Начало урока.

Приветствие: T: Good Morning children, glad to see you. Our lesson today is devoted as usually to the English language but we’ll not only speak English, we’ll speak about English. Will you read the words of some unknown author ?

P1: English is a language that came from nowhere to conquer the world.(slide1)

T: Do you agree that English has really conquered the world?

P2: Yes I do. It really has.

T: Our task is to prove this saying. And first of all we’ll look at the world map some parts of which are painted in different colors .What are the countries that are painted violet? (slide2)

Учащиеся называют страны - the UK, the USA, Canada , Australia, New Zealand.(slide 3)

T: Why is English spoken in these countries though we know that the birthplace of English is only the UK?

P, P: These countries once were British colonies and the English brought their language and culture there.

T: What role does English play in these countries?

P, P: It is the mother tongue and the official language.

T: You are right .English in these countries is the first language that children learn from their childhood.

T: But we see that English is also spoken in many other countries as well and is the official language in them. What are these countries and where are they? Why is English the official language in them?

P, P: Once they also were British colonies and nowadays they are members of the British Commonwealth .These are such countries as India, Afghanistan, Pakistan, some countries in Africa and South America.(slide 4)

T: English is the official or semiofficial language in these countries that means that it is used in government, in schools.

Besides these two roles English is used for some other reasons. For example it is used as a means to solve different world problems and is the official language of many international organizations such as The United Nations. Where else is it used as an international language? (slide 5)

P, P: It is used at international sport competitions, music festivals or some other international meetings.

T: To use English as international people have to learn it in many countries , in Russia ,China ,Japan and a lot of others .What is English for them?

P, P: English is a foreign language for them.

T: Where do they learn it?

P, P: At schools, colleges, universities or courses.(slide 6)

T: They also learn it for their future careers, for traveling and for other reasons.

In the ancient world there was the language that was also so popular and was used by many people and for many reasons. That language can be called “lingua franca”. What was that language?

P, P: Latin.

T: Is Latin spoken now?

P, P: No, it isn’t, but it is used in sciences, such as biology and medicine.

T: And how do we call such a language?

P1: a dead language.

T: So Latin is a dead language, but English is a modern one.(slide 7)

T: Now look at these figures that show the number of world population speaking English. (slide 8) Can we say that English is one of the most widespread languages in the world?

P,P: Yes, we can. According to these figures it is really one of the most widespread languages.

T: So we can say that the role of English in the modern world is great. We can call it a mother tongue, an official, an international, a foreign, a modern and a widespread language (slide 9). On your working sheets you have these words and their definitions. I would like you to match them, and then evaluate yourselves.

(учащиеся работают самостоятельно в рабочих листах)(приложение1)

T: So we have proved that English is the world language. But there is one more reason why English can also be called the world or international language.

I would like you to listen to the text and try to understand what the text is about.

Before listening pay attention to these words , phrases and proper names you will hear.(slide 10)

The English Language

The story of the English language started in the fifth century AD when Germanic tribes began to move from their homes in Northern Germany and Jutland in order to settle in what was then still a Celtic country — Britannia. Since then English has just grown and grown, and today it has become an international language in more ways than one.

First of all its huge vocabulary — the largest of any language in the world — includes words from all parts of the globe, reflecting Britain's colonial and 25 sea-faring history. Pyjamas is originally Persian and means something like leg clothes, sofa is Arabic, as are alcohol and admiral. Two of our most popular drinks are foreign words, too. Coffee is from Arabic via Turkish, and tea is ultimately a Chinese word.

Surprisingly enough, two of the biggest contributors to the English vocabulary are French and Scandinavian. A newspaper headline such as: Prime Minister defends Government's actions is pure French, although of course the grammar and pronunciation are both native English. And the following sentences are 100 per cent Scandinavian loanwords: Their windows are dirty. They are taking their bags.

In fact many of the most common words have been borrowed from Norwegian and Danish. Some of these are call, cast, die, want, get, skill, sky, egg, happy, ugly, dirt, take, they, them, their.

What is the reason for this? The explanation is that Danes and Norwegians settled in Northern and Eastern England during the ninth and tenth centuries, and the country was ruled by the Danish King Canute from 1016 until his death in 1035. During this period hundreds of farms, rivers, hills, towns and villages were given Scandinavian names, and English borrowed hundreds of new words, many of which are still in daily use.

Then in 1066 England was invaded by the French-speaking Normans, led by

William the Conqueror. The word Normans tells us that they were descended from vikings who had settled in Northern France. The Normans ruled England for a couple of centuries until — fortunately for English — the French language began to fall into disuse, and English regained its position as the official language of government. But by this time English had also borrowed thousands of French words and expressions. As a matter of fact it is quite difficult to make an English sentence that does not contain a single word of French origin.

PP: The text is about the English vocabulary. and the words borrowed from other languages, such as French ,Spanish, German Chinese, Arabic.

( учащиеся зачитывают названия языков, из которых заимствовались слова в английский)

(slide 11)

T: Listen to the text once again and work in your groups . match the words and the languages from which they came from.( учащиеся вторично прослушивают текст и выполняют задание в группах)

Проверка выполнения (slide12), самооценка на листе самоконтроля.(приложение 1)

T: So we have again proved that English is the world language, but it doesn’t only borrowed words from other languages . As English is spreading all over the world, it also influences the development of other languages and Russian as well .Сan you remember words in Russian that came from English?

Задание на поиск слов ,заимствованных из английского в русский (приложение 2)

T: I think people will have no problem in understanding such words in Russian if they learn English. And why else do people learn English?

PPPPPP…( учащиеся высказывают свои идеи) Now let’s sum up all these reasons .(читаем причины (slide 13)

T: And why do you personally learn English?

PPPPP……(высказывания учащихся о собственных мотивах изучения английского языка)

T: Don’t forget to evaluate yourselves (учащиеся оценивают свои ответы в листе самоконтроля)

T: We are finishing our lesson. Can you sum it up and remember why we call English the World Language, and if whether we have proved it or not. We’ll continue discussing other problems concerning English at our next lessons but for that you are to read the text from our textbook p.152 ex.2 and pay attention to other reasons why English is called the world language .(slide 14). I wish you success in learning English .It is a long and hard work to learn languages and only those who never stops will succeed. So remember the words of the famous English language methodologist Palmer “Learning English has a beginning but no end.”

Thank you, Good bye.
