- заинтересовать учеников произведениями классической английской и американской литературы;
- воспитать у школьников чувство бережного отношения к мировой художественной литературе, культуре чтения;
- развивать внимание, память, воображение, связную речь.
Форма мероприятия: викторина с использованием ИКТ.
Адресная направленность: обучающиеся 8-х классов.
Техническое сопровождение: экран, проектор, компьютер, компьютерные презентации к отдельным заданиям викторины.
The literary contest
The host: Today we have gathered here to take part in the literary contest and see which team is the best in their knowledge of English and American literature. I wish you good luck and let’s begin.
Task 1.
The host: Dear boys and girls! In the first task you will see the portraits of some famous English and American writers and some brief information about them. You have to remember and put down their names in English using the information given.
- This author used his colleague’s daughter as a prototype of the main character in one of his books. He enjoyed mixing the elements of a fantasy world with the most realistic details.
- This author used to be notorious in England for his style of life. He produced a collection of children’s fairy tales, some comedies and a well-known novel.
- The works of this author reflect his own personal experiences of the harsh struggle for survival in the US Far North.
- This writer was born in Bombay and is well-known for his poems and short stories. He was the first English writer to be awarded the Noble Prize for literature.
- The works of this English writer are repetitive with few changes, her characters are middle-class country gentry whose most urgent preoccupation is to find a suitable partner and merry.
- The house of this English writer became the centre of the Bloomsberry Group of intellectuals. She is considered a leading exponent of modernism for her use of stream of consciousness, especially in the novels To the Lighthouse and Orlando.
- This author, born in Dublin, spent most of his life in England. He wrote many plays mostly based on his political and social ideas.
- This American is the writer of predominantly short stories and novels. Both of his most important novels, his masterpieces The Great Gatsby and Tender is the Night, contain a number of autobiographical features.

Task 6. Writing a short story.
The host: Write a Christmas story for your school’s English language magazine. The beginning of the story is given to you. Using your imagination, continue it making your narrative writing exciting and clear to read.
Once upon a time there was a girl called Heather who lost her cat. Mag, the cat, was a very special animal because it could talk. It talked only to Heather, who was very upset when Mag disappeared, and thought someone may have overheard them talking together. Not knowing that Mag would talk only to Heather, the thieves probably thought they could sell the cat for a lot of money.
