The Secretary of the Royal London scientific society (Приложение 1, слайд 1)
T.: Ladies & gentlemen! I would like to welcome you at the Royal London scientific society meeting. Our scientific society is one of the oldest & famous in the world. That’s why we are done the honour to define the outstanding discoveries of the world. Our experts should consider what discovery is of great significance.
II.
- активизировать употребление лексического материала, введенного на предыдущих уроках;
T.: To begin with, let’s look at the screen.
Try to explain the proverbs. You should be convincing.
“Experience is the mother of wisdom”. “Necessity is the mother of
the invention”
Well, thank you for your interpretation. Yes, you were right,
speaking about the inventions and explaining the reasons why they
appeared. New inventions always change the people’s ways of
living.
Just imagine the amount of inventions of the world. Time which
we live in is unusual. It is 2009 now. It’s the beginning of the
XXIst century and the 3rd millennium. We don’t know what we’ll have
in a future, but I hope it will be beautiful and interesting. They
say we can’t have a great future if we don’t realize the past. Our
meeting is devoted to the most important scientific
inventions.. You know we were given a very difficult task –
to create the book. Its name is “Great Discoveries of the world”.
We have already filled some pages of this fascinating and exciting
book. But we are having highly respected guests today –
they are journalists from famous newspapers and magazines. It’s
high time to make a historical reference on the question for them.
To understand the problem better let’s turn to our experts. They
have prepared for us very useful information.
III.
- научить учащихся извлекать смысловую информацию текста;
- тренировать в интерпретации смысловой информации текста (обобщать, делать выводы);
T.: First of all you should listen to some
texts and then fill in the missing information. There are five
columns in it. Be attentive, Press is waiting for our Revue.
Let’s thank our experts for exhaustive explanation, I think it was
difficult for them to choose information – the world is full of
mysteries. I would like some of you to summarize the facts
mentioned above. You may use your notes from the table. (Приложение 2, ex.1)
IV .
- научить учащихся высказываться по ситуации на уровне 2 – 3 предложений;
T.: Ladies & gentlemen! You are welcome to ask questions. Remember, scientists are very polite people though sometimes they are very absent – minded. So use courteous words and word combinations
1) “Daily Telegraph” newspaper. Could you tell us what exactly
… discovered?
2) “What’s New In the World?” magazine. Could you tell us
about …
3) Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society. I
should be interested to know how … are connected with each
other?
4) “Science and Technology” magazine Could you tell me,
what the importance of … discovery was
6) “Washington Post” I’d like to ask you a question.
7) “Good Morning newspaper” What are your achievements in
this field of science?
8) Notes and Records of
the Royal Society Well, I’m interested in…
9) “Inventions In Science” magazine There is some information
about investigations in physics. Could you tell us about them?
10) “Today” newspaper. My question deals with a phenomenon
T.: Thank you, now I want to know how well you are informed about the topic of our today’s conversations.
T.: While we are busy
would like some of you to give an interview for a famous scientific
journal. (Biology Letters is one of our seven,
high quality peer-reviewed journals covering: biological and
physical sciences). The editorial staff is very interested
in problems of cloning. I think you’ll be able to
answer all their questions.
Thank you, I see you are masters of our subject. But
now let’s listen to the conversation, its topic is very exciting.
You should write down the key sentences of it for our Press –
center.
Journalist: Our readers are very interested in
problems of cloning. What is your attitude toward this aspect of
science?
Expert: Cloning animals opens exciting
medical possibilities. Many people are in need of
tissues and organs for transplantation. But it isn’t easy to
get such organs as, for example, heart, liver or kidneys. Cloning
can solve this problem.
Journalist: It sounds very convincing. But is it
the only application of cloning?
Expert: Oh, no! Many animals are on the
brink of extinction. Cloning can be used to preserve them. Besides,
Scientists can create animals which produce more milk, meat and
wool, or animals which don’t catch certain diseases. This can save
the lives of starving people.
Journalist: Oh, I see. It might help to decide the
problems of Poverty. But people all over the world are worried
about the moral side of the problem. Would you mind explaining your
opinion.
Expert: Cloning is a controversial issue.
Some people are ready to eat cloned fruits and vegetables, but many
people are against cloning animals. They think it is morally
unacceptable. The question of human cloning is even more
controversial.
Journalist: What are the most complicated
questions in this field of science?
Expert: Suppose we cloned a man. Are we
really sure he will be a man? Who will be responsible for him? Who
will bring him up? Will he be happy? Will he have the same rights
as we have?
Journalist: I can add one more. What would
happen if a dictator, someone like Hitler, cloned himself? Would we
be able to survive?
Expert: But nevertheless, the idea of human
cloning seems very exciting.
Teacher: You should write down the key sentences
of it for our Press – center.
- Some medical problems could be solved.
- Mankind could have the opportunity to live a longer life.
- Mankind could solve the problem of feeding starving people.
- But cloning is a controversial issue: there are some moral aspects in the problem.
VI.

T.: You know one of the active areas of our
Royal Society is to increase public interest in science.
Activities include public lectures. We have just received the one
from Dr James Wilsdon, Director of Science Policy. But there is
something wrong with it, I would like you to make it complete with
the help of the derivatives that are formed from the words written
on the right.
2, ex.2)
T.: Let’s check. Look at the screen (Приложение 1, слайд
5)
VII.
- научить учащихся высказываться по ситуации на уровне 2-3 предложений;
T.: Well done, the pages devoted to these
discoveries and inventions are very interesting, but we are having
some blank spots in our book – let’s speak about Space. What
are we going to discuss?
T.: Let’s check our ideas. Look at the screen
What do you know about space? Can we say that space exploration is
the main part of science?
VIII.

You see the topic we ARE DISCUSSING IS VERY IMPORTANT. That’s why there are a lot of correspondents of different newspapers and scientific journals here. We should be ready for the press conference. You are to write some news reports. Let’s remember the structure of it:
The aim – to write about current events which are of interest to
the public
Style – formal. (You should present facts accurately).
Plan:
- Short catchy title.
- Introduction. (What happened? Why? When and where did it happen?

News report, share your
impressions.
So, let’s come to conclusion. We have just discussed some of the
most important and thrilling inventions in the world. Our book is
almost ready. But it has some blank page. Can you
guess who is this page devoted to? Look at the Motto of our today’s
lesson – “Man is still the most extraordinary thing of all”.
11). Of course, Man is the most extraordinary thing of
all. The future of the world is in his hands, the Future is in your
hands: Dream, Create, Act, but don’t forget to listen to your
hearts. Remember, only kind hearts are able to move the
Progress.
Well, I think our time is up. Thank you for your work and
attention. I hope you are quite satisfied with the Meeting. . Our
conference is over.
