Scene 1. At School (in the classroom)
Headmaster: Dear students! I`m taking my classes on a school visit to the Natural History Museum tomorrow. Everybody must, please:
– be at the museum at 8,
– wear your school uniform and comfortable shoes,
– bring a raincoat, a packed lunch, an exercise book and a pencil.
We shall come back at 5 p.m. This visit is very important and all the children must go.
Student 1: Brilliant! Oh, we`re poor things!
Student 2: I hate these museums, I`m going to play computer games all day
long.
Student 3: Oh, bad luck! We visited the museum last year. It was
terrible, the time hardly moved, we nearly slept, it was boring.
Student 4: Hey! It`s my birthday tomorrow. I`m going to have a party!
Headmaster: Any questions? You`ll write a test using the museums
lectures. Bye!
Student 1: Anyway, we must go or we`ll have problems. See you later,
guys.
Scene 2. At the Bus Stop
S1: Pardon me, do the buses stop here?
Man: Yes, most downtown buses stop at this corner.
S2: We want to go to the History Museum. Can I take any bus that stops
here?
Man: You can take any bus except number 12.
S3: Thanks.
Man: You are welcome.
Scene 3. At the Museum
Professor: Thousands of years ago, there was ice across a lot of the
world. When the ice melted and it become warmer, people`s lives changed. They didn`t live
in caves any more. They made their houses with small trees and grass.
Students listen, then step by step go away.
S1: They didn`t go to school! Cool! Lucky they were.
Students notice the door: "FORBIDDEN".
S2: What`s this?
S3: Let`s come in.
S4: Sure. Rather unusual.
S1: I want to be a caveboy, because they didn`t go to school, there were
no books and museums.
A voice of Time Machine.
I. Music "In a Cave" (Cambridge English Student’s Book One for school in
Russia, p.80)
II. Nogoba – the Cavegirl.
S. – Who are you?
N: I'm a cavegirl, Nogoba.
S: Lucky you are! You've no schools, books and teachers.
Nogoba tells about her life.
I live in a cave with about 40 other people. We live in big groups to help each other. Our
lives are very dangerous. There are many wild animals near the caves-lions, tigers, bears
and elephants. We hunt and kill animals for food.
The children`s lives are dangerous too. We go to the river every day to get water. There
are wild animals near the river. I`m always cold. There is ice and snow everywhere. It`s
difficult to be warm. We sleep by the fire. We go to find fruit and nuts to eat. Sometimes
they are poisonous and we often become ill. There aren`t any cave doctors or hospitals!
III. Cavepeople run and cry: "Lion, lion" Nogoba goes away.
Students hear the lion's roar and run away.
IV. Cave paintings:
S-s notice a man, drawing smth on the wall (as an animal, turned upside down).
S1: How do you make paint? ( he touches the wall)
Cave painter: We make it from different planes and look I keep them in animal pones.
S2: Why do you paint the animal upside down?
C: to show, that it is dead.
S3: (Touches the man) What do you put on your body? Why?
C: We put animal fat on our bodies. It helps us to keep warm and it's
difficult for the animals to hold us.
S4: What animals do you hunt?
C: Mammoths, tigers, bears, antelopes. We kill them with spears.
I like soft meat, the heart and the brains, most of all.
S-s: Yak!
Cavemen sing “Caveman Rock” (“Cambridge English for Schools in Russia”-I )
I`m a caveman and I`m OK,
I`m a caveman and I hunt all day,
I haven`t got a car and I haven’t got a flat,
I haven`t got a dog or a pussy cat,
I`m a caveman and I`m OK.
I`m a caveman and I`m OK,
I`m a caveman and I hunt all day,
I keep my paint inside a bone,
I cut my meat with spears and stone,
I`m a caveman and I`m OK.
I`m a caveman and I`m OK,
I`m a caveman and I hunt all day,
I haven`t got a fridge and I haven`t got a bed,
I haven`t got a Walkman on my head,
I`m a caveman and I`m OK.
I`m a caveman and I`m OK,
I`m a caveman and I hunt all day,
I keep quite warm with fire and skin.
I make the pots that we cook in,
I`m a caveman and I`m OK.
Students go away.
Scene 4
S5: (jump into a time machine): Go, go, go!
S2: Come on!
S3: Stop! Enough!
In Egypt.
S3: Life in Egypt was very different from life in Europe Life in Egypt
was very different from life in Europe 4000 thousand years ago.
S4: How?
S3: Well the Egyptians built some very big pyramids, for example.
S4: Are they really 4000 thousand years old?
S3: Yes, they tell us a lot about life in Egypt.
S4: What do they tell us?
S3: Well, we discovered jewellery in the pyramids. We know the Egyptians
went to other countries to buy the stones. You can see one of the boats in the picture.
S4: Mm. Did they sell things?
S3: Food and wine, I think.
S4: That`s very interesting. Did they write?
S3: Yes, archaeologists found old paper called papyrus in the pyramids.
S4: What did they eat?
S3: Well, we know they ate corn. We think they were good farmers… and
soldiers.
S4: Did they fight wars?
S3: Oh, yes. They had lots of wars.
Scene 5
Students meet an Egyptian. He is Nebamun, a scribe
Students: Hi! Can you tell us where we are?
Nebamun: Thebes, beside the river Nile.
Students: 3.500 years ago! God heaven!
N: Work, boys, work! I’m a scribe, an important person. And I want you
to paint pictures on the walls of my tomb. First the walls must be plastered. When the
plaster is dry, begin to paint. Mark squares on the walls with red paint. Then draw the
out lines of each picture. Then the colours go on the wall – blue for water, red for
men`s skin, black for hair and eyes, white for clothes, green for plant
Students: The tomb? Why do you want the tomb now, when you are alive?
N: You are strangers here, you don`t know that we believe in life
after death.
The paintings will show all the things that I need after death: tables with good food, a
garden, a pool, full of fish, my wife and me standing in the boat.
S4: I don`t know how to paint. Let’s go!
Scene 6
Students meet the Princess.
S3: Oh boy!
P: I'm a girl
S3: Hi! How are you doing?
(Pr. looks up)
P: I'm a princess
S3: Cool day today, isn't it?
P: No, day is good. Who are you?
S3: I'm a student. I like to shoot. I see you shoot movie over here as
well. Cool! It's my camera.
P: Devil, devil, oh, help (runs away).
S3: You, nut, she is a real princess.
S3: Why? Let's ask somebody. Hey! Hello! Who lives in the castle?
Servant: Our lord. He visited us yesterday.
S2: Doesn't he live here all the time?
Serv: Our lord owns many different castles. He spends his time moving
around the country, staying in his castles. He stays in each castle for a short time until
the local supplies of food and drink are gone. The only people who live permanently in the
castle are servants.
S3: Who directs you?
Serv: A constable does. Sorry, I'm very busy. The lord usually arrives
with a great many people. Besides, he usually travels with his own furniture: tables,
benches, chairs, linen and beds.
S4: What does the lord do here?
Serv: He holds courts to collect rents and punish criminals. In summer
and winter he hunts deer and bears. Occasionally there are tournaments. Ladies embroider,
children play with toys and animals.
S1: People often imagine that nobles feast all days. Is it true?
Serv: No it isn't totally accurate, but dinner is a very important meal.
We boil and bake a lot of food.
Come with me. I'll give you something in the kitchen.
S2: That's nice, I'm starving.
S3: It's better, than museum. Real adventures.
At the end of the lesson students sing a song “Pyramids and Dinosaurs” (Cambridge English for schools in Russia-II p.102)
I was a boy, but I am sure
I can`t remember when I was born,
When I only ate and I only cried,
I suppose a few years is a very long time.
But a history book changes it all,
You thought you were big, but you know that you`re small
When you read about pyramids and dinosaurs.
Chorus
That was a long,
Ooh, it was a long, long,
That was a long, long, long, time ago.
I was a baby, but I don`t think
I can remember a single thing
About when I couldn`t talk and I couldn`t laugh,
I suppose it must be so far in the past.
But a history book changes it all,
You thought you were big, but you know that you`re small
When you read about pyramids and dinosaurs.
Repeat chorus.
