I. Организационный момент.

Teacher: Dear friends! The theme of the lesson is The USA. Today we have an unusual lesson: a lesson – project and we are going to summarize your knowledge about the USA as an English speaking country. I know that you have divided into groups and prepared projects on different topics using additional material. So the first group begins. Everybody should listen attentive to the speakers to be able to do a quiz at the end of the lesson. Good luck!

II.

P.1: Hello!

P.2: Hi! I haven’t seen you for ages. Where have you been all this time?

P.1: I was on an excursion to the USA and learnt much about the country.

P.2: Oh how interesting indeed! What can you tell us about this country?

P.1: The USA is a very large country. So it has several climate regions. The coldest regions are in the north and north-west where much snow falls in winter. The south has a subtropical climate. Hot winds blowing from the Gulf of Mexico often brings typhoons. The climate along the Pacific coast is much warmer than that of the Atlantic Coast. The region around the Great Lakes is known for its changeable weather. I see you have some books. What are they for?

P.3: I have been in the library preparing a report on the USA agriculture and industry. Look! They are original, printed in the USA.

P.2: You don’t say so! It’s very interesting, indeed.

P.3: I learnt that Chicago is one of the biggest industrial cities in the USA and the second largest one after New York. Philadelphia, near the east coast produces agricultural machines and locomotives. Light industry is highly developed here.

P.2: I see, and what about agriculture?

P.3: As far as I have read American agriculture produces more food than any other country. Much of it is exported. Fresh fruit and vegetables come all the year round from the southern regions especially Florida.

P.1: I’d like to add some words about the geography of this country. The USA is the fourth largest country in the world. It occupies southern part of North America and stretches from the Atlantic seaboard, across the central plains over the Rocky Mountains to the West Coast and then to the island of Hawaii. The USA contains also the Alaska. Look! Here they are on the map.

P.3: As far as I know, the total area of the country is about 9,5 ml square km. The USA borders on Canada, Mexico and Russia. If you look at the map you can see lowlands and mountains. The highest mountains are the Rocky Mountains and the Sierra Nevada The northern state of Minnesota is known as the land of 10000 lakes. The largest and the deepest are 5 Great Lakes on the border with Canada The largest rivers are the Mississippi, the Missouri, the Rio Grand and the Columbia. The Mississippi is the world’s third river after the Nile and the Amazon. The Missouri flows 6.400 km from the north to the Gulf of Mexico, which makes it one of the world’s longest waterways. The Mississippi has been called the “Father of waters”. There are 2 great rivers of the Pacific side: the Colorado in the south, and the Columbia, which rises in Canada and drains the north. Показ на каре, затем проходит по рядам и показывает виды ландшафта страны из оригинальных книг, выпущенных в США: “An Outline of American Geography”, “This is America”

– Teacher: I see you’ve learnt much and found very interesting facts about the USA. The books you’ve brought are rare and original. I suppose you’ve known more interesting and useful things from the books. May be pupils are eager to know some additional facts. Please, any questions?

P (group 2): Yes, I’d like to ask a question about heavy industry. We all know that the USA is a highly developed industrial country. It has much coal, doesn’t it?

P.3: Thank you for the question. Coal is found in many parts of the country. The state of Illinois is especially rich in coal. Coal is also mined in the state of Kansas.

P (group 3): And what about iron?

P.1: The USA has the first place in the world in the production of iron, oil and natural gas. Iron is mined near the Great Lakes and in some other places.

– Thank you.

P.1: We are going to present you our project. We are sure you will find it interesting and useful, as it contains much additional material about Washington, its sights, history and symbols of the country.

P.2: Dear friends you are invited to the excursion around Washington D.C. the capital of the USA. You welcome to watch the video, listen and memorize everything.(рассказ сопровождается видеофильмом)

P.3: Washington is on the left bank of the Potomac River. The city was named after the first president George Washington. We’ll start our excursion with the Capitol. It is situated on the Capitol Hill in the centre of the city. It is the tallest building in Washington. It is the most famous building in the United States because this is where laws are made. Look! There is a 19th foot bronze Statue of Freedom at the top of the dome. The Capitol is the seat of the US Congress.

P.4: That is the Lincoln Memorial, built in honor of Abraham Lincoln. The Memorial was built in the style of a classic Greek temple. It has 36 columns. It was built in honor of the 16th president of the USA. He wrote the Emancipation Proclamation which freed the blacks in the South from slavery. Inside the memorial is a huge statue of the former president. In 1888 George Washington led the American Army in many battles during the War of Independence. In honor of the first president of the USA the Washington Monument was built. And there you can see the Jefferson Memorial, built in honor of the third president of the USA. Inside is the 19-foot statue of Thomas Jefferson standing on a 6-foot pedestal. He wrote the Declaration of Independence

P.1: The White House is an important part of the capital of the USA. It is the place where the president and his family lives and works. It has 132 rooms. Visitors may tour the first floor rooms. This is the oldest public building in Washington D.C. There are 9 museums in Washington. Let me mention some of them. They are the National Gallery of Art, the American History Museum, the National Museum of Natural History, the Smithsonian museums. Here you can see the National Gallery of Art, opened in 1941. It has a lot of art collections of the great masters. Not far from it is the Library of Congress, the largest library in the United States. It contains more than 19 ml manuscripts. This is the picture of the Supreme Court, which is the seat of the most important judges in the country. They have to make sure that the president and the Congress follow the Constitution.

P.2: I’d like to tell you some words about American symbols. The state symbol of the country is the BALD-HEADED EAGLE with its wings spread in a white background. You are welcome to see it on the screen. The first Americans chose the eagle as the emblem to symbolize their power. The bald eagle actually isn’t really bald at all but white-headed. This bird lives only in the USA and Canada. In 1782 Congress selected the bald eagle as the emblem of the newly formed union to show the courage and might of the nation.

P.5: The American Flag is known as THE STARS AND STRIPES. It consists of 50 stars which represent 50 states. Thirteen red and white horizontal stripes (seven red and five white) stand for the original thirteen States which were united in 1776. The first flag was called The Grand Union Flag. It symbolized the flag of Great Britain with the thirteen stripes. It showed that the first states were British colonies. After the War of Independence all thirteen states became free and the flag changed. The British flag in the corner was replaced by stars. Every time a new state entered the Union, a star was added.

So now today’s flag shows the thirteen stripes for the original number of states in 1776 plus the 50 states which represents today’s total. You can see the American Flag in the offices, in the streets and squares in small towns and large cities. Americans are very proud of there flag.

Teacher: So you’ve heard the information about American sights and symbols. Is everything clear? Have you got any questions?

P. (group 1): You see, I’ve read that the Statue of Liberty is also a symbol of the USA, isn’t it?

P.2: Of course it is, but not the official one. The Statue of Liberty is on the Liberty Island in New York. It is one of the first thing people see when they come to the country by the sea. The fact is that this statue was given to America by France as the symbol of their friendship in 1884.

P.1: To understand the nation in whole we should its history, so you are welcome to listen to some interesting historical facts. More than 12 thousand years ago the first American Indians came to Alaska from Asia. In small groups they crossed a land bridge where Bering Strait now lies. This slow migration went on for 4000 years. From Alaska the Indians traveled to the south. Some of tribes stayed in North America, while others kept on moving to Central and South America. The migrants belonged to different tribes and groups of different civilization. Now there are about 200 separate Indian languages in North America.

P.2: People lived in small earth houses and grew their own food. They believed in many gods and thought their gods could bring them success in fishing, hunting and farming. They often had special ceremonies with dances and music before they went hunting or fishing. Their songs and poems are very important part of their traditions as they helped to keep their history alive. Another famous tradition of those days was smoking a pipe. Here it is.

P.3: When English colonists came to the New World on board the “Mayflower” in November 1620 the Native Americans met them friendly and helped them. When spring came people began to plant corn and maize. In autumn the harvest was very rich and people made a holiday. Indians brought some wild turkeys as a present. People thanked God for the harvest. Since that day Americans celebrate this day as a holiday called “Thanksgiving Day”. In 1775-1783 America fought against Great Britain for freedom and independence. They won and the Declaration of Independence was adopted by Congress in July, 4, 1776.Since then the 4th of July has become a great holiday.

P.1: Speaking about American Revolutionary War of Independence we must mention the first American president George Washington. He served 7 years as a Commander in Chief in the Army. In 1775 G. Washington was elected by the Congress to command the Army against the British Forces. He started to train solders. Soon they were able to win the British Forces.

In 1789 he became the first president of the USA and served 2 terms. Here at the table you can see the photos and names of all American presidents.

P.1: We are going to tell you about modern Americans, their way of life, their food, home, holidays. What is American food? The answer is that it is part Italian, part British, part German and Mexican. It depends on people that came to the USA from all over the world. When people came to live there they brought different cooking traditions. Most Americans now have a light breakfast instead of traditional eggs, bacon, toast, orange juice and coffee. Most Americans eat a balanced diet of meat, fish, vegetables, bread or cereals, fruit and diary. Most Americans prefer so called fast food. Here you can see what food they eat.

P.2: I’d like to tell you some words about their flats and houses. The majority of Americans live in apartments or individual houses. American homes have all modern facilities, central heating, hot and cold running water, inside toilets. Many of them have a garage for one or two cars, a big modern kitchen, a living room and a playroom for children/ Upstairs there may be two or more bedrooms and a bathroom. 70% of Americans buy their homes and 30% rent them from a landlord. The poorest Americans live in “public housing” apartments. Americans try to make their homes better and that is why they spend much time to buy furniture and other things to make their homes better.

P.3: There is one more thing we want to speak about. These are holidays. Some of them were already mentioned by our classmates, but there are other ones, for example Christmas and Halloween, which children love most of all. Halloween was brought from Ireland and Scotland. During their carnival children dress as witches and ghosts. They visit houses asking for candies: “Trick or treat”. If you give them sweets, nuts or cakes the go away, but if don’t they’ll play a trick on you. For example “Treat or treat” с этими словами ученик подходит к учителю и протягивает “trick or treat packet”, куда учитель кладет конфеты, так как не хочет, чтобы его разыграли.

P.4: Another great American holiday is Christmas on December, 25. Families come together to share their happiness, attend church and exchange gifts. Children hang up stockings near the fireplace to receive gifts from Santa Claus. Cities and towns sparkle with lights. Homes are decorated with Christmas trees. We want you to see some short films about all presidents and other holidays.

And now we’ll play a quiz game and see how attentive you were while listening to each other.

III. At home you will write a composition “What place I’d like to visit in the USA”.
