Procedure
Teacher: Hi, everybody. You know that The Sea Breeze
gift shop advertised the job in the Weekly Post on Friday 11th November (Appendix 1).
Six students of our group were interested in the position advertised and they sent their
formal e-mail Letters of Application to the shop
(Appendix 2).
The Secretary of the Sea Breeze gift shop compared the Letters and
selected the most suitable applications to prepare a short list of candidates. She is
going to invite the candidates to write an English Language Test. Now,
let’s see. Well, the students (candidates) are waiting for their turn
to be interviewed. (The students are sitting at their desks). The Human Resources Manager,
the Human Resources Assistant and the Secretary with the papers come here and take your
seats. You are the interviewers. (The students come to the board and take their seats at
the desk in front of the class or at the teacher’s table).
The secretary starts reporting to the Human Resources Assistant about the criteria of her selection.
Ms. May: “Well, Ann, twenty two students applied for the job but I have chosen only six due to:
- nine letters are badly written,
- seven candidates are too young.
I prepared a short list and I’m going to invite the candidates to write a language test before the Interview. I think, on Wednesday at 11 o’clock”
Ms. Ross: “Thanks Katty, well done. I’m going to discuss with the Manager how to evaluate the candidates”. To the Manager: “Look, Alan, Katty has prepared the short list with the most suitable candidates for the post. On Wednesday they come to pass the language test. And on Friday, at 10 am we’ll invite the candidates for the interview. I think we should evaluate them on the following qualities:
- Is the candidate creative;
- Is the candidate flexible and capable of learning;
- Does he/she have enough skills and knowledge;
- How will the candidate work under pressure.
Mr. Green: “Agree. I think general impression is also important. Let me see… on Friday at 10 o’clock. OK… Be ready with the questions.”
WEDNESDAY, 11 o’clock.
Candidates (students) are sitting at their desks and the “secretary” gives them the test, then she collects the papers and corrects the mistakes (Appendix 3).
FRIDAY, 10 o’clock.
Mr. Green, Ms. Ross, Ms. May are the interviewers. They are sitting at the table with
the candidates’ applications and with the results of the language test as well as with
the written questions for the interview.

Mr. Green: We will be in touch with you before the end
of the week. Good-bye.
The interviewers interviewed all the invited candidates and started discussing the applicants to choose the best one and make a final decision.
Ms. Ross: I think Ms.
Olivi was the best. She speaks different languages. It’s important. She is experienced.
She worked with many different people and knows how to deal with them.
Ms. May: I agree with you, but Martin
Frank is also experienced. He has got good communication skills. He is a creative young
fellow and he speaks French and Italian. I think he will be useful for us.
Mr. Green: Yes, both of them are perfect and Mike Evans
is not bad too. He is a hard-working young man and he speaks German. He lives close to the

messages to the candidates to inform them about their duties, working hours and the date
when they can start.
