Цели урока:

  • Учебные: Обобщение и систематизация материала по темам “How Different the World Is!” “Western Democracies. Are They Democratic?”Скрытый контроль уровня сформированности речевых умений.
  • Развивающая: Развитие творческих способностей учащихся; развитие способности к сравнению, формулированию выводов из полученной информации.
  • Образовательная: Формирование навыков работы с разными источниками информации, в том числе с Интернетом.
  • Воспитательная: Воспитание уважительного отношения к другой культуре, более глубокое осознание своей культуры через контекст культуры англоязычных стран.

Оборудование урока: Мультимедийный проектор, экран, компьютер, презентация по теме урока, слайд-проекты учащихся, опорные карточки для ведения направляемого диалога, карточки для рефлексии.

Ход урока

I. Организационно-психологический момент

Teacher: Good day! I am happy to see you! Everything is interconnected in this world.

When you here the word it brings to your mind certain associations. What do you imagine when you hear the word “forest”, for example?

Pupil 1: I imagine a beautiful green landscape: trees, grass and flowers.

Pupil 2: I here birds' singing.

Teacher: You see, “trees”, “birds”, “animals” and “grass” are the characteristic features of “forest”.

Teacher: If we take a nation or a country there will be also typical options which characterize only this nation and this country. Now look at the screen, please, and tell me what countries these words are associated with? While answering use your cards number 1 (Приложение 2).

Teacher: I suppose that you are ready to tell me the topic of our lesson.

Pupil 1: I think that the topic of our lesson is 'How Different the World Is!'

Teacher: You are right. Today we are going to talk about varieties of the world where we live. And the topic of our lesson is “How Different the World Is!” From the very beginning of the academic year we have been working on the topics “How Different the World Is!” and “Western Democracies. Are They Democratic?” Some of you have prepared the projects. Now you have an opportunity to present them.

We will have to decide which project is the most interesting. There are the cards on your desks. Look at them and fill in while listening to the presentations of the projects, please. As for these cards, they are for those who present their projects (Приложение 3).

Teacher: Well, let's start our work and try to guess what country we are discussing first of all

(Приложение 2).

Pupil 2: That's exactly what I wanted to say. I know that three-quarters of the country are washed by ocean.

Teacher: You are quite right. And I'd like to bring your attention to a research project on the United States of America.

Teacher: Do you know this country? Look at the screen, please. Can you explainthese facts with the help of the following words: because, thanks to (the fact that), due to, so, that's why.

Pupil 2: Many people live far away from towns in the outback, that's why they send a radio message to the flying doctor service.

Teacher: So, different landscapes – different countries. Could you tell me if you would like to live in any of English-speaking countries? Give your arguments (Приложение 2).

Teacher: Do you like the place where you live? Why is it so?

Teacher: Well done! We have just discussed the geography of the USA and Australia. But it is not full information about country. There is one more and rather important component. I mean a political system, a state. Can we live outside the state?

Our life depends on the political system of the country where we live. Government policy is the theme of many aphorisms. Look at the screen, read these aphorisms, and try to find the correct translation.

  1. Every nation has the government that it deserves! (J.D. Maistre)
  2. The best government is that which governs most! (J.O'Sullvans)
  3. The whole art of government consists in being honest! (T. Jefferson)

Teacher: We have listened to the girls, and now I'll give you two minutes to finish your work with the cards. Please be impartial.

Teacher: We shall continue our talk. In my opinion, the policy of the state depends on the leader of the state. This man should have special qualities. Look at the screen and choose only the positive ones.

Sociable (общительный), patient (терпеливый), honest (честный), power-loving (властолюбивый), skilful (умелый), gifted (одаренный), loyal (верный), prudent (осторожный, благоразумный), risky (рисковый)), hypocritical (лицемерный), self-reliant (уверенный в себе), bossy (надменный), sly (хитрый), ruthless (безжалостный).

Teacher: Let's compare our points of view and the ideas of the medieval author Niccolo Machiavelli. (Упр. 2, стр. 55) Be ready to answer my questions:

  1. Do you think his opinion differs from the modern one?
  2. What traits of character necessary for a politician correspond to the ideas of Niccolo Machiavelli?
  • It is important for a prince to know how to do wrong, and to make use of it if necessary (sly).
  • It is unnecessary for a prince to have all the good qualities but it is very necessary to appear to have them (hypocritical, sly).
  • It is necessary for a prince to have a mind ready to turn itself according to the winds of fortune (prudent, loyal).
  • And here it should be mentioned that either good works or bad ones can produce hatred, therefore a prince who wishes to keep his state very often has to do evil (ruthless).
  • A prince whose actions do not accord with the times will not be successful (risky).
