Skating and skiing in Russia.
Winter in Russia has its advantages. No need to go to Alpine or other mountain resorts to ski. Russia offers good opportunities for skiing due to its snowy frosty winters. As for skaters, they can enjoy their favorite sport on the many artificial ice arenas and skating rinks.
Skating came to Russia in the 16th century. Some 120 years ago there were no racers or figure skaters in Russia. The first Russian competitions in skating represented a mixture of different events. For many years women could not take part in the winter competitions at all. They were first allowed to participate in them only in 1910. Strict norms dictated women to wear long skirts and half length coats during the skating competitions not to insult public morals. There were 10 skating rinks only in Moscow in 1910. People skated in masquerade costumes. Military bands usually opened their performance with a march called” Long Live Skaters. The most famous skating rinks were on the Moscow River, Red Pond, Patriarchal Ponds and others.

7. It is a team competition. There are 3-4 sportsmen in one team. All relays have 4 stages. The first stage is skied by the classical style. During the 2nd, 3d and 4th - free style is used. Each stage is 2,5–10 km long.
8. Two parallel ski lines are prepared for the Classical style ski race. Cycles are represented with a number of steps for one push of ski sticks. Cycles are divided into two-step, four-step and no-step ones.
