EDUCATION IN RUSSIA
Education is very important in our life. The quality of a country's future life, commercially; industrially and intellectually, depends on the quality of its educational system.
An educated person is one who knows a lot about many things. He always tries to learn, find out, and discover more about the world around him. He gets knowledge at school, from books, magazines, from TV educational programs. The result of the educative process is the capacity for Further education.
Russians have always shown a great concern for education. The right to education is stated in the Constitution of the Russian Federation. It is ensured by compulsory secondary schools, vocational schools, and higher education establishments. It is also ensured by the development of extramural and evening courses and the system of state scholarships and grants.
Education in Russia is compulsory up to the 9th form inclusive. The stages of compulsory schooling in Russia are: primary education for ages 6-7 to 9-10 inclusive; secondary education including intermediate school for ages 10-11 to 12-13 inclusive, and senior school for ages 13-14 to 14-15 inclusive, If a pupil of a secondary school wishes to go on in higher education, he or she must stay at school for two more years. Primary and secondary school together comprise 11 years of study. Every school has a "core curriculum" of academic subjects, such as Russian, Literature, Mathematics, History, a foreign language and others. Lyceums and gymnasiums offer programs giving a profound knowledge in some fields of study.
After finishing the 9th form one can go on to a vocational school which offers programmes of academic subjects and a programme of training in a technical field, or a profession.
After finishing the 11th form of a secondary school, a lyceum or a gymnasium one can go on in higher education. All applicants must take competitive examinations. Higher education institutions, that is, institutes or universities, offer a 5-year programme of academic subjects for undergraduates in a variety of fields, as well as a postgraduate course. If one finishes a postgraduate course and writes a thesis, he or she receives a candidate's degree or a doctoral degree.
All secondary schools, institutes and universities until recently have been funded by the state, now there is quite a number of private fee-paying primary and secondary schools; some universities have fee-paying departments.
1. Children 100 years ago.
One hundred years ago schools were very different. Children did not wear uniforms. They used to wear their every day clothes to school.
Children learned to read, write and do mathematics. They had history and geography lessons but they did not learn science.
They used to write on slates with white chalk. When the children finished their work, they cleaned their slates with a rag so that they could write on them again and again.
The little children learned to write by drawing their letters in a sand tray. When they were older, children learned to write with dip pens and ink. They did not have biros or crayons like children today. They did not have many books because they were very expensive.
Children sat at desks arranged in rows. The desks each had an inkwell and a groove for keeping a pen.
Some children had to walk a mile or more to get to school.
There were no school lunches. Children went home for themselves, but children who lived too far away brought theirs to school. In winter the children sat round the coal fire in the schoolroom to eat.
This was the way the classrooms looked like in the old days.
Look, here you can see furniture of the school of the old times. There were no lamps, only candles in candlesticks. The beginning and the end of the lesson was announced by an old hand bell.
There were three classrooms: one for the smallest children, one for the middle class and a big room for the oldest children.
2. My school.
2.1 A short journey to the past.
The brief information about the history of my school.
Our school is one of the oldest high schools in our town. It was founded in 1926 .The headmaster of the school was Konstantin Valenyuk. In 1941 he was sent to military service. The school began to live under the military schedule. September 1, 1941 Klavdiya Dyomina, the new headmaster of the school, met pupils. Many schoolboys were taken to the fronts of the Second World War after finishing the school. They fought for the freedom of our country. We can get information about them at our school museum.
К. Kharlamov, В. Deyev, V.Strelin, Kolonitskiy, Mortikov, Motorin - the participants of the Second World War were former schoolboys of our school, who gave their lives for freedom of our Motherland
The Hero of the Soviet Union General-lieutenant colonel of aircraft Semyon Kharlamov, our countryman, also studied at our school. From 1942 to1945 years he made 544 fight flights; he got down 4 enemy’s planes. Kharlamov was seriously hurt In 1975 there was a meeting with the Hero of the Soviet Union Semyon Kharlamov at our native school. In 1981 a new three-storied building was made of bricks for our school. It became the bright event in the life of 624 pupils and their parents and teachers. The pedagogical staff tried to keep all the best famous traditions of one of the oldest schools of Krasny Kut region, transforming the school house in a temple of knowledge and the center of kindness. The Honorable worker of Privolzhskaya Railway, High Achiever of Education, headmaster of the school Irina Chausova was at the head of the school from 1983 till 1993. She made a great contribution in school formation.
In 2006 our school celebrated anniversaries:
- 80 years from the date of foundation;
- 25 years of a presence(finding) of school in a new building,
- 10 years of job in a municipality.
All secondary students wore uniforms to school.
BOYS UNIFORM: White shirt, red pioneer tie, dark-blue school trousers and jacket, black shoes.
GIRLS UNIFORM: Brown school dress, stockings, light shoes, white/black apron.
Since 1946 and till the present time schoolchildren of the school have got 37 gold and 83 silver medals. Nowadays it is possible to meet graduators of our school in all parts of our Motherland and abroad. Some of them are famous all over the world and some of them are simple modest workers – the memory of school youth lives in their grateful hearts.
2.2 Present days.
My school at a glance.
My school is not very big and not very old with its traditions. My school is very well equipped. There are sporting facilities including a gym on the ground floor, and a sports ground outside the school building. On the ground floor there is a headmaster office, a large assembly hall, a cloakroom and a canteen. And in our canteen room we always buy very tasty pies. Students eat a hot lunch at school.
The classrooms of the first, second and the third form are on the second floor. On the second floor we have also a library with a reading hall, a home economics room and Biology labs.
On the third floor, we have Physics, Chemistry labs and classrooms for studying Geography, Math’s, Russian language and literature, English/German/French classrooms.
We have also a computer classroom where basic computer skills are taught.
School year begins on the 1st of September and ends in May. It lasts 9 months: from September till May. We have 4 holidays a year. The summer holidays are long. They last 3 months. The winter holidays are shorter, they lasts only two weeks. During the holidays we don't study, we have a rest. We go to school every day except Sundays. On weekdays we work hard. On weekends we have a rest, as a rule. We have classes 6 days a week, from 8.20 in the morning till 2 or 3 in the afternoon. Each lesson lasts forty minutes. During the breaks we just stand outside, talk, play and repeat our homework.
We usually have a lot of homework and it takes us several hours to do it. Sometimes we have to sit up to write a composition, to prepare a report or to learn a poem by heart. After classes you can participate in extracurricular activities including all kinds of school clubs and societies. At our school you can be a member of a choir, dancing club, sport club, the English-speaking Club and a drama club.
Pupils living far from school are taken to school by yellow school bus.
All pupils of our school learn some foreign languages: English, French, and German. At the English lessons we check our home tasks. We ask and answer the questions; we read English texts and translate sentences both from English into Russian and from Russian into English. We describe pictures and speak on various topics. During the English lesson we do many exercises, we speak, read and write English. Sometimes we listen to the tapes. We don't speak Russian in class. We enjoy dramatizing texts and dialogues, learning new words and grammar, setting up role plays or just communicating in English.
In my opinion, the quality of teaching at our school is much better now than it used to be.
Really we have to respect and know the value of teachers, because being a teacher is not an easy profession in this case we should love, respect and know their endless value.
The teachers are all active, honest, kind, well-educated, well-dressed, well-advised, and well-behaved. They are all in a good form. And finally I want to write that my teachers are the most important persons in my life.
There are 500 pupils in our school. Some of them love our school but some of them think that it is a load of their life. I thought this way some years ago, but now I understand that all these ages I have spent in my school - the best ages in my life.
I like my school. I always remember: "Education brings a child the world".
2.3 Computers in the Classroom.
The Internet.
Nowadays we live in information era, when information is the key and engine of progress. Future is speed and power. The Internet, phones, telegraph, cell phones, radio, TV are no longer symbols of prestige but tools, which let to use working time more effectively. 60 years ago people didn't even heard of computers, and today we can't imagine our life without them.
Nowadays, practically everyone has a computer at home. Computers play a very important role in our life. They are used by people of all ages: from teens to professional businessmen. We can't imagine our modern school without using a computer. We can make projects, slide-shows and even films at our lessons with the help of computes. Pupils can use computers to prepare reports, to find information they need, to write compositions, to find new friends with the help of the Internet.
And now I want to tell some words about the Internet. To my mind, it's the greatest invention of humanity. Today the Internet is very popular all over the world. You can virtually visit different countries, cities, museums. You can play games and take part in conferences together with people from different countries.
This explosion in computer technology has resulted in a rush to install computers in every classroom and to 'wire' every school to the Internet. Both educators and students alike have been forced to keep up with this new wave of technology. Teachers have found that even though they themselves are still trying to learn the most basic of computer skills, they are expected to teach students about computer know-how.
Computers will make the classroom a better place in which to teach the difficult concepts and ideas that students need to become brighter, more successful adults
2.4 Learning foreign languages.
Everybody knows his own language, but it is useful to know foreign languages.
That’s why pupils have got such subject as a foreign language at school.
The great German poet Goethe once said: “He who knows no foreign language does not know his own one.” Learning foreign languages is especially important nowadays. Some people learn foreign languages because they need them in their work, others travel abroad, for the third studying languages is a hobby. Ordinary people need language to translation the instruction or the manual to the washing-machine or a vacuum-cleaner, medicine or even food-products. Thanks to the knowledge of foreign languages one can read books, magazines in the original, talk to foreigners, translate various technical articles.
Learning foreign languages opens up opportunities and careers that didn't even exist some years ago. Knowing foreign languages can help us to find a job in such fields as science and technology, foreign trade and banking, international transportation communication, teaching librarian science and others. Of course speaking and writing in a foreign language is a difficult art and it has to be learned. As for me, I'm completely convinced that to know a foreign language is absolutely necessary for all educated person and modern specialists.
ENGLISH LANGUAGE IS THE WORLD’S TOP TONGUE
English is one of the world languages. It is the language of progressive science and technology, trade and cultural relations, commerce and business. It is the universal language of international aviation, shipping and sports. It is also the major language of diplomacy. Hundreds and hundreds of books, magazines and newspapers are printed in English, most of the world’s mail and telephone calls are in English. Half of the world’s scientific literature is written in English. English is spoken by more than 350 million people. Geographically, it is the most widespread language on earth, second after Chinese. It is the official language of the UK, the USA, of Australia and New Zealand; it is used as one of the official languages in Canada, the South Africa. Millions of people study and use English as a foreign language. In our country English is very popular. It is studied at schools, colleges and universities
Learning English is not an easy thing. It is a long process and takes a lot of time and patience.
I learn English because I want to read foreign literature in the original.
I like to travel, so it is difficult to visit countries, when you don’t know the language of these countries. You can see a lot of advertisements, signboards, and names in the streets, but they are in foreign languages, so if you know English, you can read and understand them.
Now we buy many clothes from other countries. If you know English well, you can read something about the size of this or that thing.
In short, I understand that I have to learn English in a proper way and I try to do it.
Finally I’ve come to a definite conclusion (suppose you join me too) that English influences on our life to a great extent. English is famous, popular and necessary. English opens us new horizons and opportunities. At last English is-the best hope for world language!

3.2 The ten qualities of great teacher
What makes a teacher exceptional? Great teachers understand the magic of learning, they respect and value their place in the process, and they thrive along with their students. But a closer look at classroom attitudes and methods of instruction reveals a commonality among the best of the best teachers.
- Compassion
- Creativity
- Dedication
- Enthusiasm
- Ethics
- Imagination
- Leadership
- Listening
- Patience
- Respect
Great teachers understand that respect is something they have to give in order to receive. Because they value the minds (and the personalities) they are helping to shape, treating students with courtesy, consideration, and regard is fundamental to their personal interaction-in and out of the classroom.
3.3 Perfect School.
Some students' ideas about a perfect school
Have you ever thought how the school of the future will look? No? And we have tried to imagine such school...
Certainly, all schools will be completely computer aided. The computer is important attribute of school of the future.
How the school marks will change in the future? Think! We can inform, there will be more marks than nowadays! By the way, the more marks we have, it is easier to the schoolboys to study, teachers to teach, and parents to see how their children study.
What is possible to say about an interior of school of the future? At school there will be sets of engineering and other entertainments, which will borrow (occupy) the schoolboys.
About the teachers of school of the future we can say only that all of them will be the highly skilled workers and simply good people. Well and the schoolboys, both were different, and will stay different. Someone will study better; someone will take part in entertaining school measures and someone, on the contrary, in scientific conferences.
In our school if you are particular bright, you are offered a scholarship.
Every student will get more attention if classes are smaller. I’m sure a compulsory uniform would help us develop more pride in our school.
In general, those schoolboys who will study in the school of the future will be lucky.
The creative team of our project made a virtual tour to the School of the Future. Our dream is: our children and your grandchildren will study in the school for talented people.
Look! This is what we dream about: a large light hall. There is a glass ceiling which protects from rain and snow. Do you find it wonderful? In the evening it is turn into a concert hall. There is electronic library, where you can find any book you like. There is also a place for meditation and astronomic observations.
There is green grass in the yard. You can get into any place of the school from the yard. There is also the electronic board and timetable in the central part of the yard. You can easily read all the school news, about the best school students. It’s noisy and merry in the yard. One can hear the school radio working. There are also comfortable benches and soft, cozy chairs here. It is possible to do exhibitions in daytime here. In the evening students usually have discos. This school has not only technological equipment and technological novelty. The main idea is the opportunity of the choice: students choose themselves subjects for studying; create menu in the canteen; create even the furniture in the own room for relaxation.
We wish some of our ideas would become real; some of them would be the base for the following thoughts and ideas. That’s OK! We pass the estafette to everyone who is indifferent to the problems and interests of modern Russian education!
CONCLUSION
The Role of School in My Life
My Advices to Students
Anyway, I'm sure I’ll always remember my school years and the friendships I have made at school.
School days are the happiest days of the whole life. School life has its disadvantages such as getting up early in the morning every day, writing too much tests and doing too much homework, worrying about having good marks; depending on teacher's mood and etc. But I think that school days have more advantages than disadvantages. At school we can learn a lot of interesting things know a lot about the world and find real friends for the whole life. School prepares children for their future adult life, develops their mind and imagination. It also helps to choose future profession. That's why we have so many subjects at school. So I am sure that school days are very difficult but happy days.
