Part I (p. 1-3)

I. Pre-questions

Listen to the cassette and choose the right words each time.

The Darlings lived in a big house in (London/Washington). They (were/weren’t) an ordinary family. The first unusual thing about them was that instead of having a real nursemaid, they had a big (dog/cat) called Nana to take care of their children. The second unusual thing was that they all, except (Mr./Mrs.) Darling believed that Peter Pan really existed.

One evening Mr. Darling couldn’t find his cuff-links to go out to the (cinema/theatre). (John/Wendy) remembered that they’d taken them to use as treasure in one of their games, which had been part of the story Wendy had told the boys about Peter Pan. Vocabulary Exercises

Most verbs in English belong to either of two types:

intransitive verbs or transitive verbs.

An intransitive verb doesn’t have an object. It can’t be used in the passive.

A transitive verb must have an object. Without the object, the sentence

doesn’t make sense.

The verb rise means go up, become more. It is irregular and intransitive.

e.g. They rose from their seats.

Raise sth means make sth rise, collect money.

The verb is regular and transitive.

e.g. Pupils usually raise their hands at the lesson.
