from house to house?
Pupils: It went very quickly because the houses were wooden, the streets were narrow. The weather was very hot and dry.
Teacher: The most of London was burnt down. (Slide № 22)
Another famous person who lived and worked in London was Charles Dickens. He lived from 1812 to 1870. He wrote about the lives of the rich and poor people of London at that time. (Slide № 23)
Dickens's most famous book is "Oliver Twist". Do you know this book? (Slide № 24)
Pupils: Yes, we do / No, we don't.
Teacher: The River Thames is the part of London's history. It has always been at the centre of the city. (Slide № 25)
Until 1749 there was only one bridge across the river. There were houses and shops on the bridge. (Slide № 26)
Now there are more than twenty bridges across the River Thames. The Millennium Bridge is a new one. It is very beautiful. (Slide № 27)
