Тема: “ School-Smart kids– the FCE?”

Grade-9

Rising star – A Pre-First Certificate Course (George Vassilakis with Luke Prodromou). Unit-13.

Part 1. Warming-up.

Greeting. Ask the pupils to think of all the words they know connected with the topic: “School, smart kids, the FCE?”

Part 2. Practice.

1) Ask pupils what the lesson is going to be about and comment their ideas.

Ask pupils to answer the following questions:

– What do they think about school years?

  • Why do children go to school?
  • What does the word education mean?
  • Do only smart kids sit for exams?
  • What country will you prefer for further education and why?
  • Have you ever heard about the FCE exam?
  • Do you know how many parts the exam has and what each part tests?

-What way is it better to improve English-in school or out?

2) There is the summary on the board: READING, WRITING, USE OF ENGLISH, LISTENING, SPEAKING.

Ask pupils – “Which part they think is going to be difficult and why.”

3) Offer pupils to discuss the ways of improving their English in the 3 areas:

exam skills/ outside the school/ study skills.

(They can use some tips on the board or CD)

Exam skills: learning about the exam, doing practice exams…

outside the classroom: watching films or television in English, reading English books and magazines…..

study skills: using an English-English dictionary, checking rules in grammar book…

2. Homework-checking.

At home the students introduced with the text-“Success comes in “cans” not in cant`s” (Student`s book ex.3 p.113) which advised them how good to prepare for the FCE. The teacher should focus their attention on the text and ask to underline key sentences, choosing ideas from the text they can use explaining the seriousness of their decision.

3. Grammar-Revision.

The text is full of modal verbs that`s why this part is dedicated to:

– Matching the definitions with the certain verbs. ( Blackboard or-CD)

Must – to express advice

Have to – to talk about ability

Can – obligation, prohibition

Should – to express obligation, coming from the speaker himself.

May/might – to express obligation, which is outside the speaker himself.

As it is a revision the matching could be done on the computer by any pupil.

– Grammar exercises. The rest will complete the text of ex.2 p.115 (Student`s book) by choosing the correct verb form.

Ask pupils (on the sheets of paper) to write their own advice to the partner who is anxious about the importance of the exams, using the words of ex.3 p.115.

– Ask them to look at the ways of talking about exams. (Ex. 5-6 p.116)

4. Demonstrate the picture

(CD or Student`s book-p.117) and ask for their opinion. The key question is: “Who are the people and how do you think they feel?”

Part 3. Production.

1) Brief Reading and Speaking.

– To develop the idea of smart kids and exams the teacher asks pupils to read briefly short extracts in the Practice Book (ex.1 p.76 -77) which are comments by examiners involved into the FCE. (It`s possible to divide the extracts among the pupils to cope with the task faster).

– This exercise is a logical link between the previous and the final parts of the lesson. Help pupils to come up with the ideas which will be helpful to comment the reasons for such misbehaviour of some students on exams. (You may use the same picture as a vivid example.)

2) All in all these are teachers` opinions. Ask pupils to present the children of our school and decide: “Whether they are smart or careless about the exams.”

Role-play the exam situation (there could be 2 students who are taking the exam and the rest will be examiners, who are ready to ask as many questions as possible). This situation looks like the FCE version.

(The task is based on the use of modal verbs, exam expressions, learnt at the lesson. The main topic for the role– play is school and pupils` attitude to the process of improving their knowledge that can help them be smart and overcome some problems.)

– As the result, the teacher should encourage the pupils` answers and praise the smartest ones.

3) Finally, ask students to return to the theme of the lesson (it can be seen on the board) and offer them to add one word that can connect:”School (smart kids) => the FCE?”

– To sum up the lesson, advise them to name general tips for candidates that can ease preparing for the FCE. (These are the ideas the pupils learnt at the lesson from the texts and some exercises.)

– If you have some time you may give solid advice to the pupils:”If you remember these comments and follow the general rules, you`ll pass the FCE successfully. Everybody knows that every year the students of our school have a good opportunity to sit for the FCE “.

4) It`s time for homework.
