Teacher: Good morning. Nice to meet you.
Pupils: Good morning. Nice to meet you too.
Teacher: Take your seats, please. Kids, today we are going to speak about one of the most expensive hobbies in the world, travelling. Am I right?
Pupils: Yes, you are.
Teacher: Thanks, but before starting our discussion let’s divide all pupils into two groups and let’s see if you know anything about travelling. Look at the screen, please and choose the right item.
Teacher:  Well done! Now let’s see have you ever been to different countries? Have you ever travelled?
Pupil 1: I have been to Egypt. I was there in 1998.
Pupil 2: I have been to France. It was excellent.
Pupil 3: I have been to Italy. I had a lot of fun.
Pupil 4: I have been to Scotland. My dream came true.
Teacher: OK. But there are a lot of countries which we haven’t visited yet. Last time I asked you to think about it. So the first group, what city are you going to visit?
Pupil (pupil from the first group): It’s a very small, but attractive city. It’s not far from London. Shakespeare was born there.
Pupil (pupil from the second group): OK, we know this place. It’s Stratford–upon-Avon.
Pupil (pupil from the first group): That’s true.
Teacher: (обращаясь к ученикам второй группы): And what places are you going to visit?
Pupil (pupil from the second group): It is also a small town not far from London. It’s one of the well-known university cities. It isn’t Cambridge.
Pupil (pupil from the first group): It’s Oxford.
Pupil (pupil from the second group): Right you are.
Teacher: How clever of you! But frankly speaking I don’t know if you can manage to do this. I mean to travel. What’s your first step?
Pupil: First, I’ll have o call to the travel agency. Shall I try?
Teacher: Why not?
Pupil 1: Alex, is that you? Ann is calling.
Pupil 2: Yes, Ann. It’s me. How are you dear?
Pupil 3: I am fine. I hope you are well too.
Pupil 2: Yes, Ann. Quite well, thanks.
Pupil 1: Alex, I am planning to visit Stratford in July and stay there for a couple of days. Could you send me some information about suitable accommodation?
Pupil 2: Certainly, Ann. What would you like to know?
Pupil 1: I would like to stay at some hotel that is not very expensive but not very far from the city centre either. Would you also find out what the price is and what is included in the price?
Pupil 2: Yes, Ann. But you shouldn’t bother about the location. Stratford is not a very big city. So the hotels are not very far from the city centre. You can walk or take a bus if it is located in the suburbs. But I would like you to tell me some particulars.
Pupil 1: Certainly. What are they?
Pupil 2: First of all, would you like an air-conditioned room? Should there be a bathroom?
Pupil 1: No, Alex. These things are not absolutely necessary. Could you find out what services the hotel provides for its guests?
Pupil 2: Right. And I will call you back at the end of the week.
Pupil 1: Wonderful. Thanks a lot. See you.
Pupil 2: See you soon dear.
Teacher: Not bad. And what about you?
Pupils: Let us see.
Pupil: Mrs. White, my friend and I are going to Oxford for two weeks. I hope we will have some free time and would gladly do the city. What would you recommend for us to see?
Pupil 2: Oxford is a beautiful city. The university gardens and the parks and fields around the river make its centre a surprisingly green place. If the weather is good, you can just walk through the narrow old streets between the university buildings.
Pupil 1: Don’t you know there is a Botanic Garden Oxford?
Pupil 2: There is. It is the oldest in Britain. It was laid in 1621 and is very beautiful.
Pupil 1: Are there any museums in Oxford?
Pupil 2: Yes. Oxford has some of Britain’s finest museums: the museum of the history of science and the university museum.
Pupil 1: Any modern shopping centers in Oxford?
Pupil 2: Yes. The old and the new are side by side in Oxford. You can visit modern shopping centers or the smaller shops in the old streets.
Pupil 1: Fine. Thanks a lot. I will call you later.
Pupil 2: You are welcome. See you.
Teacher: OK. But ladies and gentlemen, in order to travel you must know some rules .Let’s see what are they?
First rules for travelers.)
Teacher: Language. “Words are of course, the most powerful drug used by mankind” said Rudyard Kipling. Can you tell me anything about the use of it?
Pupil: Try and learn at least some minimum vocabulary to be able to show your politeness.
Pupil: Knowledge is power. A good knowledge of the language of the country will make the journey more agreeable.
Teacher: Fine. Now say people of what nationalities live in these countries and what languages they speak
The Chinese live in China. They speak Chinese.
Teacher: Thanks. Food. According to the saying of an ancient philosopher, one should eat to live, not live to eat. What about food?
Pupil: Have a good breakfast. Don’t ignore it. Dinner or supper can be more easily ignored.
Teacher: Kids, remember what food we associate with different countries.
Teacher: But children, some people believe in national stereotypes and associate certain qualities with certain nations. Do you know any national stereotypes?
Pupils:
1. The Italians are very good singers.
2. The Czech drink a lot of beer.
3. The Mexicans eat a lot of spicy food.
4. The Japanese go sightseeing all over the world and take pictures.
5. The German are very greedy and don’t like spending money.
6. The Americans can’t imagine their lives without driving a car.
7. The Greek love to welcome guests and give them lots of food.
Teacher: Don’t forget about your manners during your trips.
Pupil 1: Respect yourself by demonstrating the manners of a gentleman or a lady and then you will receive the respect of others.
Pupil 2: Good manners are a letter of recommendation.
Teacher: What about the time?
Pupil: I must tell you that it’s better to wait for extra 15 minutes than to miss your train or coach. Besides, everyone knows “First come, first served”.
Teacher: Must we pay attention to the climate?
Pupil 1: The traveler’s comfort depends on his dress. It must be suitable to the climate he is in.
Pupil: An umbrella is essential for any climate.
Pupil: Think about the comfort of your clothes and don’t pay too much attention to change in fashion.
Teacher: What can you tell me about the packing?
Pupil 1: See if every piece of luggage is properly labeled and that all labels previously used are removed.
Pupil 2: Pack your luggage neatly and come to the railway station or airport well in advance.
Pupil 3: Put the things you need during the journey in your handbag.
Teacher: Thank you very much. Now look at the screen, please and tell me some rules.
Pupil: Arrange if possible only one piece of luggage to look after.
Pupil: Remember travelling light is faster and much easier.
Teacher: Most people enjoy travelling. Some travel for pleasure, and some-on business, some travel light, some take a lot of luggage on their travels, journeys, voyages or trips.
Pupil: They may choose various means of travelling (transport) and go: by air, by land, by sea, by plane, by train, by boat, by car, by coarch, on horseback, on a bike, on foot.
Teacher: Now look at the screen. Why do these gentlemen choose this kind of transport?
(Ученики просматривают отрывок из английского кинофильма «Three men in a boat» по роману Дж.
Teacher: And now one more thing. Things that can spoil the impression of your journey.

  • Travel sickness (but you can take a medicine for it).
  • Heavy luggage (but you can hire a porter or use a trolley).
  • Talkative fellow passengers (but you can pretend that you are deaf).
  • Bad food (but you can always pack a couple of sandwiches just in case).
  • Bad weather (but suitable clothes can help you).

Pupil: Nothing can spoil your journey if you are happy.
Teacher: Thank you very much for our discussion. Let’s travel and let’s take a nice song with us.
