The Special Time

Christmas is a special time in the US. From the end of November the whole American nation is dressed in the red, white and green colors of Christmas. All shops, cafes and restaurants, schools and houses, are ‘wearing’ holiday decorations. The Americans run crazy around the shops buying gifts. The main trouble is to remember to buy a gift for each relative.

Some Americans put up the tree right before the holiday, on Christmas Eve. The Christmas tree is different in each house. In a religious family it is crowned by angel or a Biblical star. In all families it is decorated with tinsels, baubles and fairy lights. The front porch of the house is also decorated with colored lights; some have illuminated roofs, windows, and trees in front of the house.

Long before the holidays, all of the kids write long magic Christmas lists of gifts – putting down on paper all the gifts they would like to get from Santa Claus. They believe he will get all they want. Christmas morning is special for kids. Every year they wake up early and run as fast as they can to the tree. They open the gifts and cries of joy and happy smiles lighten up the house. All American families are similar in this special Christmas service at church; some spend every holiday with relatives in another state. But all spend time together, have big meals and exchange gifts.

The cities also share the special Christmas life on holidays. In the cities there are holiday parades and celebrations. People dress in costumes of animals and things, such as, for example, ‘the hamburger’ costume. They go through the streets wearing these light clothes no matter what the weather is like. Kids are out of school for the vacation; so are the parents. There are a lot of Christmas markets in the cities and towns where people sell and buy special hand-made toys and adornments for the house. Also, there are a lot of charities of all kinds: from feeding the homeless, to collecting gifts for poor kids and decorating children’s hospitals. People are kind to each other, as they should be the whole year around.
