Вед1: I see that you are rather busy just now

Вед2: Yes, I've had a busy day. It may seem very foolish in your eyes, but really I don't know how you deduced it

Вед1: (усмехаясь) I know your habits, my dear Watson. When your trip is a short one you walk, and when it is a long one you hire a crew. As I see your boots are dirty, I am sure that you are at present busy enough to hire a crew

Вед2: Excellent!

Вед1: Elementary, my dear Watson!

Сделав небольшой поклон аудитории, ведущие продолжают:

Вед2: Dear Sherlock, let me, your best friend, introduce you to our audience.

Вед1: Of course, my dear Watson. Let's start with our respected author.

Among mystery writers, the most respected of all is Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. A Scottish physician who turned to writing, Arthur Conan Doyle thought he would be remembered for his historical novels. His fame, however, rests on the creation of his world famous detective Sherlock Holmes.

Слайд 3 (Ведущий 1)

Arthur Conan Doyle was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, on May 22, 1859. His parents were Irish Roman Catholics, and he received his early education in a Jesuit school. Later he got a medical degree at Edinburgh University. He started practice as a family physician. His income was so small that he began writing stories to make ends meet. Doyle took part in the Boer War, in which he served at a field hospital. He was married twice. The death of his son Kingsley in World War I intensified Doyle's interest in psychic phenomena; in his later years he wrote and lectured on spiritualism. He died in July 1930.

Слайд 4 (Ведущий 2)

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote 4 novels and 56 short stories about Sherlock Holmes. His first one "A study in Scarlet" was published in 1887. Soon Holmes became so popular that Doyle began writing full time

Слайд 5 (Ведущий 1)

"The Sign of the Four", the second Holmes novel , has a complex plot involving service in East India Company, the Indian Rebellion , a stolen treasure, and a secret pact among four convicts and two corrupt prison guards.

Слайд 6 (Ведущий 2)

The author eventually became bored with Holmes and "killed" him. But in response to readers' protests, Doyle wrote his next story "The final problem" explaining how the detective had miraculously survived. Stories dealing with Holmes continued to appear almost to the end of Doyle's life. Their plots were always well paced and thrilling.

Слайд 7 (Ведущий 1)

In all stories, Sherlock Holmes is described as an extraordinary man showing an ability to solve crimes through clever observation and deduction. He draws amazing conclusions from details. Doyle said he modeled Holmes after one of his teachers in Edinburgh Dr. Bell, who could, for example, glance at a corpse and deduce that the person had been a left-handed shoemaker.

Слайд 8 (Ведущий 2)

His other features deerstalker cap, violin playing, eccentric bachelor lifestyle-were the invention of sheer genius. Holmes is assisted by his friend Dr. John Watson, who records most of his cases. The two men live in London at 221B Baker Street.

Слайд 9 (Ведущий 1)

My favorite story is "The Hound of the Baskervilles". It is the classic detective chiller. The Baskerville family is haunted by a phantom beast 'with blazing eyes and dripping jaws'.

Слайд 10 (Ведущий 1)

Now the hound seems to be stalking young Sir Henry, the new master of the Baskerville estate. Is this the family curse? Or is Sir Henry the victim of a vile murderer? Only Sherlock Holmes can solve this devilish affair.

Слайд 11 (Ведущий 2)

As for me I'd like to mention "The Man with the Twisted Lip". Mr. Neville St. Clair, a respectable country businessman, has disappeared. Mrs. St. Clair is quite sure that she saw her husband at a second-floor window in one house near the docks. He withdrew into the window immediately, and she is sure that there was something wrong.

Слайд 12 (Ведущий 2)

Holmes's search for Neville St. Clair has led him to the opium dens, where the 'disappearance' of many souls is a fact of life. Is Mr St. Clair dead or alive? Will Holmes be able to solve the mystery of his disappearance?

Слайд 13 (Ведущий 1)

One more interesting fact about this detective is that The Sherlock Holmes Museum in London is the first Museum in the world to be dedicated to a fictional character. It opened in 1990 and is situated in Baker Street. Even today, the actual street address is 239 Baker Street, and the museum uses the fictional 221B address only by special permission.

Слайд 14 (Ведущий 2)

In the famous study on the 1st floor Visitors can sit in Mr. Holmes's armchair. Doctor Watson's bedroom is on the 2nd floor. These rooms contain personal belongings and private papers of the great detective and a variety of exhibits from his published cases. The diary of Doctor Watson contains hand-written notes and extracts from the famous adventure of The Hound of the Baskervilles

Слайд 15 (Ведущий 1)

The Guinness World Records has consistently listed Sherlock Holmes as the "most portrayed movie character" with 75 actors playing the part in over 211 films.

Слайд 16 (Ведущий 2)

Between 1979 and 1986, Soviet television broadcast a series The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, starring Vasily Livanov as Holmes and Vitaly Solomin as Watson.

Слайд 17 (Ведущий 2)

Livanov's portrayal of Holmes is widely considered canonical and an actor received an OBE "Order of the British Empier" for this role. Holmes museum in London has the portrait of Livanov depicting Holmes himself.
