Teacher: Good morning, boys and girls! Today we shall have a meeting of the pupils from different countries. One group will be from Russia, Adyghea; and other pupils are from America, Washington. You have to imagine that you are Russian and American students on TV. Let’s divide into two teams. Everybody has an opportunity to express his or her opinion.

Teacher: All the pupils must be very polite, active, patient and attentive.
Let’s begin our telebrige between Maykop and Washington! Now let’s remember some facts about these cities. Our pupils from Russia and America will speak just now!
1st pupil from Maykop: Adygh republic, the first region in the list of the subjects of the Russian Federation, is situated on the picturesque slopes of the Caucasian Ridge in the valley of the rivers Kuban and Laba. The whole area of the republic is 7,800square kilometers, with a population of 460,000 residents. On the banks of the mountain river of Belaya we can see Maykop-the capital of Adyghea. It is its administrative, economic and cultural centre. The town of Maykop was founded on 25 May 1857.Originally a fortress; it later turned into a settlement. Maykop means “valley of wild apple trees”, in the Adygh language. So, one of the symbols in town are the apple-tree leaves. Maykop gained world notoriety twice: first when the Maykop Burial Mound was discovered, and second in 1909 when academician M. M. Gubkin discovered oil here.
1st pupil from Washington: Washington D. C. is the capital of the United States and the centre of its government. It’s a city and district-the District of Columbia (D. C.). Don’t confuse with the State of Washington, which is located in the northwest of the United States. Washington, D. C., is located on the East Coast. It was chosen by George Washington as the permanent site for the nation’s capital on December 1, 1800. The capital was named after the first president George Washington. It is situated on the Potomac River in the District of Columbia. Washington is not the largest city in the USA. it has the population only 900,000. Washington is the residence of the President and the Congress of the USA. It is a large scientific and cultural centre.
Teacher: Thank you! Now we have learned the history of these cities Maykop and Washington. Every country has its symbols. Let’s speak about the official symbols of Russia and the USA.
2nd pupil from Washington: The official symbols of the USA are: the American flag, the national anthem, the national emblem, the Statue of Liberty. Показывает на постере изображения этих символов (Приложение 1). The American flag is often called “The Stars and Stripes”, it is also called “Old Glory”. It represents the growth of the nation. It has 13 horizontal stripes which stand for the original 13 states. In the top left hand corner there are 50 white stars: one star for each state.
The national anthem is “The Star Spangled Banner”. The words written during the Anglo-American war of 1812-1814 and set to the music of an old song.
The eagle became the national emblem of the country in 1782. It has am olive branch (a symbol of peace) and arrows (a symbol of strength). You can see the eagle on the back of a dollar bill.
The Statue of Liberty is the symbol of American democracy. It stands on Liberty Island in New York. France gave the statue to America in 1884 as a symbol of friendship.
2nd pupil from Maykop: One Russian symbol is the Russian national flag. Показывает флаг России (Приложение 2). This flag has three wide stripes. They are white, blue and red. The upper stripe is white, the middle stripe is blue and the red stripe is at the bottom. These colours have always been symbolic in Russia: white– noble and sincere, blue– honest and devoted– devoted to friends, family and to the country. The red colour has always meant love and bravery.
Teacher: And what are the non-official symbols of these countries?
Pupils from Maykop: Non-official symbols of the USA I think are: hamburgers, Mc. Donald’s, W. Disney, Hollywood, President, States, Superstar, Dollar, Jack London, Mark Twain, Henry Ford, Elvis Presley, Louis Armstrong, George Washington …
Pupils from Washington: Non-official symbols of Russia are: Moscow, the Red Square, the Bolshoy Theatre, samovar, balalaika, matryoshka, a birch tree-beryozka, Russian bear, very cold winter, A.S. Pushkin, Mikhail Lomonosov, U.Gagarin, P.I. Tchaikovsky, the Tretyakov Gallery, F.Dostoevsky and many others.
Teacher: Thank you very much! Can you describe the nature of your regions?
3d pupil from Maykop: The foothills of this region are very beautiful. The Caucasian mountains are not very high here. The land is very rich. Climate here is variable, but still mild and warm. Every season is very nice, but autumn is especially nice, rich and warm. The republic gets a large number of fruits and vegetables. In 1924 the famous Caucasian State Nature Reserve was founded in Adyghea. Here one can see hundreds kinds of birds, 1,500 species of plants, 60 kinds of animals. The people are very proud of their reserve and attentively take care of all species.
3d pupil from Washington: The United States of America stretches from Atlantic Ocean across North America and far into the Pacific. Because of such a huge size of the country the climate differs from one part of the country to another. In the east there are the Appalachian Mountains.
Teacher– How do you take care of nature in your regions? Let’s have a talk about it.
4th pupil from Washington: Air, water and soil are necessary for existence of all living things. But polluted air can cause illness, and even death. Polluted water kills fish and other marine life. On polluted soil food can not be grown. Pollution is as complicated as serious problem all over the world. But pollution can be reduced gradually. Scientists and engineers find the ways to reduce pollution from automobiles and factories. Government pass the laws that make enterprises take measures for reducing of pollution. Individuals and groups of people are work together to persuade enterprises to stop polluting activities.
4th pupil from Maykop: Ecology is a science which studies the relationship between all forms of life on our planet with its environment. This word came from the Greek “oikos” which means “home”. This idea of “home” includes the whole planet of ours. Many territories, water basins, lakes, rivers, seas, oceans– and the atmosphere are polluted with all kinds of technological, agricultural, chemical, nuclear and other wastes. The intensive development of sciences, industry and chemistry has made the pollution of our environment a global problem which should be solved by all means.
Teacher: Every city has its own sightseeings. What are the places of interest in your cities?
5th pupil from Maykop: Maykop has a rich historical and cultural heritage. There are more than 250 monuments of architecture, history and culture in it. The system of cultural institutions is represented by houses of culture, children’s art schools, the Town Park of Culture and Rest, a picture gallery, the National Museum and North-Caucasian branch of the State East Museum. There are 19 libraries. Many buildings fulfill their main cultural mission, being the centre of the spiritual life of both residents and tourists. Among these buildings are Palace of culture “Druzhba” and Pushkin Public House which are the main theatres stages for two acting groups– Russian and Adygh drama theatres, Town House of Culture “Giant”, movie theatre “October”, State Philharmonic Society.

Teacher: What can you say about tourism development in your cities?
6th pupil from Washington: Washington D. C. has long wide avenues, gardens, beautiful parks and no sky scrapers at all, because no other building must be taller than the Capitol– the seat of the American Congress. The White House is the President’s resident was built in 1799. There are many research institutes, five universities, the National Academy of Science, the Library of Congress, the Jefferson Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument, the National Mall and Museums. There is one more well-known building in Washington– Pentagon, the residence of the US Military department. It is situated in the suburbs to the south of the Potomac River.
6th pupil from Maykop: Maykop takes a worthy place on the tourist map of the Russian Federation, which is defined by traditional hiking and horse riding as well as by the town location not far from the mountainous part of the Republic. It is impossible to describe the beauty of the foothills. The plateau Lago-Naki, the Fisht and Oshten Mountains, the mountain river Belaya and Kurzhips, an incomparable variety of landscapes, mineral resources and exotic natural landscapes– all these aspects create unique conditions for rest, treatment and tourism development. Building the road from Maykop to Tuapse made our town the basic cross-road on the way ton the Black Sea coast.
