Try to guess what is it? Of course, it is reading. You know that reading is very important. Nowadays it is almost impossible to imagine our life without books.

– Look at the blackboard, please. Here you can see some proverbs about the importance of reading. What do they mean? (Чтение и объяснение значимости чтения в жизни людей)

-Yes, you right. All they mean that only by reading a person can learn to think and feel. Books influence our life greatly.

– Now I want to invite you in the past. Let’s remember something from the history of books. Can you answer …..?

  1. What can you say about the books in ancient times? (In ancient times books were written by hand. It took a lot of time to write a book with a pen.)
  2. What about the number of books? (The number of books was small.)
  3. What event changed the situation? (The invention of printing changed a lot in history, in the development of culture, literature and art.)
  4. Do you know who the first English printer was? Do you want to know?

– I think, you do. Now I am going to read you a story about the first English printer William Caxton. Listen to me carefully and then we’ll see how much you have understood. I’ll read it only once.

II. Аудирование текста.

William Caxton

William Caxton is the first English printer. He was born in Kent in 1422. His father was a farmer. William did not want to become a farmer like his father. So his father sent him to London. He worked in an office which traded with different countries. William liked to read books which were printed in Europe.

When William Caxton was 30, after his master’s death he started his own business in Belgium. In 1471 he left his business and began to translate French books into English. He became interested in printing and at last he learned it. William wanted to have his own press one day and he did.

In 1476 he brought his printing-press to London. Printing was something new at that time and most people thought that it was the work of devil. Some of the people wanted to break his press. Caxton printed his first book in 1477. It was the first book printed in the English language. The book was Caxton’s translation of the French “Tales of Troy”.

William Caxton printed about 80 books. He translated 31 books from French. Caxton died in 1491.

Due to these great men today we have an opportunity to read books, different kinds of books.

V. Аудирование текстов о разных книжных жанрах.

– Once a wide man said,” Life without books is a tree without leaves.”

– How can you explain his words?

– Does our life look happy without books?

– Is a tree rich without leaves?

– Our life without books is as boring and gloomy as a tree without leaves in autumn, isn’t it?

– I am sure you don’t want to have boring life. So help me now to grow our “book-tree” and our life will be happy and rich as our tree with leaves.

– Now let’s have a guessing game. Listen to the beginnings of different kinds of stories and try to guess what story it is. Then you should come to the blackboard, find a leaf with the word and put it on our book-tree. So let’s begin. (Учащиеся угадывают книжные жанры и прикрепляют листки на дерево, на листках прикреплены названия жанров)

1. It was a dark and foggy night. We drove and drove. At midnight, just as we thought we were lost, we saw a light behind some trees. As we got nearer, we could see a house. It looked deserted, abandoned. We knocked on the heavy, wooden door. It opened slowly. A tall man dressed entirely in black stood there. “Good evening”, he said in a slow, deep voice. “I’ve been expecting you”. (Horror)

2. We were travelling through deep space at the speed of light. Suddenly, the spaceship slowed down and immediately the system came into view. A bright star with 20 or more planets. One of these would be our new home, five light years from our own galaxy. (Science-fiction)

3. The man lay on her ground next to a white van. There was no doubt. He was dead. I quickly looked in the pockets of his jacket– some money, a handkerchief and a theatre ticket with a Chicago phone number written on it. Three murders in three weeks and the victims all killed in the same way. (Detective)

4. Once upon a time, long time ago, there lived a beautiful princess. She was an only child and her father and mother, the king and queen, lived her very much. One day an old woman came to the castle. When she saw the princess she smiled and laughed in a strange and terrible way.(fairy-tale)

5. Which books help children study? (Encyclopedia, dictionary, reference, almanac)

– Look at the tree. Isn’t it beautiful? I believe your life with books is as beautiful as this tree.

VI. Монологическая речь по теме «Книги».

– There are different kinds of books. What books do you like to read? What is your favourite witer? Who wants to tell us about him or her?

(Выступление учащегося по теме «Роль книг, мой любимый автор и его книга»)

Books play an important role in our life. They are our teachers, friends and advisers. There are a lot of famous writes in the world, but my favorite one is Charlotte Bronte. She was a famous English writer. She was born into a poor family. There were 6 children in it. Their mother died when Charlotte was a small girl. The girls were sent to a school for poor children. Charlotte’s two sisters died in that school. Later she described the school in her novel “Jane Eyre”. It was published in1847 and made the writer famous. The book is about a small girl Jane by name. She was ten and had neither a mother nor a father. She lived in the family of her uncle Mr. Reed. When her uncle died, Jane stayed in the family. Mrs. Reed had 3 children and was not kind to Jane and her children beat the girl. One day Mrs. Reed decided to send Jane to a school for poor girls. She asked Mr. Brocklehurst, one of the organizers of the school, to come to her house. He came and asked to see Jane.

VII. Инсценировка.

Действующие лица: JaneEyre, Mrs. ReedandMr.Brocklehurst (в кресле сидит миссис Рид. Входит мистер Броклхест, Джейн эйр стоит между ними, понурив голову).

Mrs. Reed: This is the little girl I spoke to you about.

Mr. Br.: She is small. How old is she?

Mrs. R: 10 years.

Mr.Br.: Your name, little girl?

Jane: Kane Eyre, sir.

Mr.Br.: Well, Jane Eyre, and are you a good girl?

Mrs. R.: It is better to say nothing about it, Mr. Br.

Mr.Br.: That is too bad. I must talk to her. Come here, Jane Eyre. Do you read the Bible?

Jane: Sometimes.

Mr.B.: Is it interesting?

Jane: No, sir.

Mr.Br.: This shows that you are a bad girl.

Mrs. Reed.: Mr. Br., I think I told you in my letter that she is not a good child. If you take her to Lowood School, tell her teachers what kind of girl she is.

Mr.Br.: I will speak to the teachers.

Mrs.Reed: She will stay at the school during her holidays that will be best for her.

Mr.Br.: You are right.

Mrs. Reed: So, I may be sure that you will receive her at Lowood School, Mr. Br? I will send her there very soon.

Mr.Br.: Very well. I’ll write to the teachers and tell them that they will have a new girl.

Mrs. Reed: Good-bye, Mr. Br.

Jane: Good-bye, sir.

Jane: I am happy that you are not my aunt. I’ll never call you aunt again as long as I live. I’ll never come to see you when I am grown up: and if anyone asks me how I liked you, I’ll say that you are a bad woman.

– Three days passed. Then very early in the morning Jane left the house and never went back again. And new life began for her at Lowood School for poor girls and it was not happy.

– Thank you very much for your acting. It was perfect. Charlotte was a famous writer, wrote novels. And what about poetry and poems? Do you like to recite poems? Who wants to recite his favorite poem?

(Один из учащихся читает наизусть слова из песни “Yesterday”)

VIII. Чтение текста и ответы на вопросы.

– I am sure you know this well-known song of a famous English group “The Beatles”. Today at our lesson we have a lot of photos of them and you can see them on the blackboard. It is widely known that the name of the group is a combination of two words: to beat and a beetle.

The Beatles

1963 went down in the history as the year of “The Beatles”. All popular magazines and newspapers wrote many different articles about group and made them famous. The group was first performed in 1959. It included John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, whose real name was Richard Starkey. They came from Liverpool, a town in the north of England.

The group changed pop music forever. From their first single “Love me do” in 1962, people recognized something more tuneful, more exciting. At first, the group performed music that was influenced by American rock’n’roll. However, catchy melodies became popular. Besides, they looked more attractive than anyone else. They gave concerts in Germany and America where they were even greater success. Their second single “Please, please me” became number one in March 1963.

After 1965 the Beatles worked mostly on films and albums (long-playing records). They created successful records and interesting films. The Beatles were very popular especially with youth. “The Beatlemania” swept Britain and soon America. In 1970 the group split up. In October 1982, “Love me do” entered the British Hit Parade and was again in the Top Ten. “The Beatles” with their style of singing is still one of the most popular groups in the world.
