Extra information

1. Text “Tatarstan’s unique history”

The first settlements in the territory of the Republic of Tatarstan date back to Palaeolithic period, about 100000 years ago. In the 8th -9th centuries, the tribes of ancient Bulgars, ancestors of the modern Tatars began to populate the Volga region. The first state—the Volga-Kama Bulgaria- was set up at the end of the 9th-beginning of the 10th centuries which was the first feudal state in the north-eastern Europe. In 922, Islam was established as astate religion. The Bulgar mosques and medreses spread knowledge and culture in the neighbouring regions.

In the 13th century, the territory of the Volga-Kama Bulgaria was annexed to the Empire of Chenghiz-Khan and then became a powerful Golden Horde state. The collapse of the Golden Horde in the 30 ies-40ies of the 14th century resulted in formation of a number of new states including the Kazan Khanate. Kazan became the capital of the newly formed state. The Kazan Khanate ceased its existence in October 1552, after two-month siege when troops of Ivan the Terrible, numbering 150000 people, conquered Kazan. In 1917 the Soviet power was established in Kazan.

A path-breaking step on the way to restoration of statehood of the Tatar people was the declaration of the Tatar Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic in 1920.

The end of the 20th century brought new possibilities for development of statehood of Tatarstan. On 30th August 1990, the Declaration of State Sovereignty of the Republic was signed. The new Constitution of the republic of Tatarstan adopted on November 6, 1992 established a new state of the republic.

2. Dialogue “First impressions”

- Welcome, to Tatarstan. Have you ever been to the republic?

- No, this is my first vizit to your land.

- How do you like it? What are your first impressions of Tatarstan?

- I think your republic is unique. The first thing I was impressed with was how people are proud of Tatarstan, of its history, culture and of present-day life.

- Yes, Patriotism is a specific feature of our people. Our country is famous for its long and glorious historical and cultural heritage.

- What else have you noticed?

- I am very impressed by the number of historical places of interest. And above all is the Kazan Kremlin, a magnificent architectural ensemble bearing traces of many centuries. It seems like the people of Tatarstan love history.

- Yes, we do. The magic of history is an amasing thing. We hope to revive the ancient and eternal values of our people. We became aware of our spiritual problems only after we realized that too many historical and cultural masterpieces had been lost. And today new mosques and churches are being built and reconstructed, the names and works of philosophers, historians of the past are being brought to life again.

- I see, and I was surprised to see how the giant Kul Sharif. Mosque is being constructed in the heart of the ancient Kazan Kremlin.

- Yes, it’s our sacred place. The mosque was destroyed after the city was taken in the 16th century. By the way, many people say that Kazan is a city where the Past meets Present, where East meets West. And we sincerely hope that the rich history and poetical images of Kazan will encourage you to visit our city again.

- I’d love to.

-Are you going to any other cities after Kazan?

-Yes, I’ll also travel to Yelabuga and Naberezhny Chelni.

I think you’ll have a very interesting trip. My family and I happy that you’ll be staying with us while you are in Kazan.

Thank you for having me.

4. Gabdulla Tukai.

Tukai, a poet of genius and eternal orphan, was doomed in his short life to experience all the bitterness of homelessness and human misunderstanding. His penetrating poems, written in a living, clear, moving language, convey the orphan state of the Tatar people. He held up to the Tatars a mirror, of their true nature and true destiny. Many of Tukai’s poems have been set to old melodies and have become folk songs. Later on,Tukai’s masterpieces have been used by composers, playwrights to creat popular Tatar ballets, musical dramas. Unfortunately, the life of Tukai is the tragedy of a solitary genius.

Song “My native language”

Oh, my language, native language,
You,re my soul and you’re my heart.
Many things I’ve learnt in this life
Through this language, through my blood.

Little baby in his cradle
Tries to hold his mummy tight.
I remember how my Granny
Told me fairy tales at night.

Oh, my language, native language,
You’re my soul and you’re my heart.
From my childhood till the old age
You’re the treasure of my heart.
Oh, my language. For the first time
In my life I prayed the God.
“Bless my mother. Bless my Father.
Bless me, save me, oh, my lord”
