T. - I see, you know the names of some Russian painters. But what do you know about their lives and creative activity?

/Приложение 2: Презентация “Understanding art”/

Т. – Angelina, you have worked excellent!

Girls, did you like the story in her presentation?

Well, why have you chosen S. Roеrich’s creative activity, his masterpieces.

A. – As for my choice it was not by any chance. A month ago I visited the painter’s exhibition in Yoshkar – Ola and was very glad to see his wonderful works. My impressions were brilliant! That’s why I decided to make this project.

2. T. - Well done. Thank you!

Girls! And what about your dialogues to our unit? What have you learnt about the lives and work of some English painters? It was your home task. Let’s check it, girls! Who is ready?

Well, Alyona and Olesya. Begin, please! The other students will listen to the girls and then answer some questions.

Dialogue between Alyona and Olesya:

- Hello, Alyona! How are you?

- Hi, Olesya! Thanks, OK!

- Alyona! What are you doing now? Can you help me?

- Well, what’s the matter?

- I would like to know some facts about John Constable? Have you  heard about him? The teacher gave us the quiz with some questions.

- You see, as far as I know J.Constable was an English painter, one of the greatest British landscape artists. Fortunately, I have a book with articles about some foreign painters. Let’s look through it!

- Great! And what about his education as a painter?

- Well, let’s find. Oh, it’s here. He decided to be an artist only in 1799, when he joined the Royal Schools, and it was not until 1829 that he was made a full Academician.

- Alyona, one more thing! When did he begin to win recognition and when was it?

- Well, during the 1820s he began to win recognition especially when his painting “The Hay Wain” won a gold medal at the Paris Salon of 1824.

- Oh, a gold medal! It’s great! Did he live in Paris then?

- It’s interesting to note that he never went abroad and even to Paris.

And what is more, his finest works were of the places he knew and loved best, where he lived from 1821.

- Alyona! What thoughts can you find about a tendency to praise a full-sketch in   painting?

- You see! I’ve found! Well, listen to! In the 20-th century there has been a tendency to praise such sketches even more highly than the finished because of their freedom and freshness of brushwork.

- It’s interesting to learn about the painter’s manner of work. But where did he work extensively?

- It’s written in the article that John Constable liked the open air to work, drawing and sketching in oil, but his finished paintings were produced in the studio.

-  I see Constable was a famous painter. But did he have an influence on other painters? What can you find in the book about this fact?

- There is the fact that he had a major influence on Romantic painters such as Delacroix as well as on the members of the Barbizon School, and ultimately on the Impressionists.

- All these facts proof ones more that Constable was a talented painter not only in his country but also in the world. Thank you for your useful information! You’ve helped me very much! Thanks a lot!

- Well, it’s not me, but the book was our magic wand! Good luck! Bye!

- See you later!

Т. - All right! Thanks, girls!

- Girls, boys! Do you like the dialogue?

- What is the main idea of it?

- Do you agree with the proverb “A friend in need is a friend indeed”?

- We say that the book is our friend, don’t we? What are your opinions?

As for the dialogue, I like it very much.

3. - So, we have spoken about professional art and great artists.

But drawing may be a hobby too. For example, your classmates Snezhana, Liliya, Alyona are good at drawing . Let’s listen to the Snezhana’s story about her hobby.

Snezhana: As for me, I have always had a desire to draw. I had a talented teacher – Wladimir Albertovich Pavlov. He did his best to teach us as well as he can. We drew during the lessons, after them and at home. That’s why my favourite lesson at school in the 7th form was Drawing. I was very happy to take part in different competitions and to have success. I was proud of my pictures as well as my teacher. Now I think that this hobby will help me in my life, in my future.

Here are some of my pictures.

- OK, Snezhana! Your story is really interesting and your pictures are nice! Do you like them, Wladimir?

- Of course, I do! I know Snezhana draws very well, she is a talented  girl. She wasn’t only a participant of the competitions but also a winner!

- Thanks, Wladimir for your opinion! It’s wonderful to have such a hobby!

It’s great! We wish Snezhana and her friends good luck!

4. T. - Well, girls and boys! Speaking about fine art, painters and their master-pieces we have to try to describe their works. Soon it will be our task. That’s why let’s train to do it now. Use the questions on the sheets of papers as the plan of describing a picture or a painting.

How to interpret a work of art:

  1. What is the artist’s name? (When did / does he live? What country was/ is he from? What style of paintings did / does he draw?)
  2. What is the name of the painting? What is the style of the painting? (Still life, landscape, sea-scape, genre scenes, battle scenes…)
  3. What is the first thing that catches your eye?
  4. What can you see in the painting? (People, objects, things…)
  5. What can you see in the background?
  6. What can you see in the foreground?
  7. What are the colours, shades, techniques of the painting?
  8. What do you think about the painter’s aim?
  9. What feelings and emotions does the painting give you?
  10. Do you like it? Why?

Useful language:

In the background To the right… At the top of the painting..
In the foreground To the left…. At the bottom of the painting..
Just above the… In the top left hand corner… Next to…/Near the…
Just below the… In the bottom right hand corner… In the middle of the painting….

Т. - Marina, help us! Look at the picture and your classmates ask you these questions. Use word combinations from the pattern. Start, please!

Т. - Well. You’ve tried to do your best! Thanks!

It will be the task for all to describe your favourite picture for the next lesson in the written form.

IV. Конец урока.

1. – You have worked much and hard. I liked your answers and I am pleased with your marks. They are…Thank you! Well done!

2. – Your homework will be: to read the text about Picasso and to learn the new words,  to describe your favourite picture with the help of the plan in the written   form, to repeat the dialogues about the Tretyakov gallery.

3. - Our lesson is over! Thank you very much! See you later!
