1. Warming-up

T: Good morning, children! As you know ‘Travel broadens the mind’. What does it mean for you?

S1: When you travel you meet a lot of people.

S2: You can see a lot of interesting places.

S3: You can visit museums and galleries.

S4: You can try the local cuisine.

S5: You can get a lot of knowledge.

2. Work with the map of Alaska

T: Today we are going to travel. Alaska will be the point of our destination.

What do you know about it?

S1: Alaska is the largest state of the USA.

S2: Alaska is situated in North America.

S3: Alaska is one of two states, which are outside the borders of the main nation

T: Now, children, please, look at the map of Alaska and try to answer my questions. What is the capital city of Alaska?

S1: It’s Juneau.

T: What country borders Alaska on the east?

S2: Canada borders Alaska on the east.

T: What ocean borders Alaska on the north?

S3: The Arctic Ocean borders Alaska on the north.

T: What ocean borders Alaska on the south?

S4: The Pacific Ocean borders Alaska on the south.

T: What country is just west of Alaska, across the Bering Strait?

S5: Russia is just west of Alaska across the Bering Strait.

T: What is the name of the tallest mountain in Alaska (it’s also the tallest peak in North America)?

S6: Mt McKinley is the tallest mountain in Alaska.

3. Reading

T: Our group is planning to fly onto a mountain then we want to ski down the mountain. If we are going to fly what should we know?

S: We should know the weather.

T: You are quite right. And I’d like to see if you know the weather vocabulary. Please, look at the text and try to match each weather word to the correct definition.

4. Before watching the video

T: I’d like to tell you that there’s only one thing that’s certain about the weather in Alaska - it changes all the time! Sometimes there’s rain, sometimes there’s wind and sometimes there’s snow. Sometimes the weather is just fine with lots of sunshine. So today the weather has changed. We can’t fly. The clouds are too low. And I suggest climbing a glacier - Matanuska Glacier. Please, look at your maps and find it. What do you know about glaciers?

S1: It’s a huge mass of ice, which moves very slowly, often down the mountain.

S2: The largest glaciers in the world are the polar ice caps of Antarctica and Greenland.

T: What are some dangerous things about glaciers?

S1: They can melt.

S2: You can slip and fall down.

S3: You can be frozen.

T: Now, let’s start our journey. We’ll watch a video about Matanuska Glacier. Before watching look at the blackboard, please. Here you can see the new words:

serac - a large piece of glacial ice;
cirque - a round opening in the ice;
crampon - a type of climbing tool for ice or snow that fits on the shoe;
stable - strong, secure;
ornery - bad;

5. While watching

T: Now, pupils, let’s watch a video. The first task will be to find the main idea from the list below:

1. Many visitors like to go to Alaska for outdoor holidays.

2. The weather in Alaska is very cold most of the year.

3. On a sports holiday in Alaska, you must be careful.

6. After watching

T: You have just watched the video. Let’s discuss the main idea.

S1: I think it can’t be the first one because we didn’t see a lot of visitors. So I suppose it’s number 3.

S2: I think the main idea is number 3 because the weather in Alaska is changeable, so the main idea can’t be number 2.

S3: Besides, we saw that climbing glaciers is very dangerous and you must be very careful if you want to climb it and have a sports holiday.

7. Watching the video for the second time

T: Now, pupils, we’ll watch the first part of the video again and fill in the numbers in the sentences:

1.’Matanuska is a very big glacier. It’s…………..miles long and ……………miles wide’.

2. ‘It formed …………… years ago, but it’s always changing’.

3. ‘The group gets ready to climb one of Matanuska’s formations, a …………-foot wall of ice’.

(pupils watch the first part of the video)

S1: The first answer is 27.

S2: The second answer is 2.

S3: The third answer is 2,000.

S4: The fourth answer is 30.

8. After watching exercisers

T: Let’s divide into groups of three. You are going to climb a glacier in Alaska, like the one you have just seen in the video. The climb will take one day. You can only carry a small backpack. You should agree on a list of 5 things to carry in your backpack.

SS: We would like to take a rope which will help us to climb, a warm jacket because it can be cold in the mountains, some food to eat, special glasses to protect our eyes, an ice axe not to fall down.

SS: We would like to take a compass not to lose our way, warm boots because it can be cold, a rope and ice axe to help us climb a glacier, a radio station to contact with our leader, crampons not to fall down.

9. Reading

T: Now, children, let’s read the text and find out what expert climbers take with them when they climb a glacier.

10. After reading

T: Would you like to compare your lists of things with the list of things expert climbers take with them.

S1: We would like to take a rope and expert climbers too.

S2: We chose an ice axe and expert climbers too.

S3: We suggested taking crampons as expert climbers did.

T: So I think you are quite ready to climb a glacier.

11. Communicative activity

T: As you know there are a lot of travel agencies which suggest taking holidays in Alaska. There are three of them. And these are their advertisements.

SS: We would like to choose the third one. We like sport very much. We are young and strong and want to learn how to climb mountains.

SS: We would like to choose the second one because we like comfort and walking.
