Tapescript

Narrator: Today we are going to talk about great invention and inventors.

I’d like to start with one of the most popular inventions ever made. Most of us can hardly imagine life without it… Yes, you’re right, it’s the telephone…The telephone is now the most widely used communication device. The device was invented by Alexander Graham Bell in1876 when he was doing some research on deafness. He used it to transmit speech sounds over electric wires.

Narrator: …Now, let’s talk a bit more about communications and look at another invention – Morse code. Samuel Morse, an American inventor and artist, developed the electric telegraph and the signaling code that is named after him. He established the first US telegraph link in 1844.

Narrator: …The next invention that I think is worth mentioning was made by several people in different countries almost at the same time – I mean the invention of radio communication. One of the most famous names in this field is Alexander Popov, a Russian professor. He wanted to develop a device to detect thunderstorms in advance. In May, 1895, Popov reported sending and receiving a wireless signal 600 yards.

Narrator: I think we should also mention some other things many young people can’t live without – TV and computers. I’d like to concentrate on some unusual ideas. A British inventor, Clive Sinclair, born in 1940, was a pioneer in the field of microelectronics, producing items such as a hand-held personal computer and a pocket-sized television set.

Narrator: …and now back to history again. A name everybody in the world knows: Thomas Alva Edison. He is most famous for the invention of the light bulb, a glass container with a thin wire inside, which produces light by using electricity. Actually, he is one of the best-known American inventors and he made over 1,300 electrical inventions including the microphone, the record player and equipment for the cinema.

Narrator: at the end of my lecture I think I should mention another thing that has become widely used all over the world during the last decade – the compact disk. James Russell invented the compact disk in 1965. He was granted a total of 22 patents for various elements of his compact disk system. However, the compact disk only became popular when it was mass manufactured by Philips in 1980.
