I. The beginning of the lesson.

Good morning, dear pupils & our guests!

We are glad to see you here. We hope you are well.

Today we are having our last lesson on the topic “ Man & Natural World”. The theme of our lesson is “ The Fragile Planet”. What do you think we shall speak about? (Pupils answer)

Yes, we shall speak about ecology, pollution, influence of a man on the environment.

II. The aim of our lesson is to revise the material & to sum it up.

Look at the slides & answer the questions.

T: Now the ecological situation in the world is very serious.

We speak about ecology at our classes & understand the importance of keeping our environment clean, because we want to live& not to die.

III. Introduction to the lesson, motivation.

Today at the lesson you see the pupils of two groups, they will do different tasks together, work in big & small groups, discuss different problems & compete.

IV. Warming – up. Different tasks.

The first task is to remember & write as many words as you can on topic “ Man & Natural World”, beginning with these letters. Turn to each other & work in groups. I’ll give you three minutes. Then pupils of each group will read them in turn.

  • What caused the ______ of wildlife? (destruction, poison, population)
  • Many rivers & lakes are _______. (poisoned, filled, used)
  • Many scientists try to __________ ecological problems. (solve, know, protect)

V. The press conference.

You have coped with all the tasks & now let’s discuss the problem “ The Ecological Situation In Russia & In The Arkhangelsk Region”. We’ll do it in the form of the “ round table”.

The participants of the “ round table” are: a member of the Russian Federation, the head of the region, a weatherman, an ecologist, a member of “Greenpeace", a doctor & representatives of mass media.

Here are samples of the participants’ reports and mass media representatives’ questions: A member of Russian Parliament:

Some days ago I returned from the trip around our country. I visited industrial cities, saw our forests, lakes & rivers, met different people. And I must say that ecological situation in Russia is very dangerous.

The head of the Arkhangelsk Region: The ecological situation in AR is also very serious. We face the same ecological problems as other regions in Russia.

A weatherman: We, weathermen, are worried about the climatic changes. Recently climate has changed a lot in our country. Some scientists think the world is becoming hotter. These changes can be dangerous for our fragile planet.

An ecologist: Man kills birds, animals & destroys their habitats. Forests are cut down for different uses. If we go on like this, soon all the forests on earth will be destroyed.

A member of ”Greenpeace ”: Members of our organization appear in places where some disasters have come. Now we are in your country, in the Crimea. Some days ago there was a storm in the Kerch Channel, in the Black Sea. Many ships suffered from the storm. Some sailors died, ships were ruined & oil was spilt over the water. So fish was poisoned, birds are in danger. I think they won’t survive!

A doctor: It may sound funny to you, but man needs protection & care as much as birds &animals do. Nowadays people suffer from serious diseases & die early, their children are born weak because of the ecology. No medicines prescribed by the doctors can help them. This problem becomes more &more serious with every passing year.

Representatives of Mass Media (correspondents of magazines, newspapers, radio, TV) & different guests.

Questions to the MP:

  • What are the most serious ecological problems now?
  • In your opinion, is pollution a very serious problem nowadays?
  • What seas & oceans are in danger? Why?

  • Why are cars dangerous for the people in towns & cities?
  • What does our government do to solve ecological problems?

Questions to the head of the Arkhangelsk Region:

  • Is water in the Northern Dvina safe to drink? Can children & their parents swim in the river in summer?

  • Is it true that the northern seas are used as the burial of nuclear wastes?
  • What natural resources are discovered on the territory of the AR?
  • What measures are taken to improve the ecological situation in the AR ?

Questions to the weatherman:

  • How do you collect the information about the weather?
  • Are weather forecasts important for people? People of what professions are interested in weather forecasts? Why?
  • What can you say about the climate in Russia?
  • What do you know about the greenhouse effect?
  • Why does the atmosphere become warmer?
  • How can the greenhouse effect influence the climate on the planet in future?
  • Do you think our planet needs protection? Why?

Questions to the ecologist:

  • What endangered animals & plants can you name? Why are they disappearing?
  • What is “ The Red Data Book”? (a book on rare & disappearing animals)
  • Why is it red? (The red colour is a danger signal understandable to all people in the world. The red colour is one of blood & life. You should hear the world around you. It calls for help).
  • What is the situation with forests nowadays?
  • How does the disappearance of forests influence the life of people, animals & plants?
  • Why are rainforests so important for the life on the Earth?
  • How can wild plants in savannas, deserts & rainforests help to cure people?

P7: The most important environmental problems are:

  • Pollution in its many forms.
  • Noise from cars, buses, planes.
  • Destruction of wildlife & countryside beauty.
  • Shortage of natural resources.
  • The growth of population.

T: People on the planet suffer from water pollution. Why?

P8: Rivers, seas, oceans are used as dumps. Water is poisoned. Fish cannot live in such water.

T: How does air pollution influence people’s health?

P9: People suffer from acid rains, polluted fir, ultraviolet radiation, nuclear pollution.

T: What is necessary for people’s health?

P10: Clean water & clean air are necessary for people’s health.

T: Can you (young people) help the planet? How? What should you do?

P11: I think young generation can help the planet. We must use these words of advice:

  • Walk or use a bicycle instead of a car.
  • Don’t litter with paper, cans or bottles.
  • Plant more trees.
  • Feed birds in winter& help them survive in cold.
  • Save energy. Use less electricity & gas.
  • Clean rubbish from lakes & rivers.
  • Have showers, not baths. Showers use less water.

VII. Project activity.

T: Your attitude to the environmental problems is also very important. Let’s see some of your projects. Make notes & choose the best & the most important one. (смотри приложение №2)

VIII. Creative tasks (literary translation & designing a poster).

During our lessons we learn a lot of poems. And one of them is devoted to our fragile planet.

Recite it.

IT’S A SMALL WORLD.

It’s a world of laughter, a world of tears.
It’s a world of hopes and a world of fears.
There’s so much that we share,
That is the time that we are aware.
It’s a small world after all.
There’s just one moon and one golden sun
And a smile means friendship to everyone.
Though the mountains divide
And the oceans are wide,
It’s a small world after all.

Let’s read the literary translation of the pupil of the 7B form Gusak Artem.

The last task is to design a poster & a slogan in a group telling people about ecological problems of the day. Pupils work in two groups &then describe & explain their posters.

IX. Homework.

Your homework is to create your own poster & explain your choice.

Thank you for the lesson. You all have worked hard & tried to do your best.
