2. Speech Drills on the Topic:
a. Remember the text we read and tell what problem Athens, Berlin, London, Stockholm and Vienna face nowadays. (Ex. 1, p27, Star, First Certificate, Student's Book)
Now I want you to underline the points of this problem. (The students make a list of problems)
- efficient underground, bus, railway service,
- appropriate facilities for pedestrians, cyclists,
- parking places,
- great number of cars,
- unsuitable roads for cars.
b. In your textbooks you have pictures of the capitals we've mentioned. Have a look and describe them comparing transport facilities. (p. 24-25, Star, First Certificate, Student's Book)
3. Dialogical and Monological Drills:
Can you imagine what city-dwellers feel getting to work every day?
What would you feel being in their shoes?
Look at the task you have on your desk and speak out.
Task 1:
"You live in the suburbs of a big city. It takes you a lot of time to get to work. What problems could you face? Develop the idea"
Task 2:
a. "You live in a big city. Your house is far from your school. It's difficult to catch a bus at rush hour. That's why you are very often late. Today you are late again. Your teacher demands explanations. Have a talk with your class teacher."
b. "Your pupil is constantly late. Ask him why he is often late. Have a talk with your pupil, find out the reasons of being late and give advice."
Task 3:
a. "You have been invited by your friend to the cinema. But you've failed to come on time. You were stuck in traffic and come when the film has already begun. Your friend is very disappointed. Have a talk with your friend and explain the reason of being late."
b. "You have invited your friend to the cinema. You've been waiting for him for a long time. The film has already begun. You're angry. At last your friend has come. Tell him what you feel and wonder why he is late."
4. Listening - Comprehension:
Being late for work is a problem a lot of people face every day nowadays. How do people cope with this problem? Listen to people speaking about the difficulties they have getting to work. Do the task and comment on the information.
Task: You will hear five people talking about how they get to work. Choose from the list A–F the type of transport each person uses to get to work. Use the letters only once. There is one extra letter which you do not need to use.

3. Dialogical and Monological Drills
Task 1:
Imagine that you live in the suburbs of a big city. Tell what transport problems could you face, what type of transport would choose? Why?
Task 2:
a.: You live in a big city far from your school. It takes you a lot of time to get to school; you are often late for classes. Today you are late again. Your class teacher demands explanations, have a talk with your class teacher, explain why you are late. (Your teacher starts the conversation)
b: Your student is constantly late. Today he is late again, have a talk with him, find out why he is late again. Give advice. (You start the conversation)
Task 3:
a.: You were invited by your friend to the cinema. But you failed to come in time because you were stuck in traffic. You have just come, the film began an hour ago. Have a talk with your friend and explain what happened. (Your friend starts the conversation)
b.: You invited your friend to the cinema. You have been waiting for him for along time. The film has already begun. He is late. Now you see him running towards you. Have a talk with your friend, wonder why he is late, what has happened. (You start the conversation)
