“Урок – “клеточка” педагогического процесса. В нём как солнце в капле воды, отражаются все его стороны. Если не вся, то значительная часть педагогики концентрируется в уроке”

М.Н. Скаткин

Tell me and I forget; show me and I may not remember; involve me and I will understand. (American saying)

Цель: создать комфортные условия учащимся для подготовки монологического высказывания по теме “Знаменитые люди”

Americans still remember the wife of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. She took an active role in the American public life. Eleanor Roosevelt was born in New York in 1884. She had a lonely childhood. Though her family was well-known in America, her uncle Theodore Roosevelt was the 26th president of the United States, she personally felt very unhappy. Once Eleanor said that she was the “ugly duckling” in a family of beautiful people. Her mother called her “granny” because she was very serious and never smiled. She loved her parents very much but her father made her life miserable. He had a drinking problem and spent much time in hospital.

When Eleanor was 15 she went to England to study in an English school. After her return to New York she was a teacher for a short time. At that time Eleanor began the social activities that would make her so famous. Her husband, F. D. Roosevelt, became president in 1932. By that time Eleanor had become known in the USA for her social work. She didn’t stop her activities and continued them after the death of her husband in 1945. Her years alone were active and productive years. Not only in the United States, but in countries around the world, she was a symbol for hope and help.

T. Is the text interesting?

P 6. As for me the text is interesting but I didn’t understand a few sentences.

T. Well, let us translate the text in pairs. (учащиеся переводят текст в парах)

T. Was it easier to work in pairs? Think about your work. Well, now you are ready to answer the questions.

P 7. It is the 4th point of our plan.

T. You are right. Look at the blackboard, read the questions and answer them:

  1. Did Eleanor Roosevelt take an active role in the American public life?
  2. When and where was Eleanor Roosevelt born?
  3. Did she have a lonely childhood?
  4. Was her family well-known?
  5. Why did Eleanor’s mother call her “granny”?
  6. Did Eleanor love her parents?
  7. Where did Eleanor go when she was 15?
  8. Was Eleanor a teacher for a shot time?
  9. When did Eleanor’s husband F. D. Roosevelt become president?
  10. Was she a symbol for hope and help in countries around the world?

T. Was it difficult for you to do this task? What shall we do next?

P 8. We’ll agree or disagree with you.

T. It is the next point of our plan. Please agree or disagree with me:

  1. Eleanor Roosevelt took an active role in the American public life.
  2. Eleanor Roosevelt was born in the USA in 1875.
  3. Eleanor’s childhood was happy.
  4. Her family was well-known.
  5. Eleanor’s mother called her “granny” because she was not serious.
  6. Eleanor loved her parents.
  7. When Eleanor was 15 she went to America to study in American school.
  8. After her return to New York she was a doctor.
  9. Her husband, F. D. Roosevelt, became president in 1932.
  10. Not only in the United States, but in countries around the world, she was a symbol for hope and help.

T. Did you like this task? Was it difficult for you? And now the next point of our plan. What are we going to do now?

P 9. We are going to make sentences.

T. Please make sentences with the following words: (каждое слово показывается отдельно на карточке)

  1. public
  2. to be born
  3. lonely
  4. well-known
  5. smile
  6. miserable
  7. study
  8. return
  9. become
  10. around

T. Was it easy or difficult for you to do this task? And now it’s high time to play.

P10. But our next point is to find nouns, verbs and adjectives.

T. You are right. But let us work in groups. The first group will find nouns, the second one will find verbs, and the third group will find adjectives. (группы выбирают существительные, прилагательные и глаголы; отвечают, дополняя друг друга)

T. You have done the task well. You are so clever. Are you ready to retell the text about Eleanor Roosevelt? (1-2 ученика пересказывают текст)

T. Dasha, thank you for your answer. I’m satisfied with your work. You will help me at the next lesson because your classmates will continue working at this task at home. It was really difficult for some pupils to tell about Eleanor Roosevelt. They need some time. Be ready with the questions, you will be a “teacher”. Pupils you may use additional material about Eleanor Roosevelt. Take, please, one more text about her.

ELEANOR ROOSEVELT

(1884-1962)

All over the world, Eleanor Roosevelt was known as dedicated worker for human rights. As a public figure and as a speaker and writer, she worked for social causes all her life.

Anna Eleanor Roosevelt was born in 1884. Her parents died when she was young and she was brought up by her grandmother.

As a young girl, she became interested in helping people. She worked in an organization which helped immigrants.

When she was 21, she married Franklin D. Roosevelt, who later became President of the United States.

Eleanor Roosevelt always supported the career of her husband. When in 1921 Franklin was paralyzed by polio, Eleanor Roosevelt helped to keep him interested in politics by attending meetings and telling him what she heard and saw. By the time her husband became governor of New York in 1928, Eleanor Roosevelt had become a public figure herself.

She was known as a leader in the field of rights for working women and in the field of education. During the twelve years of her husband’s presidency (1933 – 1945) Eleanor Roosevelt traveled widely, finding out for the President how people lived and what they needed. She wrote books and articles about her life in the White House.

After her husband’s death, Eleanor Roosevelt worked for international human rights. Until her death in 1962, she continued to work for the causes she believed in. Her tireless fight for human rights won the respect of people around the world.

T. We have done all points of the plan. And now we have got some time to listen to the tape recorder. Be ready to answer the question what this story is about. (ученики слушают запись, она имеется на кассете-приложении к учебнику)

Charles Ludwidge Dodgson was a popular British writer. His pen name was Lewis Carroll. He was born in 1832 in England. He went to school in Rugby. At home during his holidays he had fun and wrote for their home magazine. The magazine had his comic poems. After school he went to Oxford. He studied Maths there. After the university he wrote mathematical textbooks and comic stories. Children know his most famous book “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland”.

P 11. This text is about Lewis Carroll.

T. You are right. Don’t be late on Friday and we’ll know more about him. All the best to you! And now write on these sheets of paper your impressions to the lesson.
