Ход урока

1. Организационный момент. Сообщение темы и целей урока.

Good morning, girls and boys. Good morning our guests. Pleased to meet you.

We are having an unusual lesson today. Our lesson is devoted to fashion. The title of the lesson is “This Glamorous World of Fashion: the Past and the Present”. We will speak about fashion styles in the past, about the role of fashion in our modern life. I hope you’ll take an active part in the lesson.

2. Речевая разминка.

Look at these English proverbs:
Good clothes open all doors.
Never judge from appearances.
You can’t tell a book by its cover.

Beauty is only skin-deep.
All that glitters is not gold.
Appearances are deceptive.
Do these proverbs the same or different?

What proverb is different from the others?
What do these proverbs mean?
Do you agree with them?
Do you have similar proverbs in your language?

Teacher: How can you define fashion?

P.: It’s a way of dressing that popular at a certain time.

Teacher: Do you like fashion? Is it important for you? Does fashion play a great role in your life?

What area of fashion interests you most – clothes, hairstyle, cosmetics, shoes, accessories?

Are you a slave to fashion/ follower, victim of fashion? Do you have your own fashion or follow the crowds?

How does fashion affect our lives?

P.: Everybody says that I’m trendy. I enjoy wearing stylish clothes. I like to look smart and attractive. We can’t go through life with the same hairstyle. I prefer casual things: jeans, T-shirts, sweaters. Sometimes I turn up in something extravagant. When you are up with fashion you feel you are an individual. At the same time don’t worry about your jeans when the others are dressed up at the party and all quests will think that it is normal.

Teacher: You know that every fashion goes through some stages. How many stages does every fashion go through? What are they?

P.: Every fashion goes through three stages. At first it is different. It may be new, exciting, shocking, surprising, provoking and original. Then it becomes popular and usual. Finally it becomes boring, out-of-date, and a new fashion starts.

Teacher: Now we’ve come to the point that clothes are immediate. They tell us about people right away, about a particular period of time in history. Now let’s remember fashion styles in different periods of times.

What were the fashions of the past? Present your information.

3. Тренировка монологической речи.

P1: In Tudor Times (16–17 centuries) the most successful men and women demonstrated their wealth wearing silk, woolen and linen clothing. The dresses were richly decorated with coloured embroidery.

In 17 century there appeared silver buckles on shoes and sleeves with lace; girls were the victims of their parents wish to match the popular idea of beauty: slim bodies, tight waists and pale appearance.

The years of Queen Victoria’s ruling were the years of prosperity for Britain. The whole nation was influenced by the standards set by decent and modest style of English Queen. In that period people who followed fashion were condemned. It was not only bad taste but also a sin to wear lace or frills.

P2: Before the First World War fashions didn’t change quickly. Men wore dark suit. They had short hair and moustaches were popular. Women wore long dresses and they had long hair.

In the period after the first World War women’s fashions changed much more than men’s.

British women won the right to vote. They showed off their sense of independence in wearing their hair short and wearing low-waisted short dresses.

P3: In the 1930 and 40s hair, dresses and coats became longer again. Men’s fashion didn’t change very much. In the 1950s people were richer and teenagers spent a lot of money on clothes. For men this was age of the Teddy boy. Teddy boys wore long jackets in very bright colours – pink, orange or yellow – and very tight trousers. For women jumpers and blouses with wide skirts and short socks were in fashion. Both men and women wore shoes with long pointed toes. The women’s shoes had high stiletto heels. Men wore a suit, a tie and usually a hat, too. Moustaches were less popular. Fashion became colourful and exciting.

P4: The 1960s saw a revolution in clothes. Everything changed. This was the time of the mini – skirt and long boots. Man had long hair – the famous Beatles haircut. Space travel had an influence on 1960's fashion as well. The use of "modern" materials such as plastics and shiny metallic fabrics dominated the high fashion scene for a time. Hippie style was in fashion in the 60s. The Hippie movement favored relaxed, comfortable and natural clothing styles. They wore simple clothes, blue jeans, open sandals, and grew their hair very long. Their motto was “Make love, not war”.

P5: In the late 1960s and early 70s the “flower power” style was in. Women were loose maxi – skirts. Men wore jeans and brightly colored shirts or T-shirts. Clothes were very colorful. Very long hair and beards were more common for men and women. In the 70s young people used to wear miniskirts, jeans and platform-shoes. In those days it was in fashion to have long hair with lots of colourful threads in it. Young people loved wearing lots of rings and bracelets. Besides, girls didn’t wear tightly waist dresses. From the mid 70s young people were fond of punk style. Punk music was at the top of hit parade and the punk look became high fashion. Punk fashion started their style from Vivienne Westwood designs. Punk fashion was in the clothing, hairstyles, jewelry. Punks had strange shape of their hair. The 80s brought teenagers with punk hair styles in red, blue, purple and green and brightly colored make up.

Teacher: Most of you try to follow up-to-date fashion. Have a look at these modern clothes. Do you like them? I think teenagers prefer sport style to feel comfortable in any place. They don’t like formal clothes.

America has created its own type of clothing, which is now popular all over the world. The best invention is jeans, which have become an icon of American culture.

P1: Blue jeans were a by-product of the Gold Rush. The man, who invented jeans Levi Strauss, emigrated from Germany to San Francisco in 1850. Levi was 20years old and he decided to sell clothes to the miners in California. When he was told that durable trousers were the most needed item of clothing, Levi began making jeans of heavy tent canvas. Levi’s jeans were an immediate success. Soon he bought a fabric that was softer then canvas from Nimes a city in France. The miners liked this fabric. They called it “denim”. Strauss dyed the denim blue. Today the company he started is known all over the world.

P2: The next invention is T-shirts. They started off as underwear. During the First World War European soldiers wore them underneath their uniforms to keep warm. American troops copied the idea and started calling them “T-shirts” because of their T shape. In the mid 50s actor James Dean and rock star Elvis Presley shocked the world by wearing their T-shirts on TV. It was too much for young people to ignore. Everyone wanted to look like James Dean and Elvis Presley. Today T-shirts are worn by babies, kids, teenagers, adults.

Teacher: What is good for your feet?

P3: Trainers, of course. The most popular trainer companies in Britain are Nike, Reebok, LA Bear, Puma and Hi-tech. Now, with new technologies, trainers are stronger, lighter, and more comfortable. They help you with your sport.

Teacher: Let’s talk about high fashion. (In French it is Haute couture) What fashion designers do you know?

P4: Mary Quant was born in 1934. When she was young, there were no teenage fashions. Young women were dressed like grown-ups or little girls. At thirteen, she designed her own school uniform. She wore short dresses and long socks. After school, Mary went to Goldsmith's College in London}, She didn't enter the College but she met her future husband, Alexander Plunkett-Green. Like Mary he wore unusual clothes, such as purple velvet trousers and pajamas jackets.

Mary Quant opened Bazaar in 1955 on the King’s Road, one of the first London boutiques. It became the social centre for the so-called Chelsea Set, a bohemian crowd of trend-setters, writers and artists. It was called Bazaar. Mary designed all the clothes and made them on her old sewing machine.

The 1960s are often called the "Swinging Sixties". During these years Mary's designs became very popular. Everyone loved her mini-skirts and coloured tights. Thanks to Mary, London became the fashion capital of the world.

Mary's fashion shows differed a lot from what they had been before. Mary's models didn't walk — they danced to pop music.

Soon Mary's clothes became popular in America too.

In 1966, Mary was awarded the O.B.E. (a special medal given by the Queen).

Later on Mary started her own cosmetics company. She designed smart black, white and silver packagings for it, with the Quant daisy symbol that is still the same today.

Today, Mary's business is worth 100 million pounds. She is still designing — not just clothes, but also a perfume called "Havoc" and some other things.

She has now opened the Mary Quant Colour Shop in London's Carnaby Street.

In addition to the miniskirt she popularised white detachable collars for dresses, knee-high boots, patent plastic, kohl eyeliner, the Sassoon bob, skinny-rib sweaters and pinafore dresses.

P5: Vivienne Westwood is a British fashion designer and businesswoman, largely responsible for bringing modern punk and new wave tendency into fashions.

P6: Valentin Yudashkin. This man has got international recognition in the haute couture world. His name is Valentin. In one of his press releases he said about his roots: “I am terribly Russian. I am constantly trying to make the beauty of Russian culture, the Russian soul is known through my creations”. He was born near Moscow in 1963. In Russia he showed his first collection in 1987. In 1991 he began doing haute couture runway shows in Paris. His first Paris collection was called “Faberge” (1991). This was followed by “Music” (1992), “Still Life” (1993), “Frescos” (1994), “Catherine the Great” (1994) and “Ballet” (1995). The collection entitled “Bridges of Paradise” is one of the collections created in the end of the 20th century. Many of his collections were inspired by the music of Tchaikovsky, Rakhmaninov, Glinka. Nearly all his life he has been studying the Russian costume. He opens his couture house in Moscow in 1993. His clients are mainly from the theatre and music world, businessmen and scientists. In 1997 Yudashkin became the member of the French fashion governing body. He said: “I am Russian, but the capital of fashion is Paris”. [5]

Teacher: It’s important to remember people, who present, demonstrate the latest fashion styles in clothes – fashion models.

P1: Claudia Schiffer is a very successful German supermodel. She has appeared on the covers and fashion pages of all major fashion magazines and one of the faces of Chanel.

Not only is Claudia a professional model, but she is also a very successful businesswoman. She has her own fitness video and is a partner in the chain of “Fashion Cafes”. She is very generous, spending a lot of her time working with various charity organizations helping children in need. [3]

P2: Cindy Crawford had to start working to help her mother get by. One day a photographer took some photos of Cindy and promised to find her a job as a model in Chicago. He kept his promise and helped launch her incredibly successful modeling career.

Apart from modeling, Cindy does a lot of other things. She starred in a film, released several exercise videos for women. Because of her brother’s death, she generously donates money to medical research on leukemia and for children suffering from this terrible illness.

4. Развитие навыков чтения.

Teacher: Let’s go on to the items of fashion - to clothes. Imagine that a fashion show is being held.

Firstly look attentively at the pictures, then read the presenter’s commentary and choose the correct item. (Приложение 6) [3]

5. Тренировка навыков аудирования.

3) Отработка идиоматических выражений, связанные с одеждой.

Look at these idioms.

You remember that idioms are expression which have a meaning that is not obvious from the individual words.

Your task is to match these idioms with their definitions [8]:

1) fit like a glove (быть как раз, впору, полностью подходить) be certain

2) laugh up one’s sleeve (смеяться исподтишка) to live on less money than usual

3) bet one’s boots (кляться, быть готовым поспорить) fit perfectly

4) hit (somebody) below the belt (ударить ниже пояса, нанести предательский удар) in another person’s place or position

5) be in (someone) shoes (на чьем-либо месте) be secretly inwardly amused

6) tighten one’s belt (затягивать пояс потуже, жить более экономно) do smth in an unfair or cowardly way

Complete the sentences using the idioms. Change the word form if necessary:

1. The war continued and we all had to _____________ . (tighten our belts)

2. The news about John’s refusal to participate in the business____ Nick ___________ (hit Nick below the belt)

3. And he felt that they were____________________, or pitying him, or tolerating him. (laughing at him up their sleeves)

6. I know a lot of people who would give everything___________(to be in your shoes).

7. Look what you’ve done! I wouldn’t like to ___________ when mother gets home. (be in your shoes)

8. Исполнение песни.

Teacher: At the end of the lesson I want you to transfer from our days to 60s and remember one of the most famous songs of those days. The song "Dedicated Follower of Fashion" was extremely popular in the mid-60s. Then fashion in Britain was extremely daring and outrageous, driven by the youth-oriented culture. To make it easier to plunge you into the atmosphere of that time I want to show you a documentary where you can see the most fashionable street in London – Carnaby Street, a Mecca of dandies of the 60s. It was there where the first fashionable shops of London appeared, where Mary Quant opened her first fashion boutique.

"Dedicated Follower of Fashion" is a single by British band The Kinks. This song makes fun of the contemporary British fashion. It is some kind of satire. Firstly, listen to the song and fill in the missing words. (Приложение 2, Приложение 7). [1, 2]

9. Подведение итогов урока.

Teacher: It’s time to finish our lesson. Today’s lesson was devoted to fashion. You understand that in someone’s opinion, fashion is a complete waste of time, money and resources. The others think that the world would be a boring place without such change. The best choice I think is the reasonable attitude to fashion.

It’s important to know exactly what sort of clothes you should wear in this or that situation. Then you will be attractive and well – mannered. We shouldn’t forget that an official style is normal at work, at school or college on the one hand and high fashion is desirable at the parties on the other hand.

If you like sport suits it doesn’t mean that you should wear them at school. Try to put them on for your rest time or when you go in for sport. Remember that “Good clothes open all doors”.

Thank you for your work. It was very interesting to listen to your points of view. Your marks for the lesson are following. The lesson is over. Good-bye.
