SCOTLAND – BONNIE SCOTLAND
There are two Scotlands.
The first is the modern, dynamic country on the edge of Europe.
The second is the legend of Scotland: the home of whisky, golf and Bagpipes.
Scotland's two busy cities of Glasgow and Edinburgh are the focus of today's country. Both
have benefited from North Sea Oil and have an optimistic view of the future.
Edinburgh, with its castle, its old houses and narrow streets and steps. The monument to
Sir Walter Scott. The famous Princes' Street.
Glasgow, the industrial heart of Scotland. A huge city, with energy and enthusiasm.
Shipbuilding was once a great industry. But now it has been replaced by new, high
technology industries, and by commerce and tourism.
New hotels and offices are changing the way Glasgow looks.
And poor quality housing is being demolished.
Many older streets and buildings have been improved.
Outside the two main cities there is some beautiful scenery: mountains, glens and lochs.
And there are more castles, like this one at Stirling To the north and west lie remote and
unspoilt islands.
The history of Scotland is marked at every step by the history of England.
Scotland and England have fought many, many wars.
The last and most famous ended at Culloden when the English defeated the army of Bonnie
Prince Charlie.
The Prince escaped to the Isle of Skye and then to France.
One of Scotland's most beautiful songs was written about him crossing over to the Isle of
Skye.
Here are two of Scotland's best known products: whisky, to drink: haggis, to eat. Both are
part of Scottish tradition.
One final tradition is the Loch Ness Monster. Most people don't believe in it.

You know that every country has its capital. The capital of Scotland is Edinburgh. We
go on our trip. Let’s visit Edinburgh. It is very interesting to listen

What do you know about the history of Edinburgh? What can you say about its parts?
P1: Edinburgh is a capital of Scotland since the 15 century. It was an
important strategic centre in Scottish wars. Its population is 470 000. It is
very proud but friendly. Edinburgh has a great past. It is an ancient city and you can
touch on history at every step in Edinburgh. Practically every building has a tale to
tell.
The two most interesting parts of the city are the Old Town and the New Town. The Old Town
is situated on the Castle Rock. The New Town was built to the north of the Castle in the
18 century and was linked with the Old Town by bridges.
The Old Town is a striking contrast to the New Town. It has many beautiful streets lined
with trees. Princes Street is the most beautiful street in the New Town. It has a lot of
gardens and it is also a popular shopping centre in Edinburgh. Princes Street lies between
the New Town and the Old Town.
Edinburgh is the finest city in Europe which is hardly changed for century.

The Castle is situated on the Castle Rock. It is older than the city. No one can say
exactly when the first settlers came to live on the huge rock. They built a castle there.
It was used as a fortress and then a royal palace. It is very beautiful and at night it
looks like a castle in a fairy tale. Many tourists visit it with great interest
P3: Another interesting place is Holyrood House. Holyrood House is
a big royal palace. It is the residence of the Queen when she is in Edinburgh. As many
other buildings it is an example of beautiful architecture and design. You can get there
along the Royal Mile.
T: Edinburgh is associated with the names of George Byron, Walter Scott, Robert Burns and
others. It is also associated with the world famous Edinburgh Festival of Music and Drama.
P4: Walter Scott is a famous Scottish writer. His monument is situated in
Princes Street. The monument is very high, it rises between green trees. People call it a
poem of stone because it is unusual, attractive and romantic. There is a marble statue of
the writer inside of the monument. Walter Scott had his favourite dog and you can see it
near the writer.
