Christmas Day
Everyone knows Christmas Day is a public holiday. It is celebrated on December 25 to honour the birth of Jesus Christ, the central figure of Christianity. Families usually spend the day opening their presents which are often piled around the Christmas tree decorated with a star on the top of it, coloured lights, balls and ornaments. They eat and drink together. The most important meal is Christmas dinner. At the start of the meal, British people often pull a cracker containing a small toy or a joke.
In Britain and countries influenced by its traditions, a typical Christmas meal includes turkey or goose, meat, gravy, potatoes, vegetables. Special desserts prepared on holiday are Christmas pudding and fruit cake. Christmas pudding is almost black as a result of the dark sugar and plum in most recipes, and a long cooking time. The mixture can be soaked with the juice of citrus fruits, and often covered with burning brandy and other alcohol. Christmas cake is also included in holiday meals. It is a kind of fruitcake served at Christmas time in the UK. Having a covering of icing, a Christmas cake may be light or dark, round and square in shape, filled with a lot of dried fruit. If a Christmas cake is covered with icing, it is quite common for it but one can see the following decorations – models of houses, fir trees or Santa Claus.
The day after Christmas is Boxing Day, which is also St. Stephen's Day, a religious holiday traditionally celebrated on 26 December. In Britain, Boxing Day is mostly known as a shopping holiday. It is a time when shops have special sales where things can be bought cheaply. There is also a tradition to hold a full programme of football and Rugby matches on Boxing Day. As a rule, matches on Boxing Day are played against local rivals so teams and their fans do not have to travel a long distance to another place on the day after Christmas Day. It also makes the day an important one in the sporting calendar.
