“When in Rome, do as the Romans do”
Teacher: Good morning, dear guests and dear children. Glad to see you. The theme of our lesson today is “When in Rome, do as the Romans do”. Wherever you may be, you should follow the manners and customs of the place you are living in, or the people you are living with. Today the pupils will show their knowledge of the English language, English traditions and customs. Our lesson will be unusual. We’ll make a voyage to England. You know that Great Britain is an island, that’s why we’ll travel by ship. Three crews will do their best to reach the island. The first one will get a prize. The captain of the first crew will be … , the captain of the second one- …, and the captain of the third crew will be… . Our jury … will tell us the result. On our way we’ll call at several ports in order to lay in store for our voyage. Our ships will drop anchors at the Island of Mysterious Symbols, the Island of Good Manners, the Island of Pets, the Island of Rest and Pleasure, the Island of English Traditions and Customs and the Island of Erudites. So, let’s start. (Music) We are getting into the open sea. Look! How beautiful it is! The sky is blue, the sun is shining, the weather is fine. I hope our voyage will be pleasant and enjoyable. Now we are approaching an island. I see some mysterious symbols on it. And I see a note on the shore. The queen of the island wants to check your knowledge of the English words. She asks you to do some tasks. After that she will give us food and other necessary things.
The Island of Mysterious Symbols
The first task is: using the phonetic symbols write down the words and their translation:
1) to the first crew (host, to introduce, to worry, law, rescue home)
2) to the second (to show, to look for, useful, firework, barrel)
3) to the third one (to stay, to dial, beautiful, bonfire, cellar).
The second task for you: put the letters in the right order, write the words and their translation:
1) tsoh aimlfy (host family);
2) eara deoc (area code);
3) idegu god (guide dog)
We’ve coped with the tasks and continue our journey.
The Island of Good Manners
I see the Island of Good Manners. The Queen of the Island invites us to visit her palace, but she wants to know if we have good manners. Tell her what we can and can’t do in an English house.
You may use the following expressions:
1) take a long hot bath (We can take a long hot bath, but we must ask our host first. We must clean the bathroom after that.)
2) use the phone (We can use the phone, but we must ask our host first. We mustn’t talk long. It’s expensive.)
3) invite your friends for lunch (We can’t invite our friends for lunch. It’s not our home!)
4) use the computer (We can use the computer, but we can’t do it alone. We must ask for help.)
5) come home late (We can’t come home late. The host family will worry.)
6) watch TV (We can watch TV.)
7) make tea ( We can make tea.)
8) make a cake (We can’t make a cake. The kitchen will be very dirty.)
9) get up late (We can get up late but we mustn’t be late for breakfast.)
Thank you. And now the Queen wants to find out if you can speak over the telephone in a proper way.
I wonder, what is the country code for Great Britain? (It’s 44)
And what is the country code for Russia? (It’s 7)
What is the country code for the United States of America? (It’s 1)
You should be polite speaking over the telephone. Act out the dialogues, please.
1. A. – Hello! This is Olga. Can I speak to Tanya?

А – Let’s go to the theatre today!
В – That’s a good idea. Let’s meet in an hour.

A. - Great! Bye!
B. – Bye!
Thank you. The queen of the Island thanks us and wishes us a happy voyage.
The Island of Pets
Our next stop will be at the Island of Pets. English people like pets very much. There is even a special cemetery for animals in London. I am sure you have pets at home too. Will you tell us about your pets, please? Show us your projects, please.
1. I have a pet. It is a dog. His name is Rex. He is a basset. He is 2 years old. He is friendly with cats and dogs and he loves children. He is beautiful, kind and clever. He likes to play with me and sleep. My pet is always there for me. He is my best friend. I love my pet very much. Love me, love my dog!
2. My pet is a cat. Her name is Murka. She is 6 months old. She doesn’t like dogs, she is afraid of them. She is nice and kind. She is very beautiful. She likes to sleep on the sofa and play with me. She is a member of my family. I am always there for my pet. A home with a cat is a happy home.
3. I have got two little guinea-pigs. Their names are Masha and Manya. They are red and white, nice and very funny. They are very fluffy. My guinea-pigs are 6 years old. They like to sleep on the sofa and eat fruit, vegetables and pieces of dried bread. They live in an aquarium with sawdust. I have also got two cats. They didn’t try to eat my guinea-pigs. They are afraid of them. But one of the cats Plyushka ate my small mouse, which lived in a jar. I love my pets very much.
The Queen of the Island is sure now that you like your pets and wishes you good luck.
The Island of Rest and Pleasure
I am sure, you’ve got tired and want to have a rest. We’ve come to the Island of Rest and Pleasure. Let’s have a rest. Each team will sing, dance or play a musical instrument. (It’s great. Thank you.)
