Сначала учащиеся читают новые слова в транскрипции, затем соотносят транскрипцию со словами и еще раз читают их вслух. Ученики сами подбирают соответствующий перевод с русского языка под руководством учителя.
Далее, читая приведенные дефиниции, они пишут слова. Затем приводятся упражнения для тренировки орфографии слов.
Последнее задание представляет собой решение кроссворда или предложения, в которые нужно вставить слова, которые необходимо изменить так, чтобы получить нужное. Пропущенные слова также могут быть размещены в четырех вариантах к каждой позиции. Учащиеся знакомятся с набором однокоренных слов к каждому введенному слову.
Упражнения рекомендуется выполнять за несколько уроков до начала изучения раздела New Words to learn учебника. Уже хорошо зная слова, и умея их писать, учащиеся легко выполняют упражнения учебника этого раздела.
