KING ARTHUR AND THE NIGHTS OF THE ROUND TABLE
1 compere (1-й ведущий): Ladies and gentlemen! Northwest of Europe the united Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland lies. The millennial history of it is very rich and has a lot of interesting pages, but today we’ll touch only one of them – we’ll speak about the Great King Arthur and the Knights of Round Table.
2 compere (2-й ведущий): I wonder, King Arthur is a real person or it’s a fiction?
1-й ведущий: Well, there was a real Arthur, an Arthur who fought the Saxon invaders and won a great battle at mount Badon in A.D. 500. But around him has grown up a great collection of romantic stories.
2-й ведущий: and now watch the sketches about King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table.

the storyteller – once there was a King in Great Britain called King Uther He loved the beautiful princess Igraine, but she didn’t love him.
King Uther – Oh! The most beautiful and perfect Princess Igraine, do me the honour to be my wife!
Igraine – No, Sir King. I don’t love you.
the storyteller – there was a magician named Merlin. One day Merlin came to King Uther
Merlin – King Uther! I'll help you. You will marry Princess Igraine and she will have a son. I will help you if you give me that son.
King Uther – I will give him to you.
Merlin – Then go to Princess Igraine.
King Uther – Oh! The most beautiful and perfect princess Igraine, do me the honour to be my wife.
Igraine – Yes, Sir King Uther, I’ll be your wife.
Storyteller – So King Uther married Igraine and they had a son. They named him Arthur. When Arthur was only three days old , Merlin came. Then the King Uther took the child and gave him to Merlin.

(1-й ведущий) – Let’s miss the description of Arthur’s life. I want only mention that Arthur married the most beautiful Princess Guinevere and Merlin made the Round Table. Each knight had his name written on it.

(2-й ведущий) – But according other version King Arthur set up the Round Table. He gathered a brave company of knights – the Knights of the Round Table. The table was round to show that all were equal, even the King himself. One Can see this table I Winchester castle.
Storyteller – Let’s watch another scene about King Arthur. King Arthur broke his sword in a fight . Merlin came to him.
Merlin. – Come with me and you’ll get a better sword. Let’s go to the lake.
Storyteller – They went to the lake and when they came they saw an arm with a sword came out of the water.
Merlin. – Go and take it. It’s the sword Excalibur. It’s a magic sword.
Arthur – Thank you magician Merlin. (takes the sword). This sword will be used for the righteous cause. I swear.
2-й ведущий – And what happened to King Arthur and his Knights then?
1-й ведущий – The Knights went to search for the Holy Grail and many of them didn’t return. And while Arthur was fighting his enemies in France, the wicked knight Sir Modred whom Arthur had left to rule the land, plotted against the King and gathered the army to fight against Arthur. Arthur returned and a great battle took place in the west of Britain by the seashore and Modred was killed by Arthur, but Arthur himself was wounded. Then Arthur said to Sir Bedivere……..
(the scene)
Arthur – The end has come. Take my sword Excalibur and throw it into the deep water. Watch what happens and come back to me.
Storyteller – Sir Bedivere goes away, but he can’t throw such a precious sword and hide it under a tree.
Arthur – What did you see and what did you hear?
Sir Bedivere – I saw nothing, but the waves and head nothing but the wind.
Arthur – That’s not true. I order you to go again and throw the sword into the sea.
Storyteller – Sir Bedivere goes away.
Sir Bedivere – It’s a sin throw away so noble a sword. It should be kept. People in all times can see it and remember of the Great King.
Storyteller – And Sir Bedivere leaves the sword under the tree and returns to King Arthur. – What did you see and what did you hear?
Sir Bedivere – Sir, I saw the water washing on the rocks and heard the wind blowing in the trees.
Arthur – Traitor! Go and do as I command or I’ll rise and kill you.
Storyteller – And Sir Bedivere went back to the water and throw the sword and an arm rose out of the sea and caught the sword. And Bedivere hurried back.
Sir Bedivere – Oh my Lord Arthur! What shall I do? Now you are taken from me and all my friends of the Round Table are gone!
Arthur – Find comfort in yourself. My life is ended. Pray for my soul. (dies)
Sir Bedivere – The greatest King is gone!

(Ведущий) – So Arthur went away and you can see his grave at Glastonbury where it says “Here lies Arthur, once King and King to be” Many peole believed that he was not dead but was still living in the happy valley of Avalon until his country needed him when he would come again to free it from enemies.

(1-й ведущий) – And now we are going west to another English-speaking the United Stats of America. It’s the fourth largest nation in the world. It stretches from the Pacific to the Atlantic ocean.

(2-й ведущий) – In the state of Massachusetts there is a place which is called
Plymouth Rock
Tourists from all parts of the country and other countries come here.
I wonder, why it is so famous?
1-й ведущий – Oh, this story takes the beginning over three hundred years ago when a ship “Mayflower” left the English port Plymouth and sailed to the world North America.

The pilgrims suffered from fierce storms and winds, one beam
Broke and some of them suggested to go back.
1 pilgrim (woman) – Oh, my Lord! We’ll perish! All of us! Let’s return!
2 pilgrim – If we repair the main beam and we don’t use all the sails we will not sink.
3 pilgrim – Let’s trust in God!
(a sailor appears)
1-й ведущий – Yes, that was America. What a joy the pilgrims had! They named the place where thy had landed Plymouth Rock. And now tourists coming there stand looking at the place from which the united States began and think of those brave people who’d landed there many years ago.

2-й ведущий – The United Sates? But as far as I know those days there was no such a country – the United Sates.
1-й ведущий – You are right. But there were 13 British colonies in North American continent. These colonies were rather rich, but they couldn’t trade with other countries and couldn’t buy any goods except at Britain.
2-й ведущий – As far as I remember the famous “Boston Tea Party” simulated the beginning of the war for Independence.

a speaker – Colonists! Why should we be under British protection? Why must we pay taxes to the British? We can trade ourselves! Down with the British!
The crowd – Down with the British! We want to be independent!
1-й ведущий – So when the ship with tea aboard came to Boston harbor 50 men dressed like
Indians climbed aboard and threw all tea into the water, so to say “made tea”.
2-й ведущий – And in other colonies learned about it and approved. When the War for
Independence began, George Washington lead the American army.
1-й ведущий – On the 4th of July 1776, in Philadelphia , the Declaration of Independence was signed and the Liberty Bell said to the happy people outside that a new nation had been born.

2-й ведущий – In February the Americans celebrate President’s Day. This holiday honours two their great presidents George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.The 16th president Ab. Lincoln is the brightest example how one can rise from the lowest social position to the highest level.

Abraham Lincoln was born on a small farm in Kentucky. But soon the family worked from morning till night clearing the land of trees and lived in a shelter. When Abe was 8 years old an axe was put into his hands and he worked with his family. He was considered to be lazy, except studying.
Abe’s father – Look, he is reading again. Our son is lazy. If books can help to become rich? We can’t rely on him.
Abe’s mother – Calm, please. Maybe our son will be a learned man and then he will not forget us.
Abe’s father – God knows!
1-й ведущий – the first city which Abraham saw was New Orleans and it was here in the famous slave market that he saw men, women and children being sold

and greatly moved he said
Abe – If I have a chance to hit this thing I’ll hit it hard.
2-й ведущий – when Abraham Lincoln became President he began the struggle for abolition.

A.L. – Gentlemen Congressmen! Slavery is a great shame for our country! All men are created equal that they are endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
A congressman – Mister President, Sir! We, congressmen from southern states, don’t agree. Black and white people can’t be equal. If the Emancipation Proclamation is adopted we, southerners, will leave the Federation.
A.L. – Gentlemen! America will not admit this! We’ll make you to obey by force!
2-й ведущий – The southerners left the Federation and elected their own President Jefferson Devis. To make them obey the civil war between North and South began. And at first the North was loosing.

a secretary – Sir President, a message from the commander in chief.
A.L. – Read, please.
a secretary – Take as a Christmas gift the city of Savanna.

The North won, the war ended, the South was in ruins. But still now A.L. is one of the most honored U.S. presidents.
