1. Does smoking cause troubles?
2. Is it easy to give up smoking?
Words to be introduced before listening
Lung cancer – рак легких, osteoporosis – остеопороз, заболевания опорно-двигательного аппарата.
Stop smoking
If you smoke, stopping is the most effective action you can take to improve your health. All forms of smoking are bad for you; it increases your risk of health disease, lung disease (especially bronchitis and lung cancer) and, later life, osteoporosis (thinning of bones). It also reduces your chance of survival after a heart attack.
One in every five fatal heart attacks is smoking related. Smoking is directly responsible every year for about 26000 deaths in England from lung cancer and over three times this number from other diseases.
Smoking can harm those close to you, too; those who breathe your children, can become ill as a result.
You may think that stopping smoking will not be easy. On the other hand, you will never know until you try. In recent years, more that 11 million smokers in Britain have kicked the habit. Nine out of them tried several times before succeeding. And for most, the first few days were the worst!
After that, the compensations make it all worthwhile. You are healthier and breathe more easily, you can taste food again, you don’t smell of smoke and you feel like a winner!
After the second listening students do the task –they correct false sentences
True or false
- Not all forms of smoking are bad for you.
- Smoking increases only heart disease.
- A person can recover after a heart attack if he smokes.
- 260 people die from smoking in England.
- Smoking is all right to those close to you.
- Children can become ill if they breathe your smoke.
- In recent years 11000 smokers in Britain have stopped smoking.
- You are healthier and can taste food again after you have stopped smoking.
- 8 out of 10 have stopped smoking without medical advice.
The teacher can also check understanding the text by asking questions
- What diseases does smoking increase?
- If a person smokes can he recover after a heart attack?
- How many people die out of smoking in Britain?
- Can smoke harm those close to you? Whom?
- Does your best friend smoke?
- What is your attitude to smoking?
- Have any of your friends given up smoking?
8. Teacher:” You have done a lot today, expressed your ideas, worked in groups. Your marks are. I hope in future you’ll eat healthy food and won’t have bad habits.
