IV. Activity 2. Чтение текста о лимериках.

Teacher: Read the text and be ready to answer my questions.

A lot of English poets and writers wrote comic and curious verses named ‘limericks’. Whenever something funny or unusual happens, someone somewhere in the world comes up with a funny verse about it. In Britain it is a verse named a ‘limerick’ or ‘nonsense verse’. Limericks are known as poetry for the common man (as well as chastushkas in Russia). The origin of limericks is traditionally connected with the Irish town of Limerick. People sang them at table during parties. All those songs finished with the invitation to visit Limerick!

The most famous author of limericks is Edward Lear. Edward Lear was a famous English poet. He made limericks popular in the 19th century. He never called his poems limericks, but ‘poems of nonsense’.

In 1846 he published his first “Book of Nonsense”. In this book you’ll find limericks filled with crazy fantasy. In Lear’s book there were 72 limericks with his own illustrations.

Teacher: Answer the questions: What kind of a verse is a limerick? (funny, humorous, unusual) What comic verses in Russian do you know? (chastushkas) Who is the most famous writer of limericks? (Edward Lear) How did he call his limericks? (poems of nonsense) – слайды 5-12.

V. Activity 3. Задания к лимерикам. (С использованием презентации – слайды 13, 14, 15).
