Objectives:

By the end of the lesson pupils should be able to compare life in the city and in the country using degrees of comparison of adjectives.

Pupils will practice:

  • vocabulary on the topic “The city and the countryside”;
  • grammar (comparison of adjectives);
  • listening for specific information;
  • speaking.

I. Introduction.

Pupils see Slide 1 of the presentation Power Point .Teacher:”Today at the lesson we’ll try to decide where it is better to live: in the city or in the country. You’ll get some information about cities and the countryside. Then we’ll compare life in the city and in the country but before this we’ll have to review some grammar material (comparison of adjectives).

Slide 2. Teacher: “How many people live in cities? Look at the screen. Yes, 35% of the population of the world live in cities. More than 2000 cities have the population of more than a million people. And there are some cities which have about or even more than 10 million people. Do you know such cities?” (pupils give their answers)

Teacher: “Yes, they are Moscow, London, New York, Tokyo, Mexico City and others”.
Slide 3. Teacher: “But still lots of people prefer living in the country: beautiful and peaceful”.
Slide 4. Teacher: “What can you see in cities?” (Pupils comment pictures appearing one after another: factories, theatres, cinemas, museums, restaurants, universities, hotels).
Slide 5. Teacher: “What can you see in the country?”
Pupils: “Farms, forest, fields, wooden houses”.

II. Revision of grammar material: (comparison of adjectives).

Slide 6. Teacher: “Let’s remember how to compare adjectives. Look at the table in the screen. Do you know the rule?”

(Pupils try to say the rule of comparison of adjectives. The teacher helps them).

Teacher: “Now I’ll give you cards with some adjectives which you will need to compare life in the city and in the country. Write the comparative and superlative degrees of these adjectives”.

(Pupils fill in the cards)

Slide 7. Teacher: “Now look at the screen and check yourselves”.

(Pupils check their works).

III. Development of habits in listening.

Teacher: “Now you’ll listen to the dialogue between two girls: Kate and Amy. Kate has just come back to London from a holiday trip. After listening say where Kate has spent her holidays; if she liked her staying there and why”.

Tapescript: (Cassette to the textbook “Click On. 3”. Unit 4.)
Amy: “Kate, you’re back I. Did you have a good time?”
Kate: “Yes, thanks. York is so beautiful!”
Amy: “Were you able to relax, then?
Kate: “Oh, definitely. It’s much quieter and cleaner than London”.
Amy: “How’s that?
Kate: “Well, for one thing, cars aren’t allowed in the city centre during the day so there’s less noise and pollution”.
Amy: “That’s great. What did you do there?
Kate: “I visited the museums and did some shopping. The antique shops there are fantastic”.
Amy: “Sounds great!
Kate: “Yes, except when I got there I realized I had forgotten to take my camera, so I don’t have any photos to sow you”.
Amy: “Never mind. You’ll just have to go again, won’t you?”

(Pupils may listen to the cassette twice if necessary)

Teacher: “So, where did Kate go?”
Pupils: “To York”.
Teacher: “Yes, to York. York isn’t a city. It’s a small town in England to the North of London. Did she like it there?”
Pupils: “Yes, she did”.
Teacher: “Why?”
Pupils: “Because York is quieter and cleaner than London”.
Teacher: “Why?”
Pupils: “Because cars aren’t allowed in the city centre. During the day, so there’s less pollution and noise”.

IV. Development of habits in speaking.

The teacher devides the class into two groups.

Teacher: “Now let’s speak about life in the city and in the country. Look at the screen!”

Slide 8.Teacher: ”You can see a table.Use the nouns and adjectives given in it to make sentences about life in the city (group A) and life in the country or in a small town (group B) Follow the example which you can see in Slide 9.

Pupils make up sentences in groups. Then each member of one group says his/her sentence and a pupil from the other group replies it.

E.g.

Pupil 1: ”Life in the city is quieter.”
Pupil 2: ”Yes, you are right, but it is more boring”

The pupils are also given cards with linking words:

On one side… – с одной стороны;
On the other side… – с другой стороны;
Though – хотя;
Yes,but still – тем не менее;
What’s more – более того ;
So – итак.

V. Conclusion.

Teacher: ”According to your ideas it is impossible to decide where it is better to live. Each variant has ifs advantages and disadvantages.

So, it’s up to you to decide which is a better place for you!

Homework: Give a 2 – minute talk about your opinion on the problem: which is a better place to live: a city or the countryside?
