T: At our previous English lessons we said that travelling is very often an important part of people’s life. There are many ways of travelling that attract a lot of tourists. And today I want you to elaborate upon this idea and prove this statement.
You may use the key words cards which I am sure will give you an idea and a good opportunity to practise your language skills. Will you look through the key words of Card 1 I am going to give you?
Well, have you scanned the words and the expressions which are familiar to you? I suppose you have, haven’t you? So, it’s time for us to start the conversation. First hоwever I want you to ask each other questions about travelling.

T: Ask your classmates if people’s life is really impossible without
travelling.
P1: Is people’s life really impossible without travelling?
P2: I think people’s life is sometimes really impossible without
travelling.
T: Ask your classmates why many people travel.
P2: Why do a lot of people travel?
P3: There are different reasons for that, I believe. Some of them travel
for pleasure and there are people who go on a business trip.
T: Ask your classmates what ways of travelling they know.
P3: What ways of travelling do you know?
P4: Actually there are a lot of ways of travelling which anyone may
choose. People may travel by air, by railway, by sea, by road and certainly on foot.
T: Ask your classmates which way of travelling the fastest one is.
P4: Which way of travelling is the fastest one?
P5: The fastest way of travelling is of course that one by plane.
T: Ask your classmates about advantages and disadvantages of travelling
by plane.
P5: What can you say about the advantages and disadvantages of travelling
by air?
P6: No doubt it’s actually rather pleasant to travel by air because it
is the most convenient way of travelling but on the other hand it is also the most
expensive way of travelling and there are many people who can’t afford it.
T: Ask your classmates if travelling by train has its advantages.
P6: What about the advantages of travelling by train? Are there any?
P7: I think speed, comfort and safety in comfortable seats of the
sleeping cars are the main advantages of modern trains. All this makes the longest journey
enjoyable. And besides travelling by train isn’t as expensive as by plane. So many more
people prefer trains to other means of transport.
T: Good. Thank you. But now ask your classmates about travelling by sea.
P7: Is travelling by sea popular too?
P8: Yes, travelling by ship is also popular with many tourists, who are
happy to go on a two- or three-week cruise to enjoy a lot of different places of interest
in their own country.
T: What about travelling by car? Ask your friends why this way of
transport is also very popular.
P8: Why is travelling by car very popular too?
P9: This way of transport I think is also very popular because it’s
very convenient. You needn’t to reserve tour tickets and you have an opportunity to stop
wherever you wish. You may also spend at any place as much time as you like and have a
good time.
T: All right. But there is one more way of having a good time. It’s
hiking. Ask your friends what is good about hiking.
P9: What is good about hiking? Why do many young people prefer it?
P10: It’s rather pleasant to feel nature every day. That’s why hiking
is very popular with many young people who enjoy the countryside. It is really romantic to
live in tents on the sea shore or in the forest. And besides it’s so nice to breathe in
fresh air and enjoy the sun all day long.
T: What about sports activities people can be involved in when they are
on a hiking trip?
P9: Playing sports is of course one of the most useful activities many
young people are involved in when they are on a hiking trip. But enjoying the sunset and
returning home sunburnt and full of impressions are enjoyable for everybody.
T: Thank you, boys and girls. I’m pleased with your questions and
answers about travelling.
T: Thank you, boys and girls. I’m pleased with your questions and answers about travelling. But you see there are different points of view upon it. And I want you to learn how to explain various opinions upon the problem. Imagine you don’t like travelling. More than that, you dislike travelling abroad. So try to express your negative attitude towards it. Card 2 will help you. You know all of these words, don’t you? So try to use them.

Arguments against tourism abroad
You don’t need
You don’t have

You can
|
T: With the help of these key words try to give reasons and explain why you are against travelling abroad. Don’t forget your colloquial vocabulary. So consult the list of the words given in Card 3 too. Who wants to be the first to speak? Do, please.
Colloquial vocabulary to use | ||
– First, … – Second, … – Third, … – Besides, … – More than that … |
– What is more … – That’s why … – By the way, … – On the one hand … – On the other hand … |
– I agree with the view that … – I disagree with the view that – I’d like to add that … – May I put in a word? – I for one think that … |
P: May I put in a word? Actually there are a lot of interesting places
to visit in our own country. That’s why I for one think there is no need travelling
abroad.
P: As for me I agree with this point of view. And I think it’s better
to spend your holidays at home. And so you will never need to buy or to reserve tickets
and think of timetables or to carry heavy suitcases.
P: More than that you don’t have to wait at airports and railway
stations or to think of rucksacks and suitcases. The only thing you can do is to speak
your own language and to choose your favourite food.
P: I’d like to add that travelling abroad makes your relatives and
friends wait for you and worry. But if you don’t go abroad they are always near you.
P: By the way, I should say that a lot of places are polluted and become
dangerous for people’s health. So I suppose there is no use going abroad.
T: I see. And of course this conversation “against travelling
abroad” was certainly a kind of a joke. No doubt that actually I am sure all of you
deep in heart have a wish to travel somewhere one day. There are a lot of interesting
places to see you know. As for the knowledge of the English language it can help you to
visit many English-speaking countries. Britain is among them. So now I want you “to
change your mind” and say a few words in favour of travelling abroad. The key words of Card
4 will help you. So ask each other what is good about travelling abroad. Don’t
forget to use your colloquial vocabulary of Card 3. Who wants to start?
TRAVELLING ABROAD |
|
Arguments in favour of going abroad – to discover
new places in other countries it’s wonderful |
– can help to improve the knowledge of foreign languages travelling |
P: I do. I disagree with the view that travelling abroad is of no use.
First, I should say that it’s wonderful to discover new places in other countries when
you go abroad. Second, travelling abroad is a part of people’s education.
P: And third, travelling teaches people about art and culture and to be
understanding. Besides travelling broadens the mind and helps people to relax sometimes
after their hard work.
P: May I join the conversation? Travelling abroad can help people
practise speaking foreign languages, English for example. Tourists often make friends with
interesting people abroad. This can also help them to improve their knowledge of foreign
languages.
T: I’d like to say that English you are learning at school is of course
one of your school subjects. But the problem is wider. I want each of you to accept
English first of all as a means of communication which makes you learn more about other
countries, their traditions and customs. And this adds more to intercultural dialogue,
doesn’t it?
P: It does. And on the other hand due to English for example and other
foreign languages many people also receive a good opportunity to go sightseeing abroad.
And this also adds to people’s friendship and understanding.
T: You are right. And at our today’s English lesson I’d like to offer
you to make a tour, to be more exact a virtual tour abroad. Are you interested to know
what country it will be?
P: What country will it be?
T: Certainly Britain and its capital. At our previous English lessons we
have already spoken about London and its historical places of interest. And before going
to the capital of the UK I want to see how well you know the names of the most famous
London sights. Let us quickly read them for us to remember them better. Card 5
will help us to do it.
T: Thank you, boys and girls. Now we may start our virtual excursion along the streets of London. First, however, I’d like to see if you really remember some of the historical places of interest of this city. I want you to scan Card 6 and choose the correct answer about some historical London sights. Do, please.
