The theme of the lesson: The journey to the Grammar Treasure planet

The objectives of the lesson:

  • To revise the grammar material of the proceeding lessons (the Present Simple tense) ;
  • To practise the vocabulary on the topic “My working day”;
  • To develop students’ speaking skills- acting out an interview;
  • To develop students’ listening skills;
  • To develop students’ reading skill – reading for specific information.

Educational supplies: the map of the planet, the blackboard, a cassette recorder, cards and papers with the special tasks, tables, pictures of precious stones and coins.

The plan of the lesson :

Teacher: Good morning, dear friends! I’m glad to see you. Today we are having a very unusual lesson – we are flying to the Grammar Treasure planet. During our journey to the stars we are going to revise the Present Simple tense, practise the words on the topic “My working day”, read the interview with a star and do a lot of exercises. The planet is very interesting, it consists of 7 counties: Attention, Poetry, Creativity, Imagination, Logic, Celebrities and Communication. King of the planet is very kind, his name is the Present Simple. He likes talking about everything that happens in his kingdom every day. He has got twin daughters, their names are Do and Does. The girls always help their father but they have no real power. King rewards the people who know the Present Simple well. You’ve got a chance to become rich – you’ll get a gem or a gold coin for every correct answer. Let’s prepare for our flight!
It’s very important to practise our vocal cords and pronunciation. Reading a poem is the best way to do it. Let’s read the poem called “Banker’s Wife’s Blues” in pairs: one person is reading the questions and your partner is reading the answers, then change the roles. I’ll read first, listen to me carefully, after that work in pairs.

Banker’s Wife’s Blues

Student 1: Where does John live?
Student 2: He lives near the bank
Student 1: Where does he work
Student 2: He works at the bank.
Student 1: When does he work?
Student 2:
He works all day
And he works all night,
At the bank, at the bank,
At the great, big bank.
Student 1: Where does he study?
Student 2: He studies at the bank.
Student 1: Where does he sleep?
Student 2: He sleeps at the bank.
Student 1:
Why does he spend all day, all night,
All day, all night,
At the bank, at the bank?
Student 2:
Because he loves his bank
More than his wife
And he loves his money
More than his wife.
(Students read the poem in pairs)

Teacher:Well done! It’s time to revise our grammar material. Look at the cards and complete the sentences with these words: play, plays, live, lives, do, does.

Affirmative sentences:                                 Negative sentences:

I, you, we, they  ….  tennis.                           I, you, we, they …. not … tennis.
He, she, it          ….  in London.                     He, she, it        …. not … in London.

Questions:

…. I, you, we, they …. tennis?
…. he, she, it …. in London?

Teacher:Are you ready? Rita and Dima, will you go to the board and write your answers, please? Great, you know the rules and I think, you are ready for the flight.

Let’s play the game called “The last word”. The last word of the previous sentence should be the first word of the next one. We’ve only got 2 minutes to play the game. I’d like to start it:

The students who have 9 or 10 gems get “a five”, 7 or 8 gems get “a four”, if you aren’t rich enough (4-6 gems), keep your treasure up for the next game. Look at the door of our classroom, please. Can you see those two bunches of balloons? Leaving the classroom take a red balloon if you liked our lesson or take a green balloon if you didn’t like it. The bell has gone. Thank you. Goodbye.  (All red balloons were taken by the students but there was a bunch of green balloons left.)
