What is a map? Map – a drawing of an area of country, showing rivers, roads, mountains, towns, or any other information by means of signs. Each map contains a legend.

Особое внимание должно быть уделено работе с легендой.

Ключевой информацией для понимания карты является легенда.

Легенда – это основной и точный ключ к пониманию любого вида карты. Элементы легенды могут быть представлены различными средствами – вербальными, цифровыми, графическими, цветовыми, при помощи различных символов, шаблонов, а также их различными сочетаниями.

В процессе работы с легендой карты необходимо осуществить презентацию всех ее элементов. Здесь также важна языковая работа, то есть чтение географических названий, собственных имен, специальных географических терминов и т.п., что связано с видом карты, так как легенда карты уникальна и имеет свои особенности в каждом отдельном случае. Можно рекомендовать самостоятельную работу со словарем.

1. Legend: The reference area on a map that lists and explains the colours, symbols, line patterns, shadings, and annotation used on the map. The legend often includes the scale, origin, orientation, and other map information.
2. The legend of a map (also called the key) is a small table accompanying the map that explains the symbols that are used on the map.
3. Legend: The part of the drawn map explaining the meaning of the symbols used to code the depicted geographical elements.
4. Legend is a table on a map, chart, or the like, listing and explaining the symbols.
5. An explanatory table or list of the symbols appearing on a map or chart.
6. A map legend is the little box in the corner of the map. It contains icons to tell you what is a city and what the populations are.
   It also contains icons to help you figure out what is a interstate or county road.

You will also find a legend to assist you in figuring out mileage from one place to another. A map legend gives you information that includes: how many inches = 1 mile, what a dirt road looks like as compared to motorway, what a little picnic table symbol means, or what population range is represented by what size font (or letters. For example, a large city like Chicago will be spelled out in very large letters, but a small town like Buffalo, Montana will be printed very small, if it shows up at all!).
