Music is part of our lives. It's all around us. Every country in the world has its own special kind of music. Each kind of music is different and tells us about the place it comes from and the people who play and listen to it.
The aim of our lesson for today is to develop your listening skills, the ability to discuss different points of view, to give your own point of view, to revise some grammar material.

- Who is your favourite musician?
- What makes him / her special to you?
- We shall make a short test just to warm you up on prepositions, adjectives with -ed and -ing endings, question tags.

- rap, reggae, rock, gospel, country, classical opera, jazz, pop, heavy metal
- rap - is when a person talks rhythmically and continuously to musical accompaniment.
- reggae - comes from Jamaica in the Caribbean. It is called the music of the poor, because the songs are about the problems the people have.
- gospel - religious music.
- country - is from America. Each song tells a story about modern life, love, and feelings.
- classical opera - classicism as a movement in art appeared in France in the 17th century. It is marked by the beauty of form good taste clarity and reserve.

B: Listening to rock music.
A: Really? What else apart from listening to rock music makes you feel excited?
B: Listening to country music.
VI. Now, you will listen to the tape recorder. You will hear three different people talking about music they like. Listen to the tape and complete the table. (check your answers)
VII. I think all of you know the song "Love Me Tender", at least you've heard it. You will hear two singers performing this song. Listen to them please and say which of them you like better and why. (песня "Love Me Tender")
VIII. As far as you understand we are going to start now the discussion of the creative work of E.P. There is a song in his repertoire which is called "Welcome to My World". Let's start with this song. ("Welcome to My World")
IX. Elvis burst into the American music scene and teenagers everywhere took him to their hearts.
Part of Elvis's appeal was that he was a mass of contradictions. He appeared shy and polite, he sang gospel with true feelings, he was a loving son of his mother, but he was also an audacious youth who encouraged teenagers to rebel.
Despite his polite, shy and humble image Elvis had a reputation for never turning a woman away from his door. He loved all the attention.
To continue this talk about Elvis Presley we invited two remarkable people:
one is Mrs Parker from Harvard University and another one is Mrs Jones from Oxford University.
As far as I know Mrs Parker is a great fan of Elvis Presley. Let's begin with you.
Mrs Parker: Yes, that's true. I think E P was a unique person. Otherwise people wouldn't call him the King of Rock'n'Roll. Elvis woke up the whole generation
His records were blockbusters, so were his concerts. He brought healthy sexuality to music. When he started out he was all on his own. It took time, energy, patience to say what he wanted to the world. He challenged us to change. He never cheated. He always gave his best. When he died 80,ooo people came to attend his funeral. (отрывок о похоронах Э.П.)
Radio and TV programs all over the world interrupted to inform people about his death. I have as a proof a documentary film. You will see a record of his last concert. In six days he died. Sweat streaming down his face as he worked - you can see what looked fun and natural had turned into a job requiring tremendous physical and mental effort. (запись песни "My Way").
Mrs Jones: I can't agree with your statements. I think he was just a wild performer who delighted American teenagers and shocked their parents. In 1960s he rarely appeared in public, I think Elvis on stage was a maniac, swiveling, wiggling, curling his lips. His style was totally primitive and audience reacted to it with shrieks, moans and groans as though they were caught up in the ecstasy of sex. This is the description of one of the concerts: "When Elvis walked on the stage, everyone began to shout, stump and shriek. Extra police were called - they had to stand by helplessly. Who can shut up 3 thousand screaming teenagers? Some girls fell on the floor. Some pulled their hair out of the root. Everyone seemed to go mad".
(сюжет, как публика встречает Э.П.)
Mrs Parker: I want to remind you the words of President Jimmy Carter:
"He was the only king we ever had. E.P. was the king - the king of Rock'n'Roll.
He was a superstar who had been at the top for twenty two years enchanting millions of people. The entire nation mourns an idol. We have lost a friend. E.P. has changed the face of American popular culture. He was unique an irreplaceable.
Mrs Jones: Then I want to remind you what school teachers, and not only they, told people about his performance. They said that E.P. was hurting the teenage generation with his erotic behavior in public. He was introducing to his young generation a new sexual freedom which was declared unhealthy and demoralizing.
"Unfit Hero for Youth" - he was called by press. (сюжет, где осуждают Э.П.)
That's why Edd Sullivan, who was a famous producer of TV shows, declared: 'I don't want him on my show. I don't care what anyone says about him - how great a talent he is - he just won't be on my show and that's that".
Mrs Parker: Yes, it always happens this way when we start something new. Not everybody likes it. By the way, in spite of all his sayings Edd Sullivan had to show Elvis due to his popularity. And he had to recognize that Elvis was a decent young man. (cюжет с Эддом Саливаном)
As for his movement on the stage Elvis himself could never understand why there was a problem. He moved the way he did, because that was what seemed natural to him. "I don't know what happens to me when I sing. I have to move my hands, feet, knees, legs, my head - everything". During the filming of "Jailhouse Rock" a professional dancer Russ Tumblin gave him a few tips to sharpen up his dancing style. So you can enjoy watching him dancing in the film. All the rest performers are professional dancers. (сюжет Jailhouse Rock)
I'm very sorry but we are short of time. Thank you for coming to our program.
It was very interesting to hear your opinions.
