ACT I
Penguins are getting ready for Christmas.
Penguin Tidy: (looking at the stars through a telescope). Oh, my!
Christmas is coming. We have a lot of work to do.
We should get everything ready for Christmas but we haven’t got even a Christmas tree. Hey! Where are you, my friends? Penguin Naughty, Penguin Beauty, Penguin Sleepy and Penguin Smarty. (Calls them).
Penguin Beauty: Here I am. What is it, Tidy?
Tidy: Where are the rest?
Beauty: I think they are fishing. I saw them at the shore about half an hour ago. Why, what’s the matter?
Tidy: Don’t you know? Christmas is coming. We are not ready. There are lots of things to do: to sweep the ice, to trim the snowdrifts, to make the stars shine brighter, to decorate a Christmas tree.
Beauty: How thoughtful of you! But how can we decorate a Christmas tree? There aren’t any fur-trees in the Antarctica.
Tidy: We can make it out of snow.
Beauty: Good idea. The weather is wonderful. The snow is easy to mold. It is summer now.
Tidy: Oh, yes. It is not as cold in summer as in winter. The temperature is only ten degrees below zero. We celebrate Christmas and New Year in summer in the Antarctica.
Enter: Naughty and Smarty. (Carrying a bucket of fish).
Together: Here we are! What’s the matter?
Tidy: Don’t you know? Christmas is coming. Let’s get ready for it together.
Naughty: Christmas? What’s Christmas. Is it a big fish?
Smarty: Don’t be so silly. It’s a great holiday. They decorate a Christmas tree, get presents and eat tasty food.
Naughty: Do they eat fish?
Smarty: You don’t know anything but fish. There are lots of tasty things for Christmas…..
Tidy: Be quick! Let’s get ready for the holiday. Take brooms, dusters, and spades.
(The penguins are tidying up and dancing merrily, they find Sleepy).
Sleepy (stretching himself): Good morning! What’s that noise? Is it an earthquake? What are you all doing?
Penguins: We are getting ready for Christmas!
Sleepy (digging with a spade finds somebody): Look! There is somebody here.
(The penguins get together hiding Hare).
Beauty: Oh, poor thing! It is almost frozen.
Tidy: It doesn’t look like anything we know.
Naughty: May be it’s a big fish?
Sleepy: Let alone the fish! The thing is sleeping. Don’t wake it.
Smarty: It looks like a strange animal. Let’s make it warm.
(Everybody is dancing together with Hare. The audience is dancing too).
Hare: Thank you, I feel warm. I am so glad to see you… But who are you? Where am I? Why is it so cold here?
Penguins: We are penguins. We are in the Antarctica.
Naughty: Who are you? Are you a big white fish with long ears?
Hare: I am a hare. I live in the forest. I change my coat twice a year. I like carrot and cabbage. I can jump and run very fast. I am afraid of wolves and foxes. Do you have wolves or foxes in the Antarctica?
Smarty: No, we don’t. But there are sharks and seal-leopards here. We are afraid of them. We dive in the sea and catch fish. We like it very much.
Beauty: We are birds but we cannot fly. But we are good swimmers.
Tidy: Do you celebrate Christmas and New Year?
Hare: Yes, of course. These holidays are in winter. It often snows in winter. It is often frosty and windy. It is cold in winter just like now.
Naughty: No, you are wrong. It is warm and nice. It is summer now.
Sleepy: May be it is summer and winter at once?
Smarty: Stop arguing. When it’s winter in the North, it’s summer in the South. Let’s go on working!
