Beginning of Anglo – Russian Relations.
Relations between Russia and England go back to the middle of the 16th century.
On the 23rd of August 1553 an unknown ship was seen off the White Sea coast near the mouth
of the Northern Dvina. It was an English ship, one of the three ships sent to northern
Russia by the English Trading Company.
The commander of the ship, Richard Chancellor, went ashore and then made his way to Moscow
as the first English ambassador to Russia.
He was received by Ivan the Fourth. Later the English established a trading company in
Moscow.
In 1556 Chancellor returned to England. On board his ship was the first Russian ambassador
to London. This was Osip Nepeya who carried a letter of introduction to Queen Mary from
Ivan the Fourth.
This is how the long history of Anglo – Russian relations began.

P1: As for me, I would like to visit Trafalgar Square. I want to see a
monument to Admiral Nelson.
P2: I’d like to visit St. Paul’s Cathedral. It’s interesting to see
the famous Whispering Gallery.
P3: If my memory serves me right , Buckingham Palace is the Queen’s
London residence. I think it’s a very interesting place.
P4: I’d like to visit the Tower of London because it’s a very old
building. I’d like to see the ceremony of the keys at 10 p.m.
P5: I’d like to visit Westminster Abbey. It’s the church where the
kings and the queens have been crowned. Many of them are buried there. There are many
graves of famous people in this church.
T: Dr. Johnson said, “When a man is tired of London he is tired of
life”. This saying is well – known now but it is still true. There are hundreds
of historic buildings, galleries and museums in London. Most museums are free. There are
parks, over 80 theatres and even more cinemas. London is a beautiful city. It is worth
visiting.
